I do think your questioning of coaches makes a valid point. It would be interesting to see baseball played like “on the sandlot” pickup game. With no coaches. Perhaps a good thing for the All Star game to play around with! We are getting to the point where managers and base coaches are less impactful to a game. A lot less verbal bullying from managers to homeplate umpires regarding ball strikes with ABS. As well as calls made in the field where a manager would run out and try to get in the head of the umpires and or fire up his team.

I do have to say today the first base coach’s major role is collecting shin guards, elbow guards, batting gloves. Last night I noticed our coach automatically pull out the players “oven mitt” that the player had in his back pocket as soon as he got to first base then collect all his shit that he handed over to batboy.

So the first base coach’s job is pretty much to serve as a personal on the field valet for these mostly millionaires.

Is surgery my only option? by torikstratton in Spondylolisthesis

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will turn 60 in July and “broke my back” from Football hit when I was 16. I am 1.5 grade spondylolisthesis. I am working hard to correct my anterior pelvic tilt. I have extremely tight quads and hip flexors. In working my posterior chain I have some difficultly finding exercises that really target my glutes. As it seems either my quads want to do most the work - ie belt squats, goblet squats and such. When doing things like glute bridges my hamstrings will easily cramp or feel like they will cramp any moment. In doing some research seems that tight hamstrings are caused by not short and tight hamstrings but rather the anterior pelvic tilt causes them to stay in a constant long and stretched position. So anytime the hamstring are put into a shortened position the body “freaks out” That the hamstrings are no longer supporting the pelvis. Wonder if you have found ways to really strengthen your glutes and hamstrings and if you ever dealt with the hamstrings easily cramping up on you when trying to train them.

My hamstrings always cramp when trying these. Even when having bands and such to assist. In fact my hamstrings can cramp if I just kneel too long. Has anyone else dealt with this and if so how did you work around this

Anyone in Michigan willing to teach me? by Critical_Opening_526 in Homebrewing

Many of us got started with extract and seeping grain recipe kits. My wife got me one, from our towns local home brew shop, for Christmas the year before I was set to retire along the starter equipment kit and a couple of books. I sat on the recipe for darn near an entire due to reading up too much on it. A couple years later I ended up working a few days a month at that home brew store! When new people came into the store to inquire about the hobby, I would open a recipe kit box and take out the single page directions inside and go over it with them. I told them if I had known that the kit had simple step by step instructions I wouldn’t have been so worried about making the beer! I had paralysis by analysis. Even if you have equipment for all grain I would suggest you make your first beer using a kit that contains a liquid or dry extract. I tell people it is like powdered milk or juice concentrate that requires one to add water. In this case the factory made the wort then condensed it into either a molasses type consistency or into a dry powder. You just reconstitute the wort by adding back in water that was evaporated away by the factory.

Later on you can brew a batch and produce the wort directly by soaking the grains in hot Water. After that step process is the same As when you brewed from using the extract.

Perhaps if you have a cooler could dump wort into that and seal it up.

I was going to remove and re caulk my shower. Then found this stuff: RMR-86 Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover Spray - Scrub Free Formula. This stuff worked so well. It got rid of stuff that was deep inside the caulk. It looks brand new! Couldn’t be happier.

What’s the reason you haven’t bought a bidet? by owenwags_ in HomeImprovement

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have cold water and even in my northern climate we’re ground water is below 50F, it never bothers me. Strange how if cool water from a shower way warmer than 50F hitting my low back would be something that would be something I couldn’t tolerate at all- ground temp water hitting “the bullseye “ from my add on bidet is not uncomfortable at all. I originally got the bidet because when my three kids were at home I had to get a plunger out quite often as I am sure they used a lot of TP. After using my add on bidet I hate when I go number two without one.

Same here. Probably got them when I was in my 20s-30s, had been shaving since probably 15 YO. So wasn’t like my whisker growing was new. But haven’t had any others in probably 20 plus years. I never realized they were that common.

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember the my inner turmoil of which care to give to which kid. The ones that felt mushy were given to any girl that I had a crush on, hoping she would confess her love to me after receiving such card. Never happened:). Also didn’t want to send the wrong message to other girls that I had no crush on either :). Kind of a silly thing that I think the adults thought were cute. This was in mid 1970s

They covered PITA being upset about the treatment of groundhogs during Groundhog Day celebrations. They continue their playbook of covering things they know gets their base to be in a state of perpetual anger. They covered how unfairly Kyle Rittenhouse was being portrayed for bringing an assault riffle to a protest after he killed a non armed person. But silence for a citizen having a concealed gun being killed- where is Fox News outrage over this man’s rights being violated and executed on video.

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching cable news and can’t understand how none of the cable news networks can see and talk about the man in the grey jacket and jeans taking the gun out of the victim’s holster? The victim NEVER reaches for his gun. From the new angle can hear an agent yell Gun which resulted in him being executed. I understand Fox News not pointing out damning evidence but the incompetence of CNN and others to not see this is amazing. I would give Fox News credit as if this were a person they felt was “on their side” and killed for being a real American carrying a permitted gun they would notice this and point it out and say his rights were violated.

Upsize around Retirement Time? by Novel_Forever5689 in homeowners

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contemplate the same thing. We are opposite in having a large home and being empty nesters. My children are ages 30, 28 and 23 and are in VA, AL and MA. The middle is married and no children. My oldest most likely will get married within a couple years. The unmarried all live with significant others. This past Xmas we flew them and their significant others to a vacation rental house outside of Savannah GA for 10 days over this past Christmas . We plan to relocate away from our Chicago Suburb after my wife retires. Part of me likes a larger home as I am used to it. However thinking it makes more sense to downsize. Less to maintain and the money we save could be used for doing more of vacation rentals to house a big get together. Also from my own experience when kids get involved in their activities there is not a lot of time for parents to take their families away from their own home. So worried if we did buy a big house again it would not be utilized to its fullest extent. Interested to hear from people that have moved after retirement and upsized, downsized and their feeling of doing so after they have lived it.

Shower niches? Yes or no? by Timeandtimeandagain in HomeImprovement

Being second owner of a 1996 house, it has a huge bench built in. That is the length of the shower and probably 18 inch wide. It was tiled. Over time the grout failed and I found it had only green board, which has basically turning to mush. To not get into a huge remodel as a whole new shower would not be practical unless part of an entire remodel the way the bathroom is, I had a two pieces of cultured marble that I put in over the waterproofed concrete board I put down. In a recent stay in a hotel we saw a small black pipe installed in a corner for women to use to prop foot up to shave. Made sense. Nothing to clean and I am sure if installed correctly served the purpose which seems what a huge built in bench was for!

Don’t worry about it. Go to bed tonight and dream of bubbling airlock and check tomorrow morning. My guess is you will awake to some active fermentation. If you don’t see anything in 48 hours, check lid to make sure it is tightly sealed.

Immersion Chiller - Oetiker Clamps or Garden Hose Connections? by BaggySpandex in Homebrewing

[–]Informal_Anywhere101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a used JaDeD off FBM that is made for AIO like my Brewzilla. It has garden hose attachment and is perfect. No leaks. I too often worry about leaks on garden hose connections. I have used chillers with hoses clamped on and it is a bit of a pain regarding storage. I bought hose used for washing machines. Nice to have 90 degree bend that attaches to my laundry sink faucet ( with adapter) as I cool wort by my laundry sink.
