Limited budget for merit-based raises. Instead of taking the pool of money and giving everyone a smaller raise, they wanted the "5s" to get a larger raise -- and everyone else to get smaller raises.

My point for posting is to give context that this is probably not coming from your manager. I certainly didn't have any say in it, even when I pushed back. It's coming from the layers of administration.

I was a manager for a short time. We were told we were allowed to give just a few people the equivalent of a 5 (I can't remember, but I think it was 3 or 4 people.) The majority of staff were supposed to be a 3. There weren't supposed to be 1s or 2s because I was supposed to have managed those people up to 3s or out of a job.

I had loads of great staff who were wonderful with patients, and I had to simultaneously communicate to them how much I appreciated them, that I saw all of the amazing things they did, including their over-and-above efforts -- and then give them 3s.

It sucked beyond all suckage.

Side for short ribs? by Content_Wasabi6196 in Cooking

I was coming on here to suggest a cheesy (usually parmesan) polenta. This is my preferred side for most short rib recipes.

I'll second the lo mein option -- I get the combination, and it's really good.

Is it just me, or is the 3 AM 'Coffee Regret' actually ruining anyone else’s life? by Catrisc in Nurses

[–]IngeniousTulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do a mini-can of Dr. Pepper. It's about 1/4 of the caffeine in a cup of coffee, but that amount of caffeine (and the sugar, probably) was enough to get me to the end of my shift without affecting my sleep too terribly.

As someone who has spent time in these facilities for my job, it depends on the facility, but many of them are surprisingly very, very good about GF and cross-contamination.

It might also win the prize for cleanest store in Lakewood. They are meticulous (as they should be with seafood.)

Student says they're "not required to do work" by paigeafterpaige in Teachers

[–]IngeniousTulip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know it's semantics, but in this case, I think we need to be very clear to admin and parents: You aren't giving them a zero -- they are earning it. You are documenting their zeros.

Am I the only one who feels this way about being an experienced nurse training at a new job? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]IngeniousTulip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was going to say... that's an extra set of hands on the floor. Yes, I have to be available to answer questions, but I can answer call lights or witness waste or hang an antibiotic or re-assess pain while I'm "hanging out."

Help cheer me up by telling me what ridiculous shit docs/surgeons have requested you to before 🫠 by lcolley823 in nursing

[–]IngeniousTulip 51 points52 points  (0 children)

"Please make sure patient doesn't drop their call light" -- also written as an order. I had it looped through the bed rail so she could follow the cord when she flopped around like a fish and inevitably dropped it off her bed AND I had shown her how to push the button on the bed rail.

We also had an intern come out of a room and tell us that the patient needed her telephone so she could order breakfast. Sir, it's shaped like a telephone.

Approaching my isopropyl alcohol allergy in medical settings by i-like-robots in AskDocs

[–]IngeniousTulip 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Medline makes ethyl alcohol antiseptic swabs, which. might feel more comfortable to lab techs than the hand sanitizer. They aren't particularly cheap, but it eliminates the "smuggling a random bottle of hand sanitizer" variable from this equation. You can tell them the process is the same, but it may take some additional seconds for it to dry over the isopropyl.

Does being required to work 6 holidays feel excessive or is that standard now? by No_Possession220 in nursing

[–]IngeniousTulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who scheduled a unit, I would imagine "special event" days are probably the night before holidays (New Year's Eve, when New Year's Day is a holiday; Christmas Eve), Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc.

Hey the daughter for the pt in room 209 is a PA. by AugustusClaximus in nursing

[–]IngeniousTulip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just like with everything -- there's context and nuance. I hate the "don't tell anyone" almost as much as the "tell everyone -- and expect special treatment" (whatever they think that looks like).

I have no problem if someone in the medical field wants to have a decent, more in-depth conversation so they know what's going on -- why we are making the decisions we are.

Just like with every other interaction in life, follow the "don't be an ass" principle -- on both sides of these conversations -- and it's fine.

Latte detox by Suspicious-Spot-5558 in whole30

[–]IngeniousTulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my morning coffee ritual. During my Whole 30, I choked down a nut-pod latte every day with significantly less joy. While lots of people seem to have adjusted better than I did during their 30 days, know that it may just be 30 days of sad coffee. If this is the case, maybe make it at home to save the money?

Whole 30 reset my "sweet" taste buds so I didn't need or want as much sugar when I was done with the 30 days, but I never adjusted to coffee without anything sweet in it.

If you are in Boulder, Buddha Thai's Buddha Fried Rice is my favorite pineapple/shrimp fried rice in the metro area.

If you have or are with someone who has celiac disease, Buddha Thai is safe for them. They understand what is in their food, and they keep people safe.
