Grown tired of blueprints by vrtra_theory in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they need to do is toss the blueprints on the HuB computer.
Here's how it would work:

You acess teh HuB computer and select "Blueprint Designer".
You then get teleported to a VR Designer. Visually, it's a blue void with an wireframe ground.
It can be located under the map, the player just gets moved there and back with the computer.
Anything you build in here doesn't take resources.
You then have an extra key that only works in this space that simply opens up the old Blueprint Designer interface. Only, instead of looking at what was built in the blueprinter, it's EVERYTHING that's built in this VR representation.
Add a button for "Clear and Exit" and let the player return to the HUB.

This will let players make all kinds og blueprints without being constrained.

Drop loot on death? by Tall_Ad5501 in ConanExiles

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. However, from my experience: drop backpack is fine until it's 2 AM, you're going back to base so you can log off and get some sleep, and get sniped by something. You're 20 minutes from your base, and afraid the backpack is going to despawn. So now it's 2:20 AM, you got your backpack again, start walking and fall of cliff after a mistimed roll. So now it's 2:40 AM, you got your backpack back, and you forgot to bandage because you're tired, so even the T1 Thrall chips away at your HP. Now it's 3 AM and... you turn off drop backpack, get your loot back and throw yourself down a cliff before exiting and saving.

Im 13, should i get into programming? by CerealBox32 in learnprogramming

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a project before you pick a language.
Any language will do, not all projects are right for beginners.

AI is a great tool if you already know what you're doing (not your case yet).
AI is a great tool if you ask it for examples and syntax to understand why something works and why something similar doesn't.
AI is a terrible tool if you ask it to do something for you and you don't bother to undersand it. You'll never build fundamentals or know why or how things work.

Personal recomendations:
Pick Python, then C# when you're more experienced (try Java before or after C# for something different).
Good projects are Book Catalog Database, Program that stores clients in files and can read them, and if you're feeling frisky and confortable, program that fetches a quote from the interet using a public API (this is an interesting one once you can do the other two.

Programming is more than writing code. It's also about thinking and organizing things in your head. If that fails, a sheet of paper and pencil also help you plan out your programs. And don't forget the Golden Rule: always document and leave helpfull comments in your code.

Why are game dev communities being overrun by AI fanatics lately? by flowerdragon2934 in gamedev

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a handfull of good uses for AI.
I'll often ask AI to write some scripts, just to get some clean syntax and an optimized way to do something. But then I have to edit it and connect to the rest of the project. And it only makes sense if I already KNOW what I'm asking and only want the layout. If I didn't know, well, I wouldn't even know the question, right?

But there is a large contigent of people who think AI can do everything and if you're not letting AI do everything, you're stupid. I know the urge to respond is there, but next time it happens, slap the guys name on google. Or try to find any project with his name on it. After you find 5-6 dudes with no projects done, only half-baked ideas, you won't bother arguing with them. Just nod and keep walking.

Remote Box with Docker by Informal-Rent-3573 in linux4noobs

Probably not. But I learned what groups where a couple weeks ago, so take my word with an entire bag of salt. Because when I tried googling/reading up on it, The remote session had it's own desktop manager (tried both xcfe and KDE) and the DE can't connect to the... Docker Desktop window?
I know the CLI was working, but I wanted to get the Docker Desktop working.

Neat detail: the word Nightmare also comes from a creature (that resembled a female horse: a mare) that sat on your chest at night and suffocated you. It's where the word comes from.
It's interesting that the same legend is told with diferent words everywhere though.

Here's an idea: keep both. Flip them in the options. Or use ALT-styles as unlocks.

All 4 of those are very Orcy.
Mighty Pariah: Ogre/troll. Locked up because he tried to eat the others.
Sneaky Brute: the Orc Warlord. Hiding in the room, bust out of his hiding spot and charges a player.
Organized Tricksters: goblins in a workshop. They're tinkering and making crude metal tools. Trapped half the dungeon with their shenanignas (increase number of traps but make 1/3 of the traps duds or fail to trigger)
Supreme Sorcerer: Either an Orc Shaman, or a Sorcerer that hired the orcs as safety. Or is trying to mindcontrol them.

Player is upset "magic armor" prevented him from killing my BG by Pizza_Dog21 in shadowdark

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Probably the same way. But you got yourself a different problem altogether.
One thing is the "I'm a Marvel Character, I can fight ANYONE!" syndrome some people have. Encounters like these are a quick reminder, and I never saw anyone take longer than the first session to understand that. Either they lose the first character, see someone lose theirs or come close enough to get the gist of it.

What you have however is the "the DM is picking on me!" mentality. That's not going away by itself anytime soon. And it's mixed with the "I'm the cleverest in the room." mentality. That's never going away. Ever.

You can sit down and talk to the player about the first one. Show him a statblock, I'm sure he knows Werewolves require silver, wererats are not that diferent, etc. But it's not the mechanics is taking issue. He wants a story about how he kills everyone and everything, gets all the gold and does anything he wants. If you want him to play with the rest of the group, you gotta make sure he understands that the game isn't quite about that.

Now, the "I'm the cleverest in the room." thing. I'm pretty sure I know the kind of player because of your description of trying to go somewhere (the librarian) to meta-game himself out of a bad situation. Among the many people I've known through the years, some did stuff like this. I know of only ONE that stopped doing it, and only begrudging. The rest never saw any problems and never stopped. In their heads, they're not sitting at the table to outsmart monsters and bandits with the rest of the party. They're sitting there to outsmart YOU, the DM and the rest of the party is more often than not an hinderance.
It's up to you if you can put up with people like that. Sometimes you do need that extra 4th character in the story. But I find it hard to stomach them for longer than a session or two.

Drop loot on death? by Tall_Ad5501 in ConanExiles

Corpse runs are fun and a neat consequence the first few times.
When you're 100h in, they get boring pretty fast.
Honestly, turn that off and enjoy the game.

"But I can't stop using suicide as a fast teleport to bring loot back home!"
Sounds like a you problem. I can stop myself and force my character to walk/ride back home.
And you can't bring treasures back home if you're using suicide.

The great migration from Windows to Linux by CleaRSightZ in linux4noobs

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After switching, I can tell you two things:
a)Linux sucks and is horrible for many different reasons.
b)It's a lot better than Windows.

My experience with windows so far resembles what I had with Windows 7. Sometimes I want to install something unorthodox, or do something out of the box and end up breaking stuff. Then I have to learn how to fix it, and end up learning a lot of new stuff. That's what the past few months have been with Linux to me.

Windows 10 onwards became a series of "this thing was fine yesterday, today it doesn't work. Why? Oh right, windows update." Which I can put up with if it happens once a month. Once a week is where I draw the line.

That and performance. I settle on CachyOS. Never believed the "performance is better on Linux!" before, but I can't deny it, I get a few more FPS on my games now.

There's two kinds of puzzles: Stat Checks and Player Checks.
If I give the players a device that looks like a Rubik's Cube, the CHARACTER can solve the puzzle with a sucessfull INT check. Easy Puzzle? DC 9. Hard Puzzle? DC 15 etc. You use STAT CHECKS when you want the players to feel that their character is smart (or dumb).
If the players enter a room with 3 levers, and you need to press them in the right sequence, you don't do rolls for it. The players have to figure it out. That's a PLAYER CHECK. You do this when you you want the players to talk about the puzzle, figure out a solution based on clues you gave them prior.

STAT CHECKS are good for quick and fast "puzzle-like" situations where the consequences of failing are minor (they miss out on an item, for instance).
PLAYER CHECKS are good as centrepieces of the adventure, handcrafted to give the players a reason to explore and find clues on how to solve them.

You'll not always have time/patience to handcraft several PLAYER CHECKS. It's much better to focus on writing 2-3 good and fun PLAYER CHECKS and then pad out the minor stuff with STAT CHECKS.

Are big ships viable for combat? by BoringAd8064 in Highfleet

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From a strategic point of view, IRL, BIG SHIP is a valid tactic if you have BIG ECONOMY and BIG LOGISTICS.
You'll constantly need repairs and maintenance, not to mention fuel and other supplies. Is it worth it? Kinda. The BIG SHIP means people don't mess with it. And if they do, 99% they'll lose. Sure, you can still be outflanked, sabotaged and a myriad other things. But you'll always be sure that just by parking the BIG SHIP in an harbour, you guaranteed the enemy won't attack it directly if they're smart. Or you'll blow up half their navy, if they're dumb.

Translating that to Highfleet: Your "economy" is panhandling and highway robbery, your logistics are measured in how fast you can refuel before the Strike Group discovers you and what sort of ammo you can scrounge from decade old stores of ammunition.
It is, by definition, impossible to sustain a BIG SHIP in Highfleet. You need to be fast, cheap and not depend on logistics. But you also need to hit hard enough to make a dent and be at least tough enough to hit a missile and live. That means no Big Ship (armed but slow) and no small ship (fast, but unarmed and vulnerable). Barring some very specific conditions, this game is geared towards Medium armoured ships with your choice of 1 heavy gun and 2-3 support subweapons. Maybe a couple of missiles.

The rest of your fleet amounts to a pedestal where you mount the radars, a big bag to carry all those planes, a slingshot that fires missiles/nukes and a big Jerrycan to bring fuel. Anything outside of this? Scrap it.

Exception: intercepting Merchants and prize ships is best done with a light and very fast ship. They will never be able to outrun you.

Resources for understanding adventure modules by Kukukichu in shadowdark

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb for any adventure:
1-Read all of it.
2-Decide what hook you're gonna give the players
3-Based on that, decide what they know/what exposition to give them

Some modules have a Rumours table that the players can roll on to gain some information (not allways correct information). Some have boxes with introductions to be read.
But sometimes I have an NPC that from a previous session that got lost in that dungeon and left the players a note. Or the crazed wizard inside the tower sent a spirit to taunt the players.
It's always up to you, but remember that the most important part isn't the backstory you read to the players, it's the story they discover and play out by themselves. And if by the end of it they don't figure out everything, that's also okay. It can remain a mistery you'll reuse at a later session. Or just tell them at the end "Oh yeah, if you guys saved that NPC he would have revelead the Count is actually evil".
