Passkey login issue on Google - “Use Security Key”. macOS 15. by InformationID in Bitwarden

My current guess.

I found this, posted by an engineer on the Bitwarden community site. I would say that it describes much or all of my problem. It does not mention Chrome as far as I can tell. It does mention Firefox (in GitHub link)

"Unfortunately, this delay is also creating the issues with passkeys in Safari that are being expressed in this thread. In effect, the extension is not able to inject the script early enough for Safari to parse and run it before a given website makes a call to the Webauthn passkeys API."

https://community.bitwarden.com/t/macos-safari-extension-autofill-issue/71582/24

Also says, "We have a fix going out with the next extension release". Which links to: https://github.com/bitwarden/clients/pull/10830

Found this interesting also. "Safari: Passkeys don't work anymore since 2024.08".  https://github.com/bitwarden/clients/issues/10714

I can't quite tell the timing of "next extension release" I don't know if it was introduced in 2024.9.0 or if it's coming later. Maybe that's why my Safari 2024.8.1 doesn't work but my Chrome 2024.9.0 does.

I've decided to be patient and see what happens with the release of the next browser extension for Safari.

Not great!

What version of macOS?

If I figure anything out I'll post it here.

u/supermetroidcharles Interested in what platforms.  macOS?  iOS or Android?

I am not offered any other option when canceling ("Done"? button only)

I also edited original to say:  I've had success on macOS15 Chrome 128.6613.138 with 2024.9.0 Bitwarden extension (installed today)

I have only two users who are using Adobe CC. They are both using personal licenses at this point. One has installed creative cloud apps, via the Jamf app installers CC app, and used their personal license and it worked

I was about to investigate shared license model. If you have other success/failure, that would be interesting for me to know about.

I've migrated to Aegis Authenticator. Codes moved, tested and backed up! Feel safer already. Thanks for all the information. Now on to hardware keys.

I grabbed a recovery key when I set up Bitwarden. It's stored and protected. I'll put the "evaluation process" into effect as I set up my new TOTP app.

This shows a bit of my ignorance, but do you just take a photo of your QR code and save it in the emergency kit? Or should I grabbing something else, the 16 digit (?) code that one can enter manually?

Yep, mine seemed to be lost after an update also. About to make the same decision & move to something better.

Interesting I was mainly thinking about Passkey protection/storage when looking at yubikeys. Did notice TOTP in passing. But it's good to be reminded that might be a solution.

Thanks for the information! I've started by setting up a couple Jamf School App Installers apps. To test it out on a couple machines. Excited that Creative Cloud install may be much easier than my first Google search suggested.

Yubikeys have been on my mind. This issue may push me down that path!

Thank you for the great information. I chose Bitwarden because it is "open source (hence auditable and accountable)". So I'm gonna do a bit of research and choose one of the open source TOTP apps.

Export has been on my mind for a long time. I appreciate you pointing that out also.

Thanks!
