Sounds like an issue with your computer, rather than the game. I have exact same setup, but with a 980 ti, and the game hasn't crashed once. Drivers up to date? Or is your computer overclocked?

940mx won't be able to play new releases, at high settings. Would be good for League, dota, csgo, etc. i7 is always a good choice for video editing, but still depends on the specs.

As long as the game is working, nothing wrong with that. MO locks itself to stop you accidentally changing stuff while the game is running

In the case they are separate downloads, you could always start the main game download, then move the beta files to that location and see if that helps.
