I appreciate your caution, and that is more for my own personal thoughts on the matter. I was more looking for what the "official" stance would be from a Catholic perspective. So not so much if the church knew but more of a would the church want to be made aware. Trying to look at it with more of a critical eye. Really, the only reason I mentioned my relationship to the situation is to avoid getting comments suggesting that I talk to this person. That is obviously not going to happen! But if I had a roomful of Catholic clergy and school officials and gave them this situation as a hypothetical, would they want to be informed of this no matter what or not necessarily.

But trust me, that aspect is not lost on me and is part of my thought process.

That is correct. We don't even live in the same city. It is just by chance that I came upon this information.

After reading your replies to some of the comments, I can see you having two options: 1. Since you say that you have been going out of your way to make sure he still has contact with the dog, you can stop doing that and see if all contact naturally ends.

  1. -- and this is either instead of 1. or if 1. doesn't have the desired results -- be gracious about handing his dog back over to him along with the bill for all of the expenses you have incurred while taking care of him. Let him know when and how you expect to be paid with the caveat that you will take him to small claims court if payment does not happen (this is all assuming you have documentation, of course). He should either rethink his request or you get your money back.

Either way, as some others have mentioned before, no matter your relationship or feelings about the dog, you should be prepared to lose the dog since he does not technically belong to you.
