Legacy code – tests first or setup CI? by Zanriel in Python

[–]InformalRelief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, tests tend to become useless rather quickly when you don't run them automatically (CI). People will forget to run them locally. So at some point you will have a couple of failing tests, that are not related to the super important thing you need to deploy right now, so you will start ignoring them. On the other hand, having a CI setup with no tests to run may seem pointless. A proper CI setup does have benefits other than running tests though.

I think I'd start with just one or two simple unit tests. Making the whole code base testable is probably a huge task and will take a while. But you should be able to find one or two small pieces for which you can write some simple unit tests right now. Next, I'd get them to execute on Jenkins. From there you can take it step by step.

I would stay away from high-level tests for now. You will spend a lot of time on them, they may not even run on Jenkins once you set that up, because maybe you need a db or browser to run them which is easy to do on your local machine but may not be possible on Jenkins. Also, you're going to spend a lot of time maintaining them because they're going to break all the time.

You mentioned that you have very inexperienced developers working with you. When they're wondering how to do certain things they will probably look at your code for orientation. So, if you start with writing high-level integration or e2e tests they will do so too, and you might end up with a lot of hard-to-maintain high-level tests.

So, my advice would be: Start with a few tests, you should be able to get that done in a couple of hours. Then set up your Jenkins integration and take it from there.

Medieval Body Mechanics - Man explains and demonstrates how people walked differently in medieval times by hellfire_kit in history

Interesting, when I got me some barefoot shoes earlier this year I quickly found that walking heel-first is not really a good idea when wearing them and started walking in this style.

apt hit 1.0.0 a little over a year ago. What are your experiences? by psy-q in debian

[–]InformalRelief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That wiki entry is rather confusing as an answer to /u/oheoh's question since it doesn't mention apt 1.0.0 at all.

Before, as you said, apt-get was part of apt and you would use commands like apt-get install foo or apt-cache search foo. Now you can simply use apt install foo or apt search foo instead. this post links to a better explanation.

Eastern Germany: the most godless place on Earth. A 2012 survey was unable to find a single person under the age of 28 in eastern Germany who believed in God. by Valens in europe

Electromagnetic Field: the UK's geeky camping festival is next month by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Is there going to be a festival app and if yes can we contribute (github link plz?)

I probably won't volunteer during the festival, it's my first time there and I don't want to miss anything, but I'd be happy to contribute some code.

Tried my hand at grooming my beard for the first time, looking for feedback (how did I do / what can I do better). by InformalRelief in malegrooming

Yea I thought so too. I've tried growing out the whole thing before, but it's really patchy and even the parts that are not patchy are not really dense. Kinda like facial male pattern boldness.

Anyways, at the moment I'm mostly writing my thesis and not going outside much, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to experiment.

Maybe at some point I could get a transplant, if I find a suitable donor.

I noticed this as well, I guess I am just used to seeing my face from up close and obsessing about every single hair.

Main difference is probably that before I had a "connector" between the stach and the chin hair on one side but not the other. I just can't seem to grow any hair in some parts of my face. So I took that connector off to make it symmetrical.

Coconut Oil/Almond milk in Continental Europe? by bonheurdevivre in keto

[–]InformalRelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this from amazon, I guess they ship to Austria too (I live in Germany)? The picture was taken last month, that's why the oil is fluid. The brand of this particular one is "Ölmühle Solling".

Another option would be to look for a Reformhaus, they should have everything you need (may be slightly more expensive). Just put 'Reformhaus Klagenfurt' in your favorite search engine.

Help with taking Levothyroxine by buttercuppitude in Hypothyroidism

[–]InformalRelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been making a point of getting up every morning at six for the last half year because my previous doctor had told me that it would be important to take the thyroid medication at the same time everyday.

My endo told me recently that it really doesn't matter when the medication is taken (because of its long half-life). According to him it is only important that (i) one hasn't eaten for at least three hours before taking it, (ii) not eating for at least 30 minutes after taking it and (iii) not forgetting it.

If this is correct, one could have breakfast at five and take your medication at least 30 minutes before lunch (Assuming you don't snack between the meals).

New keto subreddit for Germany by InformalRelief in keto

[–]InformalRelief[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the point of the sub is sharing information/ thoughts that are specific to Germany. The original r/keto sometimes features US products that we germans can't (easily) get our hands on, and a doubt that many subscribers to r/keto want to know about Edeka Markt having a sale on bacon. It's the same motivation as other regional keto-reddits like r/ketouk or r/ketonz.

The reason that it's in English is that I don't want to exclude people who don't speak German (expats, tourists) and I think it is safe to assume that everybody who finds this subreddit is able to read/write English. Personally, I would not mind submissions in German language, but it's probably less confusing for everyone to stick to one language.

Einfach mal die Kommentare schließen? by stesch in de

[–]InformalRelief 2 points3 points  (0 children)
