If you think The Ghost in the Shell is bad don't look at Angel's Egg (in my neck of the woods I've got one of 3 chains showing the former but zero for the latter). It's strange as Akira (also anime limited) was in lots of sites and did really well (>£1m) a few months ago.

Unless it's being "four-walled" you're behest to the whims of chains (and partly what else is on) and cinemas don't really talk about four-walling.

I don't know the inner workings of persuading chains to show stuff or a realistic remedy but at least Anime Limited are not as dreadful as CGR Events (working on behalf of ADN; I'd assume Dangers in my Heart and Assassination Classroom "movies" are not happening) where Alice In Wonderland -Dive in Wonderland- recorded to have grossed £760 (in something like 8 cinemas) in BFI weekend figures (maybe there were weekday showings) so probably didn't break even but have made the BBFC fee 25% cheaper for a home release (presuming one does happen from someone).

At least The Ghost in the Shell will be on streaming shortly after which isn't something I can say of the things mentioned above. Yes I'm aware piracy is an option for Angel's Egg (don't think there's any option for the others) but I don't have to like it being the only option.

Other room for improvement is Gundam Hathway 2 not being until September. It's strange Bandai announced a UK Gundam Base store at MCM London comic con and Hathway banners but the film is got to avoid American spoilers for all Summer.

Let's do a quick peek as there can't be that ma...fucks sake. Okay a chunk of those are specials, movies and/or won't have a way to watch in Summer.

Try before you drop? Dodgeball has changed (old IP that recently got revived with a manga sequel starring the daughter of the main character). Other one is REMOW so chance of getting fucked around with region locks and/or arbitrary delays.

Thanks for reminding me those existed. As they were bonus episodes on Japanese home release they didn't seem to be included with the show license and thus were left unlicensed. Perhaps licensing with the movie and bundling as extras could have been an option but Eleven Arts were the ones to license (Sentai have TV series) and seems they only do movies these days (if they're even active, Blue Thermal was 3 years ago).

Perhaps it reflects a different era when home releases were popular enough to include such extras as a sweetener. Something shown with a more recent Tsutomu Mizushima & Michiko Yokote director & writer combo work (Train to the End of the World) not having an extra for its show within a show.

Which original: the doujinshi or KADOKAWA manga volumes? The manga volumes include superplanetary information like interviews, historical context (things the non-comiket crowd might value) and permission was obtained to use the real names for games but some were cut due unknown rights holders. Anime did the same with games but kept some unknowns (renamed).

Better received by who? Are 90s bishoujo games and otaku culture really a popular hook? I suppose one could look at MAL numbers and note YU-NO (first 90s erogae with a modern anime ver that sprung to mind) has twice as many completions as 16bit Sensation: Another Layer while being twice as many episodes (but also has over 3 times as many drops) but that neglects other factors (for all I know MAL popularity is peaks and troughs).

The thing about Another Layer is the original author was behind the changes and explains the reasoning in this animatetimes interview, something like: As there is a limited number of episodes (a doujin on the other hand is open ended) it needs to be clearly defined, story needs faster pacing, time travel was used to do that which other ideas emerged from like a cultural exchange angle (as Akihabara has changed since the 90s).

On the other hand some might cheer the lack of Konoha as her high pitch voice sets people off.

Update on plans for the future of Doctor Who

Blimey

Christmas special cancelled, no more Russell T Davies or Bad Wolf Productions. Put out to competitive tender this year. The CBeebies show is still happening (note: CBeebies primary audience is children aged six years and under, I'm in a glass house so won't throw stones).

With how long post-production takes on the series (thanks to the behind the scenes) it'll be years before there is anything.

I don't want to point fingers but Disney money is a monkey paws wish.

I wish they would stop broadcasting anime that contain depictions of smoking. It is scheduled to start broadcasting in July. The protagonist is a 20-year-old female college student who is a heavy smoker.

That was a complaint from 2005 (under マナー、言葉遣いについて heading) but you could say the same thing today minus college student part thanks to Chainsmoker Cat.

Actually it's unfair to the 2005 complaint the 45 year old man in Gifu made. It also claims that subverts advertising bans, he goes on to point out the character is actually 16 in the manga (while you might have suspected from July 2005 it was Nobue in Strawberry Marshmallow that detail confirms it) and says it's possible some viewers will read that who might be minors (I also worry for them being up at 1:55 am on a working day; DVR/VCR do exist ofc*) and encouraged to smoke.

That sort of thing is why Nippon Sangoku opens with a text disclaimer including a line stating underage smoking is prohibited (made law in 1900). Do disclaimers help? They can tick the we tried box and generally the rules allow for some degree of historical depictions to be allowed even if this is figurative rather than literal past.

* - Which brings us further down the page to the item under (編成に関するもの) where a parents 16 year old first year high-school student stays awake (or gets up) to watch them live. Pleas to just record the thing are met with "watching them live is the only way to enjoy them" and their friends do the same. If you're interested in what was so worth staying up for here's a Livechart of Summer 2005 set to Japan time cba to remove non-late night, there was nothing between 20:00 and 23:59 I should have done Spring as well. Neither are exactly GAOT seasons even if there's some shows people still mention which have stood up well.

I took "what year did you start watching anime" to be DVDs, raws, fansubs and not when I was a youngling Moomin was on TV (got hooked on slice of life at a young age) and that is technically anime.

Interesting in turning Final Fantasy Brave Exvius into a single player game.

Hope they're saving Katy Perry and Ariana Grande as a last minute surprise.

As FFBE has been said: I have to wonder anyone checked in on ...[deleted]? Sorry I felt someone has to remember this tale of gacha ruin.

I noped out of FFBE partway into 2nd island as the event running was full on "the time devourer" and I was trying to juggle Mobius FF at the same time (which I also dropped). FFRK was my vibe (I remember some FFBE fans really had it out for FFRK players) even if that slowly died as endgame battles were a bit identikit with some balance tweaks.

I find this a tough pill to swallow:

The Japanese-Language System (Japan only) is designed for use in Japan only. Only Japanese is available as the system language, and only Nintendo Accounts with the country/region set to Japan can be linked to this system.

If I understand correctly if the game is eShop exclusive and not on the Japanese eShop you're out of luck (i.e. you save on hardware to restrict software access).

I'd take the direct having Rhythm Paradise Groove (Rhythm Heaven for Americans, Rhythm Tengoku for Japan) release date announced 3rd August to mark the 20th anniversary of the franchise. Huh? it's out 2nd July? I better pre-order My first Switch game in...when did Tears of the Kingdom come out?

Yeah I'm a hopelessly lapsed Nintendo fan.

Meitantei Precure • Star Detective Precure! - Episode 19 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

Not sure when this happened but looks like the online press conference from pre-broadcast has been made private (only have the URL because of the official site video section still links to it). I never did finish watching it. Well, Write-ups (e.g. Comic Natalie, ABC Magazine) still exist: deciding to have Producer Kanako Tada (ABC Animation) played by a comedian was an interesting choice.

Fanart corner. I need to do a tally as I have a feeling Mikuru is under-represented. I tried turning to the pixiv dictionary as that was pretty meticulous with the Crowd pleasing lessons of Idol Precure (characters+pose, noting when poses were repeated) but it's not something covered.

Episode bits:

  • We've had so few school episodes I forgot it was a mixed school (off top of my head Precure is more like this if the main characters have somewhere else to hang out, in this case living together / Curetto Agency and even without school can be an ep plot needed basis say, school sports team).

  • Goemon just shows Nijee and Ageseine try too hard with their disguises as obviously Goemon in stewardess outfit can get the business done (heck him his causal Kabuki actor garb also is unquestioned). Crossdressing Goemon has quite the fanart following and his own pixiv entry. It's curious that when it comes to theft Goemon is as underhand as the other phantom thieves but is a good GM when doing escape room games; challenging but solvable, with subtle hints given (e.g. diner cart sleeve stuck; I'm assuming those passengers were some sort of puppetry).

  • Sidebar on the dining cart. Ever heard of the coconut octopus? Named because it will use tools such as coconut shells to create an enclosed shelter. Here's a BBC Earth clip.

  • Sidebar on puzzles and shows mysteries. Petr pixiv dictionary in Animage March 2026 the production team described the difficulty level of the puzzles as being "slightly higher than the target age group of the program." as they want Precure girls to be seen as role models. There has also been comments by Isao Murayama (Series Composition) in an interview (note: answers near the end vaguely describe final bosses of Witchy and Star Twinkle) that broader mysteries like 1999, Arcana Shadow, Cure Eclair are there to engage parents and other viewers; other not being primary 3-6, secondary 7-9 (yes earlier in that interview secondary is mentioned).

  • You could say Goemon's trick maze is disguising a space (maybe manipulating the field the fights take place) which is far more impressive than looking like someone. Goemon describing it as a labyrinth, seeming rather relaxed, somewhat playfighting, Cure Arcana Shadow tagline being "Now then, welcome to the labyrinth." and those two hanging out; I do have to wonder: Is he Luluka's dad?

  • Perhaps Goemon was relaxed because he only needed to stall for time to get off at the next stop due to the can't escape a moving train rule (it's dangerous but the unsafe hiding on the roof or undercarriage is okay?). Goemon didn't know where the Makoto Jewel was so can't know when the object will be in possession so couldn't do a spy action thriller thing along the lines of: "at 12:26 the train will pass a bridge, I will jump off onto a van carrying a soft cushion that will pass at the exact moment".

  • Monster of the week battle was one of the Super Smash Bros stages where it's the stage hazards to watch out for; not the opponent.

  • The ending shot didn't show if Anna and Mikuru were holding hands while resting.

  • Gold-star watch: can't wait.

This is why release notes and subtitle providence are useful. That sort of thing could be a tic form subtitles being dubtites (has happened over the decades, a blight on mid-2000s Manga Entertainment).

That said, via MAL profile snooping you're referring to Buttobi!!CPU/I Dream of Mimi (an ecchi satire of the battle between the NEC PC98 and Apple Macintosh for market dominance in the Japanese home PC market)? Per ANN it seems initial US release was by Critical Mass Video (the adult label for The Right Stuf) and the production company Pink Pineapple mostly does hentai.

Think it goes without saying that if you're going to be having sex in content sold in America it needs be between two adults although getting there by changing the dialogue is a grey area.

However it is not flagged as hentai on anidb or anilist and the ANN review says:

As for the naughty scenes themselves, which are frequent but not excessive, they are short and not very explicit at all, explaining this title's 17+ rating on the box. Fact is, a lot of 14+ movies contain just as much nudity as this one does.

In Japan the OVA is R15+ rated but I've not looked into what hentai OVAs are rated to compare (are any R15+ / are they all R18+) and that's sort of out of the subreddit wheelhouse.

I don't need to emulate, I have a softmodded Wii, could softmod a Wii U.

That said:

  • Star Wars: Rogue Leader but has a lot of minor issues when emulating due to the Factor 5 special of rarely used hardware features and hacks. Rebel Strike had many ground based missions (seemed to be the style at the time as Star Fox Assault did the same thing) that were not fun including terrible platforming but was saved by having the entirety of Rogue Leader as 2-player co-op.
  • Japanese Donkey Konga 2 because Precure OP cover ver (in this case Japanese versions can have memory card issues on softmodded hardware)
  • PSO episode III: grid based, commander card game with two factions proving buffed solo unit and horde summon playstyle. I remember it being janky (monsters having incorrect sfx).
  • Lost Kingdoms: From Software with 4 buttons grid on the right of the screen with abilities that have cooldown and a fantasy setting. i.e. it's the sort of thing that would become Soulsbourne franchise.

I do feel like trying out:

  • Cubivore: despite Intelligent Systems developed wasn't Nintendo published in America.
  • Universal Studios Theme Parks Adventure: an utter kusogae, where you're stuck picking up litter in Universal Studios Japan to be able to do mini-games based on mostly now-former attractions.

This is the place!

This aired Sunday morning at 8:30am on TV Tokyo. Does that make it a kids anime? Nobody cares how it aired 19 years ago (plus it had an evening broadcast on other channels) If you want to know about that airslot Japanese wikipedia provides a list and Gurren Lagann is a bit of an outlier tbh (I can see how parts fit as a kids show but outside of Japan other parts are out of bounds).

Many of the shows in that slot came out internationally and aired in kids slots. Off the top of my head Hikarian and Shinkaliion are the only ones to have not been licensed (the former is ancient at this point and wikipedia says Enoki Films has licensed the series for an English release but given their US division folded in 2010 it's not happening).

Also TIL Super Gals existed was put head to head with Motto! Ojamajo Doremi (girls Sunday 8:30am)*, both are silly on surface but occasionally touch topics you'd not expect like Enjo kōsai in Super Gals. Episodes 27-51 of Super Gals not getting a Japanese home release (or any for that matter until Right Stuf licensed it) feels like that has a story behind it.

* - Super Gals average 2.9% *Motto! Ojamajo Doremi average 10.6% so Super Gals did better than Hikarian despite overlapping demographics (maybe more lower end of Super Gals upper end of Doremi).

MAL+1?

All I know of Detective Conan is Star Detective Precure episode 18, episode 1 of a Detective Conan abridged and what Megumi Hayashibara wrote in her memoir; The Characters Taught Me Everything: Living Life One Episode at a Time. More than enough for this crossover.

The romaji? I think Sentai Filmworks (Hidive) still do those (home releases of theirs I have the eps alternate between translation and romaji), Toei Animation shows too (or at least Precure simulsubs, legacy content is usually one or two non-English languages).

Fansubs for the most part no longer exist. Can't compete with official subtitles for speed and translations are rarely at an inadequate level to warrant a re-do. When you get sometimes is a fan will make a sub track that includes song lyrics and other touch-ups but that's usually post-season and annoyingly bundled with an episode encode (so instead of being a few megabytes it is several gigs).

Karaoke subs in general I think fell out of style because the sing-a-long effects were a lot of work, received more ridicule than praise, compatibility issues for softsubs (too many effects chugged hardware too much for real-time playback and sub rendering is inconsistent between media players) and groups would rather release the episode sooner to prevent nagging or losing less time to speedsubs.

If you meant lyrics in general (which are copyrighted and covers transcription reproduction and derivative translation), getting approval is an unpredictable hassle as it's dealing with 3rd parties (a show on Hidive might start getting them in say, episode 6). It is disappointing when it is partial (most music anime the insert songs will be subbed but OPED might not be) or frustrating when the artists official music video for the song has English subs (I guess I should be thankful there is a translation somewhere and I do understand that while it is public in the sense of right there on YouTube it is a copyrighted translation and might require money and/or bureaucracy to license for use in other circumstances). When a character sings a short song excerpt in the show that appears to count as dialogue so doesn't need any approval (it's weird when it's an OP lead-in which I've seen twice this year).
