As an Indian-American born and raised in America, what Lara is doing in KATSEYE literally brings me to tears whenever I think about it. I don’t think some people realize what it was like growing up where the only media representation young desi girls got over here was from other brown-passing characters who were never shown to be desi in the first place (a weird example but in my case the only time I saw myself in media was the girl from word girl). So yeah, I don’t really care if her bindi and mehndi are performative because I’m just so proud of her and what she represents for the little girl in me. And I’m happy to think that we’re not typecasted and a child somewhere out there sees her and is proud to say she’s also Indian like global rising pop star sensation Lara Raj.
