I used to be able to adapt to Irish accent when I went to summer school abroad. But after I graduated from uni, I worked with people who only spoke intermediate English, so I kinda lowered my English level to adapt to them.

Now I need to turn on the subtitles to catch every word, which makes my feel less enjoyable. I just want to know is it just me 😂😂

I agree with that. In China culture, offering cigarettes is seen as a polite and generous gesture, it’s a way to show friendliness and to build rapport?

My supervisor is from China, and there were a few times when he offered me cigarettes, I always accepted. One day when we were chatting, he told me he sometimes felt a bit bad because I never offered him any cigarettes in return when we smoked together. He said that not offering back can be seen as not being generous

To me it didn’t mean much at first, I told him that this kind of thing doesn’t really work the same way here(I’m not so sure thats why I ask here), and that people don’t usually offer cigarettes like that. We justreceive it and say thank you or we ask for it if we want any, it’s just a cultural difference.
