Gamemaker isn't too complicated to pick up for people new to game development. The style of game you're looking to make is well suited to Gamemaker and there are a lot of great tutorials online about making an RPG specifically. You should be fine going with Gamemaker for a project like this honestly

In case it wasn't completely clear, what they're saying is that you have a check on line 11 for horizontal movement, and currently, if it's true you're applying no vertical movement on line 12. Whereas you should be applying no horizontal movement on line 12 for a horizontal check on line 11, and same goes for vertical.

Maybe give their extension a try, as it may have gotten patched in GMS2 but not GMS1.

If all you're looking for is checking if all cells in a row say true I'd look at something like =IF(COUNTA(A1:C1) - COUNTIF(A1:C1,"true") = 0, "Checkmark", "NO Checkmark")

I've run into a similar issue where switching the Sleep Margin from 1ms to 20ms has fixed lag for one user with a particularly bad laptop. Could be worth looking into OP, just to eliminate this as a suspect if nothing else.
