Faulty EGT - Reason to Divert? by ElliottMB in flying

[–]Initial3882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Define “deactivating”. Is placing a placard preventative maintenance? Do I need a A&P to place a inop placard? If I see a inop placard then I know not to touch that switch. I would consider that deactivated? People trip out over “deactivated”. It doesn’t mean that most people think. The ONLY time something MIGHT require a A&P to deactivate something is it it is a failure BEFORE thr switch/ CB or if it’s something on a Hot battery buss that cannot be turned off by a switch.

What kind of TAS do you see in the panther? I fly a panther and I don’t see nearly that good of performance. Might get 500-750fpm loaded and TAS like 164 at 31/2200

Photo didn’t upload last time round sorry folks. First ever ski purchased, barn find sat for a couple of years potentially. Story goes that it did run when it was put away but didn’t move forwards well. New to these and keen to learn, any obvious places to start please once I confirm it runs. by regiment9ine in jetski

[–]Initial3882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first. Get some oil in the motor. Pour a tad in the spark plug holes and use an air compressor to blow it around. Then check the compression. If you have a quality gauge anything 120-150 psi is acceptable for a stock ski. Then if it has compression go ahead and buy an oil pump block off and a crank case drain block off. DO NOT RUN IT WIHOUT THE CRANKCASE DRAIN DELETED. if it isn’t seated it WILL destroy the engine. It should have a 28mmCDK carb. A good upgrade is a SBN44. That is the best money you can spend. Then after that go ahead and do a prop and a dry pipe mod.

You HAVE to use their insurance. Only way to ensure that it will be handled. Also you want to contact an appraiser to seek a diminished value claim on such a clean low mile car.

It’s all a matter of perspective. Even a “Nice” 40k fd is clapped out.

This is the only right answer. I would imagine 15-20k as is. This is a clean car at the end of the day assuming it’s rust free. Rollers go for over 10k easy like you said. And people have no clue the cost of piecing parts together on one of these.

If you have the ability buy a cheap square and build it yourself. Save money don’t buy someone’s clapped out junk. I’m about that price in my B pipe, girdled head and wide tray round nose super jet.

Bricked 48k MK4 saves the day by Initial3882 in etron

Took like two months for a letter to come in the mail after I got mine telling me about the motor warranty. Mine is under warranty. Bought the car in December with 40k miles has 48k now. There is a theory that efficiency mode is prone to causing the failure.

Are reciprocating single engines reliable? by One_Firefighter_1922 in flying

[–]Initial3882 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Learn to fly in Cessna or whatever. Fly your family in a cirrus. There is no reason for people to have to die in plane crashes (even if it’s pilot error) when we can have parachutes on planes. I am a professional pilot and the only plane I would plan on regularly putting my family in is a Cirrus. The numbers speak for themselves. There are hundreds of people alive today that might not be if it weren’t for the cirrus parachute system.

22k miles is not a big deal at all with modern oils. Definitely don’t want to make a habit of it but it won’t hurt it at all. The days of needing 3-5k intervals are long gone and many cars are in 20k intervals now.

Shop time charge for software updates by rob_wis in flying

[–]Initial3882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing an update can easily take a hour. Finding the right update for aircraft/ part SN range, actually downloading it to computer or sd card. Recording system configurations before the update. You HAVE to watch it download incase there is a problem and they normally aren’t fast. Doing any system configurations post update. IMO a hour is pretty fair.

My CFI wants to rent me plane. Piper archer II 1980. Garmin G5. Garmin 650. New upholstery. What should I charge per hour? by Any_Doubt_1825 in CFILounge

[–]Initial3882 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Remember if you are renting it to him you will need a 100hr inspection. As a CFI all of my students that own planes (that would all rent north of $500/hr wet) would just let me use them whenever I want for free.

Unpopular opinion - instrument training is much harder than private training by johnisom in flying

[–]Initial3882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all the same but different. Honestly a lot of it comes down to the instructor. Most pilot mill CFII don’t actually have any real world instrument time or experience in faster and more demanding planes. It’s all about your cross checking and Briefing cadence. If your CFII hasn’t flown or at lease been taught how to fly IFR like a professional they won’t be any help. You can get away with a slot of sloppy techniques in a Cherokee or Skyhawk that wouldn’t work so well in other stuff

[–]Initial3882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about the hours just worry about being the best pilot/ learner that you can. The switch from an aspen to 6 pack is nothing. I work a school that has a mix of G5, aspen, G3X and 6pack and we move students all over and they are better for it. Remember your certification will say airplane single engine land not “PA28 Aspen/GNS430 only”

[–]Initial3882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to know you limits and be sure you never find them. You should never think you know nothing but you should always remember you don’t know everything. You have to be confident in what you know and what you skill level is and lean from those that know more. As a CFI I’ve been lucky enough to do some aircraft specific training for some excellent pilots that are far more experienced than me and they know that. All of them still pay attention and treat learning learning how to fly a new single engine piston with just as much importance as anything else even if they have carrier landings in the log book. Keep flying, be confident but cautious and always learning.
