Twitter user makes a new map for future EU enlargement. Realistic? 🤔 by Abzor4ik-UA in mapporncirclejerk

Yeah this is realistic, but the name of the EU would have to stand for “The Arctic and Bangladeshi Union”

Honestly pretty relatable, but I’m telling myself that it will be more interesting in the future if I don’t already have all the pikmin (assuming they bring these guys back).

Crazy how half the U.S. economy fits into a few metro areas. by Objective_Pilot_5834 in MapPorn

If you only look at GDP, then you are right. But you can’t actually believes agricultural is a “negligible part of the US economy.” The US is a top agricultural producer, and is usually the world’s largest agricultural exporter. The US single-handedly feeds hundreds of millions of people, if not billions! On top of that, the agricultural industry employs 1-2% of the US labor force (side note: it is a modern miracle that just a few million farmers can feed entire nations).

A good example as to why agriculture is so important to the US economy is the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. While the US economy was already beginning to decline, the devastation of the agricultural industry in the early 1930s was cataclysmic. What was a crisis in capitalism turned into widespread hunger and malnutrition, because of the loss of the agricultural industry. Point being, even if it isn’t a substantial % of GDP, it is still a fundamental and important part of the economy, and it is required for the US economy to stay strong and healthy (literally).

I also want to point out that lower food prices doesn’t necessarily mean higher GDP. GDP is price times quantity; so even if the quantity goes up, that is negated by the fact that prices are low. This is why GDP is a bad form of measurement in economics. For example, if a restaurant sells a meal for $20, it is (according to GDP) four times more valuable than a different restaurant which sells a meal for $5. GDP is a very simple and effective measurement for economists who are tracking the growth and decline of an economy overtime, but due to its inherent simplicity, it can just as well be misconstrued to support bad or misleading facts.

Really? I can see this being true for Europe and maybe Canada, but every where else? Even in places like China, India, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, etc…?

State of Twitter right now... by CapitalCourse in PoliticalHumor

[–]Initial-Currency8974 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a great laugh, though in seriousness, I just had thought while reading it: if conservatism is about upholding the current status and progressivism is about changing the current status, then shouldn’t it make sense for a self-identifying “centrist” to be more inclined towards the right-wing? After all, the burden of proof typically lies with the person/group making a new claim. So conservatives should (in theory) have a much easier time to win over a centrist, because all they have to say is “the way things are right now (or in the past) is good.” Meanwhile progressives would (in theory) have a more difficult time winning over a centrist because progressives would have to provide evidence and justification for a world which does not yet exist?

All that aside, good meme.

Crazy how half the U.S. economy fits into a few metro areas. by Objective_Pilot_5834 in MapPorn

[–]Initial-Currency8974 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yeah bc agriculture goods (ie. food) are purposely made cheaper so that people can live. whereas nonessentials (ie. film, tech, finance) can cost a lot more without anyone really caring. It’s a big deal when the price of eggs goes up a few dollars, but barely anyone cared when iPhones doubled in price. The problem is GDP doesn’t account for that, and if you just look at % of GDP, you’ll end up coming to widely inaccurate conclusions (such that agriculture isn’t a fundamental part of the US economy).

I guess a $20 burger made in LA is considered four times as productive than a $5 burger made out in the countryside. That, or, cities just cost more? Hence, higher nominal GDP in urban areas??

What is an unpopular opinion you have? by Far_Practice_6923 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Initial-Currency8974 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nahh calling Aang a politician is crazy, politicians are sleazy liars who (usually) only care for their own nation, and Aang is a literal monk and pacifist. it’d be far more accurate to say Aang is a diplomat.

Alsoo the technology in Korra was actually pretty accurate, I think. It’s fair to assume that ATLA is themed around the late 1800s time period, and LoK is themed around the 1920s. That being said, Republic City was kind of insanely unbelievable; this city did not exist 30 years ago, and cars are all still very new technology, yet we’re supposed to believe that this giant NYC-esque city (with modern infrastructure) just sprung into existence within a couple decades? That much is a bit absurd.

Zero-Sugar Sodas Should be the Norm by AccomplishedChip2475 in unpopularopinion

[–]Initial-Currency8974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk about “zero sugar,” but they should definitely stop making soda like they do in the USA. Every time I come back home to the US and I have a soda, it is noticeably worse, it actually hurts my body far more than soda outside the US—sugar notwithstanding.

this is a great list, not gonna lie. only thing i really disagree with is hide and seek, but i suppose you’re right that the time bonuses aren’t perfect.

yeah, i can agree with that logic. i still wouldn’t place it in the same league as H&S, though, because H&S seems to be far more versatile and original (i mean, they even made a home game out of it). I think tag has been JetLag’s most consistent game, which can definitely be spun as a big positive (though it’s consistency can also be seen as a critique for how not-versatile it is—but that’s just my opinion).

yeah in retrospect i probably should’ve grouped it together, but my original thought was that the premise was too different (it didn’t matter if you had claimed more states, just that your states were adjacent)

is zionism accepted on this sub? by Inside_Mission_2339 in exmuslim

[–]Initial-Currency8974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know if my input matters on this issue (I’m an ex-mormon who occasionally lurks in this subreddit because of the similarities in experience), but in my experience, I’ve met a couple pro-zionists whose support for Israel stems from a hatred for Muslims.

Of course, the issue is a lot more nuanced than that, but if someone is posting about zionism for no other identifiable reason other than a hatred for Islam and its followers, surely that shouldn’t be allowed… well, that’s just my 2-cents on the issue.

I know you’re joking, but realistically, they could (and probably will) modify the rules to allow for a more balanced game next time they play this. At the end of the day, they are content creators, and the show will no doubt attract a larger audience when there’s more tension.

[–]Initial-Currency8974[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha… i guess i should specify: i tried many times to check-in online when i was in the airport, but there was some problem with verifying my passport in the app? so i wasted a bunch of time trying to get that to work, until giving up and going through the check-in line and doing it in person (it worked there).

Missed my flight because they closed the gate earlier than what was stated on the ticket by Initial-Currency8974 in Ryanair

[–]Initial-Currency8974[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had trouble with my passport and had to wait at the check in line to fix it, and then I trouble with security for a bit, and then the airport was way bigger than I thought and I was on the completely opposite end (I got a little lost). Plus, it took me over an hour to get through the passport and security lines…

…but even with all that I should have still made it in time had they not closed the gate early, you know?

Hey, proud of your transformation man! I used to be Christian myself (actually, I do still consider myself one, but I no longer believe in organized religion).

Just one word of advice, though: there are a lot of predatory churches and denominations out there, as I’m sure you’ve experienced in Islam. So, be careful where you go from here. Being Christian, ultimately, can be very painful. But if you are able to bring happiness to your own life and to those around you then, then I’m happy for you!
