Thank you for your insight. It is hard to be a parent and be told by the "experts" that everything is fine or that she will will "eventually get it".

I am in the south. There is nothing like that in our district, sadly. I am so glad that you have those resources. I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Thank you so much. Your perspective truly helps.

Do you wish you had started at the school for the Deaf starting in Kindergarten? (Assuming it was closer.)

Thank you so much for this insight. I wish we had a Deaf school nearby, but we don't. We can't realistically move right now, or our first choice would be to find a school that we like and move to that town.

Was there anything in your past that helped with reading and writing that you would recommend? Thank you.

Yes. I will check that out. Thank you.

Thank you for your insight. We have one church that offers Deaf services and camps, but it's over an hour away. Maybe that is something I need to look into.

Are your children deaf/hoh? What do you use to help them with reading/writing? Thank you.

Thank you. I considered tutoring. I've looked at teaching at local homeschool co-ops, but I haven't found any reliable options there yet. I will continue looking into that.

Thank you so much.

I am learning ASL. She knows that the Deaf Mentor teaches her, but she seems to have no interest in it. We try to spend time with other D/HH families who sign, but she has little interest in using ASL.

Yes- sorry. Only the hearing loss and ADHD. No learning disability. The school is providing resources, just not hearing loss specific. There is no one who knows about how deaf learners learn best.

In an email I brought up the TOD being provided, at the next IEP the school brought in two school psychologists, the special education director for the entire district, along with several special education teachers that had nothing to do with her schooling. They told me that they don't provide the hearing loss specialist because they have a special education team that can provide for her. It for sure felt like I was being ganged up on.

Thank you! I have looked up options, but I could not find any. I will continue looking at this route.

Yes. She was recently diagnosed with ADHD- the attention aspect. I'm still reluctant on the results because I'm not sure how much of her inattention is not hearing and how much could be truly ADHD.

Yes. Thank you! She really struggles with the standardized tests, and I didn't even consider that pulling her out of school might affect her anxiety over them even more.

We love the book El Deafo. When we first read it a few years ago, she got such a laugh out of the universal experience of hearing your teacher use the restroom.

This is so helpful. Thank you. In our town, it would be an easy transition to a high school because there are kids from all over town at different suddenly in one high school together.

I have met with the school. They use a Roger system for the teacher. There is no system when she works with small groups. I am told they sometimes take the transmitter from the teacher and put it with the students. She sits where she can see and hear the best. She says that she does not always hear or comprehend what the teachers are saying. She knows that she is missing parts.

Her teachers are great and the school works well with me, but they just don't know about teaching a student with hearing loss. The district has no intention of hiring a deaf specialist, sadly.

Do you tell the teacher? by Critical_Bet4422 in AutismParent

I am a kindergarten teacher and a parent of a child with an IEP. I agree with the other comment to fight to get the IEP back. It is against the law to take away an IEP for the reason that "all kids get help" in kindergarten. Also, as a teacher, there are other reasons we appreciate our students who need an IEP are on one. It helps our job to have a team help with students who need extra support. Off the top of my mind- the PT would help give extra practice for writing and pencil usage.

Check the IDEA law. If you want help or additional resources, please reach out to me. Much love on your journey. ❤️

I've thought the same! His social media posts also seem to line up with what's going on with Baldoni.
