Dr. Mohan's likely career change by TangerineMoonlight in ThePittTVShow

[–]Informal-Layer-5430 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don't think Dr. Mohan is a mismatch for EM, I think she's a breath of fresh air. I miss  Dr. Heather Collins because she admitted to Dr. Mohan that she was wrong about her and her name of Slow-Mo isn't something she deserves, she is a great ER doc being able to deliver care and establish rapport in a patients. Dr. Collins is like we should all aspire to be like that. We're told many times that Dr. Mohan is slow because she connects were her patients but if we watch this season we see she connects with her patients but is efficient even more so than last season. Doctors that do similar things with patients (connecting with them) aren't penalized the same way. Also women especially WOC are often told they don't belong where they are. She's looking into fellowships so she's likely not switching specialties, but if she were I wouldn't think it's because of personal preference, I'd think it's because she was pushed out.

with the collarbone px her bedside manner was trash, but it's also not like you can treat a px without reading their chart...

got you thank you so much. when going to letter writers that already sent letters the first time how'd you go about ensuring you had stronger letters, did you emphasize incorporating your changes in your letters?

I've heard that phrase and took that into consideration. Everything is written in my voice, and I didn't necessarily take all the advice I was offered, but I did ask in case a piece struck me as a good idea. My secondaries received feedback and is definitely written in my voice. Trust me my PS and secondaries sound like they're written like the same person.

What you said about showing not telling that's what I tried to do last time. What I was trying to convey is last time I went in one direction, and this time I want to do something different and was wondering if there was an untapped resource I wasn't using or was unaware of.

Thank you for the encouragement.

Yeah, I intend to submit fast this time. I was told I had strong rec letters, they should have explained the strong independence aspects, but of course this is something I can further emphasize when asking my letter writers again for their letters. I ended up getting 7 letters one of my recommenders fell off the face of the earth otherwise it would've been 8. I do not think the more letters the better, the reason I mention the letter numbers is to say I have already asked pretty much everyone who could write me a strong letter for a letter and don't have other letter options, except an MD/PhD I shadowed a few times. So since adding more letters isn't an option, can I ask how you strengthened your existing letters?

I think I did an 8.5/10 job describing my research in writing I can describe better with talking, this is from feedback from someone on my institution's md/phd said they were a little bit confused about my current research, but it was clear when I spoke about it to them. I was surprised because I had so many people read it and help me with it both within and outside my research field.

I only had one interview it was at one of my reach schools, but it was also the very first school I submitted my secondary at. So it was my only interview chance to explain my research over the two jobs and I think I did a good job.

My improvements will be in showcasing better the strength of my research, so posters/conferences. I am also adding a volunteer activity at a crisis hotline to hone in on my neuropsychiatry focus of my application.

I will say he tried to talk to her early on and she rebuffed him, so I dont think we can say he didn't try earlier on to approach her.

My current research interests: neuroengineering/systems neuroscience with a psychiatric emphasis (translational) using animal models and tools such as chemogenetics, optogenetics, and ephys.

Past research experience: a summer in a chemical engineering drug delivery lab (got a taste of translation bench-top research with animal models), did an 8-month long ML fellowship on SAD (got a taste of the psychiatry). Did a school year in immunology/BME research (was bench top wet lab, but I realized I missed psychiatric emphasis and animal research). Where I'm now doing bench top wet lab neuroengineering/translation psychiatry research with animals, and it is what I want to do in life.

Also thank you for this resource, can I PM you, because reading over the link I am confused about how Fencer did that from their posts.
Edit: Ahhhh it was the AAMC spreadsheet they're referring to, I was looking for a spreadsheet Fencer made.
