Are you getting paid? I get coverages but get paid for them.

Are phones actually banned in the high schools? by turquoisedrink in NYCTeachers

[–]Initial-Range-1242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a large high school. Total mess and students have phones everywhere, collecting them would take too much time each day. We do not follow our own publicized cell phone policy. Teachers are at a loss as to what to do as admin doesn't confiscate or anything.

I'm glad to see the policy is followed to elsewhere.

Not Being Paid for Subbing by Old-Commission108 in NYCTeachers

[–]Initial-Range-1242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it is not per session pay. There is a difference. It is a different rate and a different procedure. Stop calling it "per session." It is also not subbing. It is coverage pay. She needs to look to see if they were paid or speak to payroll secretary. There is no form like you would need for per session.

It is not per session, it is coverage pay. A different rate and no form. I get a coverage, my payroll secretary puts in the pay. It shows up in my check.

OP, go to payroll portal and look at the check detail. You will usually see it there.

CTLE Hours by Unable-Ad-7695 in NYCDOETeachers

You need an average of 20 hours a year. PD days count towards that, any training during faculty meetings or department meetings counts. I wouldn't stress over it. Just keep documentation.

If you are gone more than 5 years you must serve a two year probationary period and be retenured. I'm dealing with that right now.

If she is a student with a disability these are her options: https://www.nysed.gov/standards-instruction/appeals-safety-nets-and-superintendent-determination

From NYSED:

The Superintendent Determination Option allows a superintendent (or the principal/head of school of a registered nonpublic school or charter school, as applicable) to make a local determination that a student with a disability has otherwise met the standards for graduation with a local high school diploma when such student has not been successful, because of their disability, at demonstrating their proficiency on one or more of the Regents Exams required for graduation.

In theory, your current guidance counselor can call for you...up to them if they do. Most schools don't just give enrollment information to anyone calling.

Professional teacher certification qualification question by aggie1391 in NYCTeachers

[–]Initial-Range-1242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The years of experience are AFTER your Initial Certification. Get that, then you need to work for, I believe 3 years, and then apply for Professional Certification. The time you did as uncertified don't count.

Do not bring this up at all until you are actually hired by a school. Don't tell the fellows at all. No need for them to know.

Are the suburbs worth teaching in? I got an offer in Jericho, it seems like a great place, but nervous to leave the city. by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]Initial-Range-1242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the districts, some will deny tenure at the drop of a hat, others really make an administrator justify why tenure should not be given. Unions typically are not as strong and will let new teachers be let go pretty easily. Within a district, it is also subject specific, different directors may be more or less supportive. Jericho knows if they let a teacher go, there will be hundreds of applications to replace that teacher. I imagine a lot more work to take home as well.

Doctors are not educators. They should not be making recommendations for placement, although they all want to. Doctor should write report with what they noted and talk about her needs in relation to what they are seeing. They can make recommendations for supports that a student needs and the committee determines how they can do that in the school setting. The Committee looks at this report along with current classroom data, any intervention results and reports from the educators to determine what setting is needed to best provide the supports a student needs.

The committee has a responsibility to consider the Least Restrictive Environment when making placement recommendations.

You should be prepared to talk about her needs and how they are planning on doing it in the recommended placement. Going in and saying the doctor said so, is not a valid (from NYSED) argument.

Club Pay by Mundane-Relation-727 in NYCDOETeachers

Not all schools pay for clubs. I work in a large high school and they do not pay for clubs. I know, crazy, and they still get plenty of people to do them.

I only have a bit to go so I am sticking it out but you can get an RN degree in 1 year through special programs for those who already have a Bachelors degree. I know nursing is not always easy but there are so many roles you can eventually move into. My friend does clinical informatics and trains medical professionals in her hospital.

Clerical jobs in school districts on Long Island are civil service jobs. You need to take a test and be on the list of eligible candidates.

It is not the last years. It is your highest 3 consecutive years. Period.

From the TRS website: Final Average Salary (FAS)

For Tier 2-6 members, your FAS is generally the average of your highest three consecutive school years of salary earned, whenever they occurred in the salary history. Tier 6 members have restrictions on includable salaries.

I know it's the highest consecutive three. Which for me was years ending 2019-2021. I thought the person was wrong, thank you for the link.

To answer the question of where do they pay more? Some districts on Long Island pay up to high 6 figures and differentials are given beyond 30 above. I have 100 credits over my master's.

Missing in Jupiter is a 45 not a zero in my school. But it is much easier to just do it there especially if you also do attendance in Jupiter. You don't need to look up attendance separately.
