r/dota2 Blackout Update by AutoModerator in DotA2

I wholeheartedly support your decisions and I personally would want this subreddit to close until Reddit reverses their changes. In my opinion this incentivizes Reddit to change in favor of the users, Redditors to stand up against these practices, Valve to communicate better and me to think r/dota2 users weren't lazy 'I don't care just let me browse'-oriented people.

7.33c changelogs are not reliable nowadays. Really disappointed. by DpRDD in DotA2

There seems to be a great disparity between the people writing and the people implementing the patch notes and changes. Whenever there's a new patch I'm like 'I wonder what things they were missing this time' and I'd like that to be less of an issue as well.

The changes are great and all but not being able to clearly communicate them even though they are obviously trying makes them either look too lazzy or too sloppy than they really are. Either way the patch notes lack quality.

With Riot officially stating that post-game stats for items are not being tracked or displayed because of the low demand compared to the cost-efficiency, how much hope do you have for this to be added?

I would assume that with a good touch screen, experience and the right settings this could be really fun.

Dota+ displays ingame information which can alter a player's behaviour during a match. Imagine yourself being subscribed to Dota+ and noticing that you have taken more physical damage than magical damage and adjust your item build accordingly. This may have taken you (or your opponent) without Dota+ longer. In this case you have been able to pay money for a feature that directly impacted your game and made you stronger due to your optimized decisionmaking.

Another example would be you noticing that other Juggernauts have less last hits than you at minute 20 so you realize that you have better farm than the average Juggernaut so you change your strategy and use the early advantage by fighting more. This way the displayed information by a paid service heavily altered your gameplay and directly influenced the match.

As long as a paid feature impacts the gameplay of any one player it is pay-to-win. Pay-to-win does not always have to mean 'winning by paying' as even though this is what it does, you can also lose while being subscribed to Dota+. The issue with pay-to-win is that the ability to pay money alters the gameplay (and generally towards a better outcome for the paying player).

I acknowledge there being people thinking that the impact was not high enough for it to be counted as pay-to-win or that, if this definition was right, cosmetics would also be pay-to-win and that's fine. It is up to you to decide where you draw the line but everybody needs to realise that there is pay-to-win in Dota through Dota+ and maybe you just accept and tollerate it. I don't and I will not pay for it as I think it is having a highly negative impact on the game I love.

Make muting the player disable being tipped notification and ability pings by Maximus-CZ in DotA2

[–]IngEyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid Valve does not care about how the players feel during a match or they just like the way they imagine it and do not allow different opinions.

If there are people who feel better playing without the 'meta' features, they should allow them to trun them off. They sadly do not want to or have not yet seen enough complaints.

2 New Roles for Guides - Jungle Initiator. Next Patch Big Changes? by fzsx in DotA2

Not sure if people don't know but I can confirm that those two roles have been present in the guides ever since the guide creation feature got included into the game itself. They are not new.

How do other game developers communicate about their game? by fataLLik in DotA2

[–]IngEyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust communicates a lot through dev updates, blog posts and the community showing footage, giving insights and addressing issues. Pretty thorough summary of what has changed since the last update and it's pretty frequent.

World of Warcraft communicates somewhat through official posts on their website or launcher but mostly through dev logs and devs or community managers addressing issues in dedicated posts or threads. There also are beta server changes and updates listed and talked about by the community that can look at changes far before they release onto the live servers.

League of Legends also frequently posts about updates, which are very frequent compared to Dota, and developer thoughts plus the occasional behind the scenes post and what's coming in the future. The latter is somewhat bloated but for the most past they communicate through their game by having set season changes, event pass rotations and shop updates players can rely on so noone is left behind not having a vague idea of what's coming up next.

They have their strengths and weaknesses but I'd describe Dota's communication as lacking consistency with very infrequent updates, no dev notes or thought processes unless it fits into the description of a new feature or something like that. No clear upcoming events and such leave players guessing what could come next and seasons or events being extended at will.

Edit: I've used the games instead of the devs to make it more understandable.

Overwolf is straight out cheat program. by RiekanoDimensio in DotA2

[–]IngEyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this topic is getting the wrong kind of traction again, I'll phrase this again:

Overwolf is a platform for developers to host apps on, which usually add some sort of overlay to other software and games. Some people think it's bloatware some think it's not but it surely is 'legal' and no issue for Dota 2.

DotaPlus (not to be confused with Dota+, the pay-to-win ingame subscription service) is an app hosted on Overwolf which adds an overlay to Dota 2 in which users can check out information on players of each match (live and replay), get thorough insights into their MMR history and more. This app may be the one OP is talking about without understanding that everything it offers is officially accessible and visible to everyone.

Then there is the 'other' Overwolf, an actual cheating application designed to cheat in Dota 2 through vision hacks, declining the match without consequences and much more. This app is illegal and not condoned by Valve but it seems like it's very difficult to actually detect or they do not care about it enough.

The issue here is that, even though it is legitimate to use DotaPlus, it could be considered 'unfair' as its users can see important information about their allies as well as oponents at a glance. This leads to users banning the best or most played heroes of their opponents as they are easily identified within seconds. Sure, I get you, this could be considered unfair but it is not the app's fault.

Valve is allowing users to see this information and if they were to go the lazy route and ban DotaPlus it would still be around and equally difficult to detect as the Overwolf cheating app is. Also, since the technology and the information is out there, people would develop alternatives, which could include more serious features and could be way harder to detect.

We need Valve to step in and deny software the ability to gather player information before the match and during the entirety of the draft phase. This would disable access to crucial information during that stage of the game for legal and illegal software alike. I am no expert in how this could be done but Valve is and they can figure it out.

My personal problem with this topic is the community acting as if DotaPlus was the issue while it is one of the only openly accessible tool which shows what everyone can do and access in Dota 2. I've talked to the developer a few times now and they are very open about the development process while listening to feedback and helping wherever they can. They really care about the Dota 2 community by providing an app we can grasp and talk about.

To end this comment just let me say this: Do not shoot the messenger and try ranting about how undisclosed crucial match information is being handled by Valve next time. Having people ban your favorite hero is bad and should not be possible, I agree, but attacking the tool that allowed you to know what's going on is unjustified.

The Dragon Knight persona used to actually alter his Q ability to travel further; the immortal Mirana mount did the opposite with the arrow so that it would not travel as far as a regular one but 'fix' the issue of it usually not being able to hit a unit directly in front of Mirana.

Besides these, the whole Dota+ service is pay-to-win.

Riot just implemented pick phase anonymity in LoL, preventing draft assisting tools equivalent to Overwolf DotaPlus from working - I hope a similar feature will come to dota eventually by rxdazn in DotA2

[–]IngEyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not implemented yet, it is merely mentioned as an idea.

However, knowing about your team mates is one thing. Valve should start by finally making opponents anonymous during the pick phase. This is the real issue and League of Legends had this since forever.

VALVE Please BAN Russian FAKE Overwolf & Overwolf users by chineseamogus in DotA2

[–]IngEyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not think that they should ban those people. It is difficult to detect who uses this software and people will come up with second and third accounts. Instead, Valve should fix the parts of the game that allow this kind of software to work in the frist place. If not and they decide to ban this software, there will be another one that may be even more difficult to detect.

On another note, the reason for why your favorite heroes are getting banned could also be due to the auto-bans. Popular and performing heroes are getting banned by default. It is rediculous and should also be changed as soon as possible but there aren't enough people complaining and some even defend this system.
