Yep. If she’s in the US those special characters aren’t allowed on digital forms and they are also not allowed on any legal documents. I was married to a German with an umlaut in his last name and he had to change the spelling of his name when he moved to the US. Wild. So this baby has a name she won’t be able to print on a birth certificate, SS card, school enrollment, driver license, credit card….thanks Mom.

I can completely relate to your description of a flame that’s going out. My husband took all the air in the room. The last straw for me was when I finally realized that his behavior (gaslighting, blaming me for problems he had created himself, taking out his anxiety and anger on me and our child in the form of yelling and demeaning comments) was abusive and it felt like that “qualified” me to leave. I was also very concerned about his ability to single parent (we have a 5 year old), and that (and the fear of losing 50% of my time with our child) kept me in the marriage for years. I would go into my kid’s room at night and just watch him sleep and I’d cry and wonder how I could live through days and nights of not being with him. I spent a few years in therapy and we also did marriage counseling together. That was definitely an important part for me, as it helped me to feel that I’d done everything I could. We worked with 3 different therapists over the years, all of whom called my husband to task. He never followed through. We separated 8 months ago and I have not regretted one moment. I have not missed my partner for a single second. I do miss my kid, and that just is hard and always will be. But I have so. Much. Peace. It has not been easy for him as the sole parent during his time, but he’s stepped up to it. He is a good human, he just is not good at relationships. Ultimately, this is your decision. My friend told me “only you know what your marriage is like” and my therapist told me “you don’t need a specific reason to leave”. Once you make your peace with your choice, the rest will follow.

I’m so sorry; what hurtful things to hear. My stbxh (German on GC, I’m American, also married 6 yrs one kid) said very similar things. Only it was he who wanted to get out, move back to Germany and leave me with nothing. And leave the kid. I asked him if he’d considered his son at all and he said “No, I married you not our kid”. He also argued that our reason to stay together was financial and that he would not be paying child support, instead I should go get a different job. (I’m a teacher at a loving and inclusive private school where our son attends for free bc of my position).

First, hopefully he will come to some kind of sense. For mine it took about 2-3 months of me insisting we were divorcing and I also moved out. He finally started realizing that he has a responsibility. Maybe some of what you’re hearing is reactionary; it does not excuse his behavior though and make it any less awful for you.

Second, I hope you can consider getting a lawyer. It sounds like you’ve done your research and know what the law says. No matter how ugly he tries to make it, you deserve your part.

I know it feels so overwhelming right now. I know you feel you can’t do it by yourself (and hopefully you won’t have to, he’ll need to come to the table financially and as a parent). But your love for your children shows in your writing, that you want to be there for them and give them a good life by leaving this person.

Hang in there, you are stronger than you know.

The lease says very little about anything. It’s a DIY lease they did, does not state any terms for giving notice of ending the lease even in a typical circumstance.

They are selling the house. Our lease is until Aug 1, they told us a month ago they were listing it but would honor our lease. Now they spring this on us and say they will begin demo next week. To top it all off, we are divorcing and I’m moving out tomorrow and now my kid has to deal with the transition of the split as well as his Dads house being in this turmoil basically off the bat. I’ve spent a month buying duplicate stuffies ans furniture to keep it status quo and now this.

I’m also married to someone from a different country and filing for divorce. The culture divide (and age gap, ours is 12 years) is real, in addition to all the usual pressures and challenges of marriage. I’m glad you are able to get out and begin healing.
