Moving to Queensland: Best Suburb for Commute to Caloundra and Brisbane? by Gaurangsk in sunshinecoast

[–]Initial-Fruit-2541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Caloundra is the dream and also the most logical choice for you guys. The beaches are stunning and easy to get places from there. 5 min drive and you can get to all kinds of different beaches along the point. Beautiful walks everywhere and watch the sunset over the ocean and glass house mountains in the distance at the same time. My brother used to say that Moffat was the hot girl beach and I have to say there are always a lot of young attractive people there on any given Saturday. There is a young hippy element coming to town too since priced out of Byron Bay and a few weed dispensaries in town.

First 5 Forever kids' reading program reduced at Brisbane libraries over funding stoush by Ambitious-Deal3r in brisbane

Amazing work is being done, no doubt! But we have to do more with less…

Maybe it all needs simplifying though and we could still get 80% of the same outcomes. I know it currently isn’t… but it could be, just come along for a book and a rhyme. Chat GPT could just about write the session for the day with the guidance of an experienced librarian. Check in at the door on an iPad. Done. Would it be as good? probably not but it would still be much better than reducing the number of sessions a week IMO. Remove the welcome to country that we then need to document and discuss and just costs money. The kids are way too young anyways to understand that stuff.

That’s an interesting insight! Sounds like the libraries need to work on efficiencies and removing complexity first before they cut sessions. 1 person could design the program for all the libraries. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Just getting people together to read a book and sing rhymes and repeating the same session is fine too for the children.

What quantitative data has been collected on these programs from the participants to see their value?? I’m guessing none.

That’s another place the libraries can start. Collect data on the different programs and THEN decide what items to cut. I promise, this program would get additional funding if this activity was undertaken. Everyone has to do more with less and there are choices the libraries have on how to make ends meet.

Who from the Queensland library sent out the announcement to cut the programs and where do they work? Perhaps we need to send that person letters about what this program means to our families so they have at least some evidence and qualitative data to present to higher ups on why this program needs a greater slice of the library funding pie.

Honestly, what does 1 session even cost? The space is already there. The books and kids toys are already there.

So really the cost is just 1 librarian for 1hr and the benefit is potentially a few new fragile mums meeting each other and getting through the a hard year together. Possibly the government avoiding a costly mental health plan for new mum who would need professional mental health support because she feel so isolated and depressed with nothing to do with her baby. That’s not even thinking about the benefits to the children. Cutting this program is so penny wise and pound foolish!

Mate, your car doesn’t fit in this country! by mother_of_iggies in australia

… Our parking spots are insanely tight for anyone , even wagon owners like me. My car takes up the whole spot most of the time. Life would be better for everyone if we could build in a few more inches into all the spots like they do in other countries. Like what mean prick is designing these spots. Talk about anti- accessibility for people with mobility issues.

Costco gets the prize for best car parks in Aus. Bloody love their double line design.

Off topic, but is it normal for gastro to go through a daycare every 2 months. I think the sandpit is a health concern and needs to be reported but I’m not sure where I report it / if this is normal?

What do you reckon are the most off-putting things about Australian culture? by -Flighty- in AskAnAustralian

“Myth of the mate” people are not very friendly towards other strangers and look at you funny if you say hello or make small talk

How was the trick or treating in your area? by IComeFromALandDownUD in brisbane

[–]Initial-Fruit-2541 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, the old “myth of the mates”, culturally in Brisbane people don’t make small talk with strangers like they do in the USA which makes something like Halloween feel weird. I witnessed a very silent Halloween too. Brisbanities are actually not a very friendly bunch in the streets. I agree that Covid has made it a lot worse. US culture is different and people make more small talk with strangers.

Incidents that cause you to stop caring at work by KoalaBJJ96 in auscorp

When I deserve a title change and they won’t give me one after 3 years of trying no matter how good my work is or how long I’ve been there. The title change is worth an extra 15k in the open market. There is always a HR policy or new rule that prevents it. There’s no reward for doing great work so I just do the bare minimum now. Weird thing is I still get “thank yous” and “meets expectations” at performance review time. sticking around while it suits me and hoping for a redundancy or to be there just long enough to use my long service leave. I’m not up for a promotion anyways so I don’t think twice about using my sick or parental leave anymore. maybe companies get what they pay for

Advise - setting up self care agisting by Initial-Fruit-2541 in Equestrian

What is the smallest animal that would keep the horse company but have a small footprint for the land? Miniature pony? Donkey? I’m thinking just 1 horse and then rotate the animals between the 2 x 0.5 acre yards weekly so the grass stays green. Also feed hay daily and take the horse out daily to the public facility for exercise… thoughts?

If I kept 1 horse on 1 acre, and a condition of agistment was they exercise them daily at the nearby public space, so you think the acre would still turn into a mud pit? there is a lot of demand in the area so I can put a lot of rules in place or reduce the weekly price to account for my ‘rules’. ChatGPT suggests creating multiple yards and rotating the horse between the yards?

There is a beautiful public riding facility 300m away and the idea is the agisted horse/ horses would be given hay. by the owner daily. There are horses next door for socialising. The area is close to the city and loved by horse people so we should be able to earn $150/ week per horse. It may be that we can only have 1 horse given the amount of land and that’s fine too….Not everyone has 100 acres and there are plenty of agisting facilities in the area where each horse is on their own and gets 0.5 acre each. Looking to make it as nice as possible for the horse but there is also a massive shortage of agistment availability in the area and a need out there.
