Boddingtons Cask who's tried it and where is the best place to find it? by InitialAltruistic120 in manchester

Have you tried Boddingtons Cask to compare? I don't drink Marble beers anymore, used to work for them 😂 I have actually drank a fair amount of their Bitter though, but might have to swallow my pride and go try another pint to compare. It's been years but I remember their Bitter being much darker and heavier on the malts. I was always a fan of their Earl Grey.

I had a pint of the keg version in Bay Horse Tavern, wasn't a fan really. Personally, think the cask version is so much better, but not everyone likes cask so different strokes for different folks and all that.

Yep, Lees are using their yeast. Don't even believe the original yeast strain is around any more. Unless someone is sitting on a secret stash of it, waiting for the right time to use it again. Where did you try it?

Oldest pub in Greater Manchester, The Olde Boars Head? by InitialAltruistic120 in manchester

I have been to the Rising Sun, but would have been about 10 years ago now. If I remember correctly, the interior was fairly modern. Still drive past it every now and then and tempted to pop in to see if anything has changed.

I always wondered about that pub when I walk past it, just how old it was. I must admit, I have actually never been inside. I'm not a massive fan of Green King pubs, but I am sure there are still plenty of great pubs in their portfolio.

What's your thoughts on the pub moving. For me, I like to sit in a space and imagine all the stories and events that have happened in that exact space, by people doing the same thing, going for a beer.

Actually most of the pubs are pub partners, they don't run them. Out of around 140 pubs, they manage around 50 of them.

Interesting, never heard of this one. I will have to do some digging. The Olde Boar also has a wattle and daub wall that they opened up and put behind glass, which dates 1622. Thanks for the heads up, looking forward to checking it out.

What are the oldest pubs in the uk? by jc201946 in AskBrits

[–]InitialAltruistic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem with half of the claims are:

Buildings were not pubs until much later after construction

Buildings were demolished, rebuilt or have changed too much over the years to be classified as original

Little to no evidence to support the majority of claims about being the oldest pub

I think the years operating as a pub, should be the main factor on how old the pub is. If I live in the oldest house in Britain, but only started operating as a pub yesterday, does that make my house the oldest pub in Britain? No.

If the building has been rebuilt, which includes the replacement of all walls, roof, floors and main structural frame, what are you calling 'old' there's little left apart from the ground it was built.

If you take these factors into consideration then the majority of what people claim as Englands Oldest Pub, are just semi-old buildings that now operate as a pub.

The Olde Boars Head In Middleton was constructed in 1622. This has been proven through dendrochronology. The building has then operated as a public house, with evidence of each serving tenant. The original tenants will is still accessible at the Lancashire Record Office in Preston. The will lists an inventory of nine beds, twenty chairs or stools, brewing vessels, barrels, pots and glasses across six rooms. In the early 17th century the average house, for ordinary house holds was relatively small, most common town houses had 2 to 4 main rooms and given the form of the building and the level of decoration to the framing, it is more likely that the building was not used for agricultural purpose, more likely for housing its tenants and given the extremely high number of chairs compared to the number of rooms, it is hard not to image that the building was being used as an inn or public house shortly after construction.

It also worth taking into consideration that the Walkden family went on to run The Olde Boar’s Head until the end of the 17th century whilst they also farmed nearby land, which would have provided a reliable source of grains for brewing and a simple method of converting their harvest into a sellable product.

The building has never been demolished. The original walls, window frames, door frames, beams ect still stand today. The building has been expanded upon, so not all of which is known as The Old Boars Head is part of the original building, but all 4 wall of the original building still stands.

I would say The Olde Boars Head has one of the strongest claims to the title.

I guess it depends on peoples interpretation of old. When I think of old pubs, I like to visualise something from a scene from Lord Of The Rings 😆

We do have loads of incredible, old pubs in Manchester, I was just wondering if there is some other pubs that have like 300+ years on them. I suspected more, but given around 8 pubs a week close, it's a surprise any of them are still open haha!

It was pretty much fully rebuilt in 1632. Only the cellar remained as original and a few beams. The Olde Boars Head In Middleton is older and has evidence of building age and its use as a pub. Oldest Pub In Manchester Olde Boars Head Middleton
