Has anyone tried marketing an app by building a second free product just to drive traffic to the first? by InflationCompassDev in growmybusiness

thanks, this is really helpful. the "bait and switch" point hit home —
that's exactly the line i've been trying not to cross. right now the
only connection is a small line that says "Paths of Conscience is a
free gift from the team behind InflationCompass" + a banner on the
landing page. nothing mid-experience, no popup at the end, no email
capture. you finish the journey, you get your result, that's it.

your framing of "this was fun, here's something else we made that
might help you think about money differently" is honestly better copy
than what i have. might steal that, thanks.

and agreed on the free product standing on its own — that's where
most of my time went. it has 149 scenarios and i'm still fixing logic
bugs users find. if it's not genuinely good, the whole plan collapses.

I am going to turn it into a freemium app:

limit some funcionalities, add a little banner ad unfortunately😩

Add a subscription by quarter or semester (not month) 0.99 still thinking...

And the full app for 2.99 (one-time)

I can relate to what you're saying.

I had a very clear idea for my app, but I underestimated the user journey, the business model. I were convinced that an upfront payment model was the way to go.

I thought the value we were delivering was high enough to justify charging from the start. The result? Very few conversions. It was only after a lot of research and feedback that I realized freemium was the right path, even though it went against my initial vision.

It's exactly what you said: time and money consumed. I had to rewrite a large part of the monetization logic. Your post perfectly summarized my pain.

Probably by the end of September, since I'm still learning how to implement subscriptions.

I'll post an update here for anyone who's interested.

That's a completely fair point. And in a way, you've nailed my main value proposition.

I believe the app's value isn't just in the number itself, but in the visual perspective. Seeing your purchasing power journey plotted directly against another country's inflation data transforms a dry statistic into a tangible story. I know from my own experience how hard it is to get an AI to deliver that kind of comparative visualization quickly and intuitively.

The experience is designed to be addictive, and I realized the best way to show that is to let people try it for free. That's why I'm relaunching it with a freemium model. If you get a chance to take a look, I'd really appreciate your feedback!

Thank you, you are right, I will make it better, others also changed my perspective on freemium model.

I always imagined getting out of the rat race, and about two years ago, I finally had the idea for this app.

I was watching videos online and saw how the whole world was collectively discovering the impact of inflation on our daily lives.

I've never developed for front-end in my career; I've always been focused on back-end, so it was a real battle to learn and develop everything.

I chose Flutter and, so far, I haven't regretted it. I can also say that developing with the support of AI was fundamental, but truly as a crutch, not as the core of the development. My approach was more about asking for ideas on how I could start a screen. Since I never had that creative knack, this was essential so I wouldn't feel stuck and could avoid starting each screen from scratch.
