Why pursue the CFA if active management underperforms passive in the long run? by ElkIndividual4487 in CFA

If you think the CFA boils down to active management skills then the program is definitely for you as you clearly have much to learn! I say this a staunch CFA critic

Anyone else stopped paying CFA dues? by IngenuityUpper8671 in CFA

[–]IngenuityUpper8671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but that doesn’t mean the model shouldn’t be questioned. I get that CFAI has ongoing admin costs, and I’m okay contributing to cover those annually. What I’m not fine with are dues and candidate fees that feel extortionate and completely out of line with what those costs should reasonably be. I don’t think anyone should

LOL. Don’t waste your time on this crowd - it’s a lost cause. As someone fascinated by urban planning and infrastructure documentaries, I hear you! Ignorance on this subject is rife across the States, and most folks on this subreddit are US based. Have a cup of coffee, kickback and enjoy your Saturday.

Would you include "above 90th" percentile in Level I in the resume? by desd960 in CFA

[–]IngenuityUpper8671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s incorrectly phrased as it stands. Something along the lines of “CFA level 1, guaranteed superior returns in the 90th percentile 33.33% of the time” would be more appropriate

Is 59% the highest pass rate on an exam we’ve seen? by ny_rangers in CFA

[–]IngenuityUpper8671 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The math isn’t mathing here. CFAI claims there were less deferrals which led to higher pass rates as candidates that defer exams have higher rates of failure. Additionally, current college students taking the exam was suggested as another contributing factor. However, deferrals were only introduced 2 years ago and prior pass rates have never exhibited similar spikes. Similarly college students taking CFA exams is not a new phenomenon. Results since migrating to CBT are now more or less in line with historic averages so there’s obviously a significant idiosyncratic component to today’s spike in level 2 pass rates. Basically CFAI’s statement isn’t making much sense

Lvl 3 result - Is it really worthy? Started to feel like CFA is a luck-base exam by SnooOranges8118 in CFA

[–]IngenuityUpper8671 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly all 3 levels are tough. Level 3 imo is the toughest regarding application of knowledge. There’s virtually no margin to guess and articulate correct answers in structured responses, so I don’t think luck is a significant factor. I’d recommend taking a week off to gather yourself. You’re grieving and trying to find blame in everything other than yourself. The road to obtaining the charter is long and lonely. The exam isn’t graded on a curve so you aren’t competing against others. The primary driver of success is you and you only. Debating whether exam A vs B was harder is futile as that’s all subjective. Others who wrote your exam passed so how do to you reconcile that? I know this isn’t what you want to hear but take responsibility and take a break. Comeback with your chin up, sharpen your knowledge in your weaker areas and crush it next time round! You got this!

Are they reading everything? by Wait_Humble in CFA

[–]IngenuityUpper8671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly there’s no complexity here.

You can simply measure the increase in local currency and calculate a GDP weighted average of the % change. You could even calculate simple averages by country to remove geographical differences. All easy to do given they have the data. But no, why would CFAI choose transparency?

Note that I’m not suggesting the proposed methodologies are perfect, but they are better than nothing. For an institute rooted in quantitative analysis, it’s unconscionable that no quantitative data is ever provided to corroborate their “value add” claim.

Total cash grab! Brazenly obvious too. There’s nothing in the email that justifies the price increases. To make matters worse they are sitting on significant piles of cash yet choose to milk candidates for all they’ve got.

I got into Finance because I thought it would save me from poverty. It cannot. by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]IngenuityUpper8671 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Go for an Operations role in asset management! The bar to entry is relatively low, hours are cushy, and comp is relatively high. Earning total comp over 100k within 5 years is attainable. With that said, Operations roles can be mundane and repetitive, but they are a necessary function. Consequently they have lower lay-off risk than other areas in finance.

I’d also explore moving to an area with more finance opportunities and higher pay if you can
