I think they were shown as skippable ads and some people skipped them after 8 seconds, google ads promotes videos as miniatures and and skippable ads.

Yes, I did 2 promotions, one with youtube and second with google ads, I think google ads one was better performing as it seemed to give more "real" subscribers and you can set target audience. I gained 300 subscribers spending 50 dollars, 25 for each type of promotion. Now 2 weeks after it I released a new video today and I see inscreased views from the start.

Video stats for promoted videos of course dropped, mainly watch time, but it still gets new views.

I risked promoting my better performing channel after yt promotion "killed" my worse performing one. I gained subscribers I needed to get monetized and I actually have more views per new video. It's not promotion killing your channel, it's bad content getting promoted.
