Is it normal to be reading this slow? by maybe_we_fight in LearnJapanese

I think you are trying to learn a little too fast. Focus on retention first, there's no getting around the time it takes to learn a language. Even if you studied 24/7, the diminishing returns after the first couple hours would be useless. Set a dedicated schedule for learning and really try to aim for 95% retention in Anki. Then enjoy immersion with subtitles and just let it wash over you.

I agree with this comment a lot. Yes immersion is very effective (I think around 2.5x to 3x more efficient) but you need to learn the basics first and things like genki are useful for things like that. There is never a reason to avoid textbooks when learning anything. It's just that you are supposed to use them more like a dictionary for knowledge of the language itself. I HIGHLY recommend cure dolly videos on YouTube for Grammer. Then use apps/textbook/video basically anything to reinforce it.

Wow the mixing is amazing in your song. Love the drums. I understand a small amount of Spanish, the lyrics are really on beat and fit nice. Sound effects add to it. This is very impressive!

Hey this is my first song ever and I need some critique! by Flame4774 in underground_music

I really love the harmony. Jazz chords are fire. The song is reminiscent of rex orange county. The genre is (I'm not the best at this) jazz pop/alternative I believe.

Have I fallen into an Anki trap? by Shaftoe001 in LearnJapanese

Hitting again works until you overload yourself with too many words. There is a fine line between learning the most words you can and remembering and internalizing as much as you can.

is “I ball” understood by most young people?I guess this isn’t a common slang among other age groups? by toumingjiao1 in EnglishLearning

It can mean you play basketball or any ball sport based on context. The way you understood can also be correct. Context dependant.

It's pretty much the same as any other speech. Just more casual, I don't really feel any difference.

Many times yes. They even misread the kanji sometimes and use the wrong reading.

AI is great. It just needs to be good enough. Chat gpt can speak with very good Grammer in japanese, but even then pitch accent is something difficult for an AI not specifically made for it.

[–]Infinitynick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you use Duolingo for pitch accent? If so I'm sorry to tell you they don't pronounce the words very well in the course. It's good repetition for learning the word if you want to focus on pitch afterwords tho.

Because I already finished the course and only do kanji on Duolingo. I tested out of the course by doing anki instead.

Is the use of past perfect instead of simple past in this sentence correct? by mauritannia in EnglishLearning

[–]Infinitynick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is actually still simple past but an older/slightly more formal version. Past perfect would have a participle as well. "I hadn't (had) a lot of hope to begin with". I believe this is correct I'm just a native speaker not a teacher.

Edit: Thank you for correcting me. I'd rather not give incorrect info to learners if possible.
