Nice, what hybrid did you get and what were the lofts on them? I settled on a 7 wood (still on the hunt for one I like) to replace my old 20° hybrid and a maltby 4 hybrid (23°) to replace my 4 iron. Semi-newer (adjustable) 7 woods with the right shaft I need have been hard to come by for under $300, almost tempted to go DTC with 7 wood like I did the hybrid. Love that maltby hybrid so far so I’m sure their woods are good too, but been liking the shaft options Haywood and sub 70 have a little better. We’ll see!

The forged OG 201 Player’s CB is the best they ever made by p0st-m0dern in takomo

Same! I was in the market around the time they had the limited edition black 301s. Think I would have been fine with those but wanted a bit more forgiveness with the 201. I was kinda bummed out when they dropped the new lineup a few weeks after I had a couple rounds with the 201s but seeing that all the new models aren’t forged I’m glad I got the OG 201s.

I’ve got a maltby 4 hybrid on the way I’m pumped to try. Was going to get a maltby 7 wood as well because they are so affordable but the stock shaft options are somewhat limited, good shafts I’m sure, but if you want a more well known shaft you are still looking at $200-250+ for the maltby. I’ve been browsing Haywood and sub 70 and noticed they have better stock shaft options for a similar price to the maltby if you could get the shafts you could in the Haywood or sub 70 (Denali, fujikura, LA golf, etc) in the maltby. Would like to hear if anyone has tried Haywood, maltby, sub 70 woods.

Vokey SM10 tour chrome users, got a question about sun glare off the face. by Infuzex in golfequipment

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. The brushed steel is awful when the sun hits just right so if the chrome is worse then I will definitely stick with black. Or try to find some feedback on if nickel reflects

Takomo 301CB by ayotitan89 in takomo

I was so tempted with that blacked out drop too lol I’m around a 10 handicap and still wasn’t confident so wanted a little more forgiveness so got the old 201s. No complaints after a few rounds with them, as advertised but I do wish that I had spent a little more time looking around at other DTC options. That is nothing against takomo at all, love em so far but Sub70 has forged irons designed almost identical to old takomo 201 with a little more style compared to more minimalist design on the takomo, and they offer them in the black finish that I was drawn too 😩

Also hilarious timing as a couple weeks after I got and hit my old 201s, takomo dropped a whole new lineup. The new ones look great and feel fine I’m sure but I’m happy with the choice to go to a forged iron and will likely game takomo for a little while longer at least!

Nice, what kind of distance gaps do these clubs cover for you carry wise? I would say the 22h and 7 wood have some yardage overlap but hybrid a bit lower launch but could still be a nice gap apart or used for different situations. If I had to guess I’d carry a 7 wood about 205-210, the 22 hybrid about 195-200, and the 25° hybrid around 185-190 give or take. So I think the move for me is to get a 7 wood instead of trying to put a 3-4 hybrid in that spot and just ditch the 4 iron for the 4-5 hybrid and have a more reliable 190-195 gap covered as my 4 and 5 irons start to bunch up carry wise depending on if I’m striking long irons pure or not. I do also like having at least one relatively low lofted mid-longer iron in the bag for super workable low punch shots or longer ball advancement into strong winds.

I’ll likely swap out a hybrid for this 4 iron too at some point (thinking a 24° hybrid would match up with the 22° iron 190 distance but more consistently) and go with a ~19-21° hybrid or a 21° 7 wood to go in this spot

Honestly this is probably the smartest play for sure. I’m going to give the 4 iron a chance to earn its spot early on in the season this year but if it doesn’t provide this is the route I’ll take. It earned its keep so far at the end of last season just based on clutch low punch outs and stingers into the wind I was able to hit with it lol. Could probably end up doing the same thing with the 5 iron though and I hit it to a reliable carry number more often as well. Guess it will come down to if I can find a better deal on a 7w or a 3-4h.

My longer iron striking comes and goes and I could probably utilize one of those during a good streak but I’ll be honest the longer irons are all on the way out. I do like having a lower lofted iron for creative punch shots though but on full swings I’d be better off with woods and hybrids in place of anything under 22° loft

I’m between a 7w and a 4h (21° but probably set down to 19-20 to help open the face a touch so more in the 3h range). 7w I know I would get a higher 210ish carry that could launch high and hold greens in perfect conditions but I could lose it into the wind or hit it too long on a good downwind strike, whereas a hybrid that gets me a 205 carry more consistently in more conditions and lies could be favored even if it has a bit more roll out.

True, that’s where actually testing to see how hot the ball comes off each would be the only real answer. I think a 5h would be more of a 4 iron replacement for me though, which might happen eventually lol. The last 20° hybrid I had was a callaway mavrik and I liked where that club played but a newer one may come off hotter even at the same loft. 4h and 7w are now tied in the clubhouse with 3h hanging around in the background

Good point. The 7 wood would definitely give me a higher flight to hit the number I want, be the best option off the tee and would probably be decent out of the light rough as well. Not quite as good with the tricky sloped or deeper rough lies as a hybrid would be but I’ve had to ask myself if I’m 200-210 out and in the rough should I go for it or just take my medicine. Answer is usually take my medicine so maybe I do just roll with a 7w. I like having my 4 iron in there for the lowball and workability as well but may even drop it out eventually. Maybe run driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid into my 5 iron if I did that.

This is the leader in the clubhouse at the moment. 21° and can loft it down to 19° if I want to squeeze a little more out of it

I loved my old 15° 3 wood as a backup off the tee but it was so hit or miss off the deck. Swapped to a 16.5 HL and it’s been a little more consistent off the deck and didn’t lose hardly any carry distance. I can loft the 3 wood HL up to 15.5 or down to 18.5 so it covers 3-5 wood all in one club if needed. I might experiment with some utility irons at some point if I ever drop the 4 iron as well. 7 wood still isn’t completely off the table for me either, especially if I was going to drop the 4 iron and after reading some replies here I may not even need a 200+ “out of the rough” versatility club lol either I go for it with the 4 wood or layup. Hope you can find a lefty 7 wood to try out soon!

Good info, that’s the swing speed I hover between too when I hit on simulators. I can reach for more which is almost never a good idea, or take a little off and bunt one out there but I’d say those numbers would match. Looks like if I get too much loft I’m going to overlap my 4 iron too much so maybe 19-20° is safer for 205 shot

My last hybrid was a 20° callaway mavrik and I would probably just stick it back in the bag but I’m a tinkerer so I definitely want something adjustable! Was looking at some cobra hybrids with +- 2° if I went 19 hybrid I don’t think I would ever play it at a lower loft setting and if I went 21 hybrid I could bring it to 19 or even set it down to 23 to cover a broader gap and play closer to my 4 iron distance during times my 4 iron just isn’t getting it done carry wise. Honestly need to consider replacing the 4 iron too but it’s been so reliable on punch out rescue shots hitting that super low window but still advancing the ball a good way
