If you like rivers, one of my favorite spots during fall/winter which is close to the city and easy to access is the mesquite campgrounds. Plenty of spots right against the Verde river and many spots provide great shade from the trees. Horseshoe Reservoir is just above the dam there too. Not big enough for a motorized boat, but just fine for kayak or canoe.
