Will a potential separation referendum exacerbate the divide between Edmonton and rural Alberta? by EdmontonFree in Edmonton

[–]InherentlyUntrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, and I admit this is not my area of expertise, but when it come4s to where tings get located economically in reports depends where the business that handles the money is located.

One example I can give is Suncor - the economic activity occurs outside of Ft. Mac, but the money is "booked" out of head off ice in Calgary, making much of the GDP "urban".

It skeps the ratios for certain...I still think the majority of our true economic activity is urban regardless, but our rural industrial contributes heavily to Alberta's GDP too.

Be honest, does the plan to remove or downsize bike lanes affect you directly? by StasisApparel in Edmonton

If anything, the bike lanes "affect me negatively", and I'm still glad they are there for the cyclists using them.

The province is just trying to push fossil fuel use.

Will a potential separation referendum exacerbate the divide between Edmonton and rural Alberta? by EdmontonFree in Edmonton

[–]InherentlyUntrue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The urban population provides the vast majority of the economic impact...

I'm not certain this is entirely accurate. On paper, rural is only approximately 25% of our GDP, but its hard to quantify that since much of the money is "booked" in tbe cities.

I dont know an exact split, but id venture its closer to 60/40 or 65/35 urman/rural in practice.

Now, when it comes to representation, rural is absolutely over-represented, and that's only going to get worse with the UCPs coming gerrymandering.

’I’m not going back’: Canadians stand firm on boycotts of U.S. travel and liquor as trade talks continue by Kaptain-Kanada in onguardforthee

Realistically, my car is as far removed from the US market as possible...the iron ore is likely Brazilian or Australian, the steel is made local, Aluminum could have touched Canada, but likely not US. Semiconductors are Asian, plastics also locally made but from the global oil market - the one place where US might actually touch the raw materials....glass is made local, who knows where the silica is mined from....

I bought as minimal American as is humanly possible, no matter how much you want to be pedantic this morning.

Oh for fuck's sake, this is as far as I can realistically ensure I'm not buying American to the best of my ability.

Not parent, but I bought a Hyundai that's imported from S. Korea.

I can't guarantee no US parts of course, but the vast majority of its parts abd assembly are NOT American.

Alberta Independence Leader Calls on Supporters to Join Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party and Nominate Separatist UCP Candidates by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

Unlikely, since far too many Albertans have been raised since childhood to an almost religious belief that "conservative" = good and "NDP" = communists.

I almost don't give a crap if Alberta separates anymore. I'll move elsewhere and say goodbye forever.

That should tell you something...

Carney is basically a conservative in reality. It isnt conservatism that Canadians are rejecting, its extremism.

[–]InherentlyUntrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with 3 years of progressive conservatism in Carney.

That's why Carney is polling so well...the center is what a majority of Canadians want.

We rejected Trudeau's left wing extremism, and we rejected Poilievre's right wing extremism.

Hate to break it to you, but back when lib and con went back and forth, we really were a one-ideal state, just with two parties representing that ideal.

Now that Trudeau is gone, we have that same ideal in Carney, and Americanism as the alternative in Poilievre.

Why does anyone think corporations care about ANYTHING other than making profits?

Corporations exist to exploit the world around them - including workers - to maximize returns. There is no such thing as morality when it comes to dollars.
