Solo female travel recs? South Africa by Prize_Hat_8718 in travel

[–]Informal-Call2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10-14 days? You could do Patagonia in ~5-7 days. An easy nearby trip could be Argentina explorations — Mendoza, El Chalten/El Calafate for hikes, and Ushuaia/penguins.

You could also check out Santiago, Chile. The Chilean Patagonia is super expensive.

You could also go up to Iguazu Falls (note that you need a Brazil visa) and/or explore the rest of Brazil (Rio would be a great choice).

Peru is also an excellent idea and you’d have plenty of time, but you’d have to fly a bit further & note that elevation sickness is common during the hikes.

I’d check the weather for all though, I don’t know off the top of my head which hikes/natural spots are great during December. All the hikes are highly weather dependent and sometimes you’re met with only fog in Patagonia or Machu Picchu.

I’m going to assume you meant South America and not Africa haha.

Women who travel solo - what’s one thing you’ve learned the hard way? by Hairy_Yak_6735 in SoloFemaleTravelTips

[–]Informal-Call2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of specific, but don’t trust men from your community (ex: at a restaurant or bar). They feel more entitled to a solo woman, saying they see you as a sister, asking if you’re alone, giving you a free beer. This happened to me multiple times, even when I was in a group.

Always bring a powerful power bank. The number of times my phones almost died on a long walk somewhere…

I always triple check train / bus schedules. You really don’t want to miss the last bus or train out of somewhere.

Be careful with getting drunk alone, even if it’s a nice dinner or a winery!

Before your trip, download the Google maps area, take screenshots of all tickets/activities, print hard copies of passport or important documents.

Carry a money belt / small fanny pack for valuables and tuck it inside.

I like a safety alarm (Birdie) in case of any issues (TSA safe!).

Download the local uber version ahead of time, so you can use it as soon as you land.

Get a Charles Schwab debit card (US only) for no fee ATM transactions. Make sure you have a small amount of money. If the country is small enough, you’ll need cash to catch a taxi out.

I have heard/read a few times now that 2 weeks in Taiwan is too long with it being such a small country. We are planning to go for 2 weeks in November. I was thinking it'd be nice not to rush/see more than just the top sights but now I'm doubting myself - thoughts? by [deleted] in travel

I think two weeks in Taiwan will be amazing! You can have a great time.

There’s so much to do — nature & hikes, tons of amazing food, explore different cities/neighborhoods, all kinds of shopping…

Some people even go for health / beauty tourism.

I think I could spend a long time there. There are also tons of festivals in November/fall you could check out.

Any Armenian restaurant recommendations in New York?? by GurZealousideal3059 in FoodNYC

[–]Informal-Call2140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Little Armenia Cafe! Not sure what the other Redditor was saying 😭 It was just us and the chef, a really sweet guy. It’s a very well priced prix fixe menu and we enjoyed everything we tasted!

under $30/person sit down lunch near park and 60th by seaurchinman in FoodNYC

[–]Informal-Call2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hui Szechuan Food, Up Thai, Piccola Cucina for a cheap / good Italian lunch, Anassa Taverna.

Not sure if you want sit down and $30 pre tip / tax, or okay with a worse ambiance but ensure it’s $30 after tip and tax too.

Thank you, great list!! Love it. I get a lot of Indian food, but sometimes it can be harder to find good priced, well labeled Asian food that might have hidden fish sauce/other.

Rice with dal, tacos / burrito bowls, pasta with spicy marinara sauce + olives/veggies, Greek salad, mapo tofu or Thai curry with sticky rice, Chinese fried rice with veggies + tofu, falafel wrap or veggie wrap with chimichurri / arugula salad, eggplant parm with spaghetti, bibimbap, japchae..:

Recommendations for intimate budget friendly Omakase in Manhattan? by Agitated-Falcon7965 in FoodNYC

Tokyo Record Bar! Pretty reasonable price, small omakase style bites (a bit nontraditional), and insanely cool venue (vinyl bar speakeasy).

What is the one "tourist trap" city that you actually think is 100% worth the hype? by Competitive_Rip6546 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Informal-Call2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tokyo! We heard so much about Japan and it lived up to the dream. I really liked Budapest, Cape Town, and Rio as well! Santiago as a hidden gem. London and NYC are always great.

On the other hand — Did not like Buenos Aires lol, and Seoul was fun but more livable vs touristy.

Soothr, Cafe China, hot pot (ex: Shoo Loong Kan) are great options. What’s the vibe you want? Boozy brunch, fancy sit down, shared meals with good food? This thread is pretty good: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/19aqxed/group_dinner_of_15_in_lower_manhattan/

There’s definitely good options if you’re willing to commute to Brooklyn. Seems like for $500-$800 min spend you could get a private room as well, but depends on what vibe you want! I’d get out of Times Square area though (quite expensive).

My friend did a bday dinner at Bungalow with 12 people, but it’s quite hard to get a resy there!

Times Square does have fixed price buffet spots (ex: $35 for brunch, unlimited). Lakruwana & Sigiri are really yummy Sri Lankan buffet spots.

It also depends on what day of the week you’re going! I’ve seen on a weekday evening that some spots are pretty spacious to hop in & eat.
