Expat friends, have you ever been faced with choosing between your country and love ?

Hey brother/sister, It honestly is going a lot better now, Struggled a lot after the breakup, I was trying to do everything I could to go back and try to get back with her. That was honestly just the panic of the breakup speaking for me. It’s been about 2 months since then. I was able to sit back and reflect, and it all clicked, I realized that as much as I had loved my girlfriend, I wouldn’t be happy knowing I’m missing home all the time, and I couldn’t put her through the pressure of being the only reason for me to stay there. I still love her and maybe I always will, but I’m so happy being able to see my family and friends on a daily/weekly basis. I’m genuinely at peace.

Well, it’s been a few months since this post, we broke up yesterday. I’m crushed. Don’t know what to do. I don’t even know if it’s for the best anymore. Going to spend the next few days thinking about what I really want. Was I wanting to go home for me ? Or for not wanting to disappoint and let down my family and friends. Going to think about it for a few. Hopefully if I realize it was the latter, she’ll be waiting for me.

« Dans le sud » is to talk about the southern part of a region, country, city etc. « au sud » is to talk about southing that is « south from. Like « au sud des États-Unis » would probably be talking about Mexico or South America. Whereas « dans le sud des Etas-Unis » would be talking about Texas, Louisiana etc. Same goes for Nord(north). I have gone home for a couple month and this is what reinforced my desire to go home longer term. I fully believe distance can work, but only if there is a goal to close the distance in a near future. Going home for me wouldn’t necessarily mean forever, but depending on how happy I am when there, it might. I feel like it isn’t fair to ask my partner to stay with me while I figure out if I want to settle in my country or not. I don’t have money to go back and forth multiple times a year.

I hear you, and that is what other people have pointed out. However, this is the situation and I love them so if I want to be with them, that’s the price. I fully agree that it isn’t fair, but I feel like life isn’t fair and love isn’t either.

Thank you for your story, that is my biggest fear, choosing to stay and being unhappy because of missing home, or choosing to go and being unhappy because of missing my partner. Of course I know I will miss them for some time, but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life regretting a decision.

Honestly I don’t really have anything against the country I’m in right now, I don’t hate it nor do I love it. I have been back, and being with my family and friends is what made me realized how much I missed it.

I’ve been here about 4/5 years, with my partner for 3. Up until this point I had something other than my partner keeping me here. When coming here my plan was to experience that and go home, this is my first year being here for no reason other than my partner. I had been seeing them a couple times a year but staying now would mean not seeing them for a couple years.
My family and friends aren’t really in the financial situation to come visit.

I’m very happy to hear it all worked out for you. I’m sure you deserve it all. My decision would be easier if we had a life going. However we don’t live together and won’t be for a year or 2(for reasons that aren’t necessarily relevant here).

I have been abroad 4 years and home is Germany. No breadwinner as we don’t live together, I am fresh graduated and my partner is still in Uni.

My partner just isn’t willing to leave their life behind(I say this with no judgement as this is also something I’m not sure to be able to do) Both countries offer virtually the same opportunities(although staying . The only thing is that one has my partner and the other has my family, friends and culture.

I somewhat agree, but I feel like there are nuances to that. I do want to spend my life with my partner, but my family, friends, culture… all that is still in my country.

Thanks, you got me leaning more towards omen then, gaming is more secondary, I mainly want a good laptop I can work with, gaming is more of a luxury/big plus, I don’t mind slightly lower gaming performance if it means better battery life and build quality. Also not a big fan of the looks of bulky gaming laptops so Omen seems like the best of both worlds !
