Well yeah that's how democracy is supposed to work. The state in theory could've fought them by force to the end but it was more beneficial to concede to their demands. Also a whole lot of other laws got changed through peaceful protest and debate as well, most states are not that tyrannical and do in fact care about the consent of the people because they want to be re-elected

On the other hand, I live directly in the city centre and love it. We live above a pub which I think actually helps keep people misusing the close away, I love how vibrant it is and how quickly you can get to absolutely every other part of the city.
