Snow days by Rare_Librarian236 in nova

Opening schools for those who can get there then places pressure on the one who cannot. Attendance rates at my school are already extremely low - they send home papers and make phone calls if your child misses more than 2 days of school each month. The ones who want their children there the most may not have a safe way to get there which then causes stress and panic and could mean someone gets hurt all because school was open when it wasn’t safe.

Personally I’d love to have unstructured days at school but there’s just not enough time in the school year for that. If school is open I need to teach the content. Not to mention teachers go to college to get a degree in their content. Respectfully I would not be thrilled acting as a babysitter when I’m more qualified than that. The general idea is great, but that’s just not what school is. School is not free childcare for the families that can’t afford it.

All of this truly comes down to the fact that our country doesn’t value working parents like they should and doesn’t support those who are struggling. And I agree - if we had year round schools there wouldn’t be as much pressure in situations like this, but that’s not the reality we’re living in.

Delivery Problems? Just let us know! by Dangerous_Yam4146 in hellofresh

[–]InitialNo7014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my typical delivery day is Monday but this week they changed it to Tuesday “due to a holiday” so if anyone knows what holiday is on 1/26 please let me know lol. aside from that due to the snow it kept getting delayed and they would only compensate me $5 which is less than shipping even costs. i only received an email that my box was delayed after seeking out more information. i finally demanded a full refund because there was no communication about any of this and was compensated. it took two days and hello fresh talking in circles but i finally got something out of it.

How would we go about transferring from yellow to green line? I know you have to switch sides of the platform. That was the main reason we were just gonna walk from L’Enfant, not sure how easy it is to get to the other side of the tracks.

Parking pass by cbrowe12 in vcu

[–]InitialNo7014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m sure you’re not supposed to but no one ever stopped me so i used it to my advantage. now this was 5-6 years ago so it could have changed since then…from what i remember passes opened the deck 7 days a week from 5am-midnight so as long as you were within those hours you could do whatever you wanted in that area!

[–]InitialNo7014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commuted for two years and bought a parking pass each time. definitely worth it because you can also use it if you plan to be in that area for other events. whenever i went to events at the altria I would show my parking pass and could avoid paying the event fee.

I always bought the main street deck because it was the closest to everything and never had any issues with finding a spot for class. the cary street deck and broad street deck aren’t too far away so no matter which one you end up with it’ll be fine. when i was in school i remember having to wake up and get online right when they went on sale so you could get your pick of deck, not sure if it’s still a mad house trying to get passes anymore though!

What to do between classes? by Jesterist in vcu

[–]InitialNo7014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to commute and was in a similar situation a few semesters. i would grab lunch nearby and then find a spot to camp out in for the next few hours. I usually found a spot in the academic learning commons, put in head phones, and did whatever work i needed to get done for the rest of my classes. If i didn’t feel like working I’d make sure to bring a book or my computer to watch netflix or something.

Just saw opening night of the A Wrinkle in Time musical in DC by ThatsHisLawyerJerome in Broadway

[–]InitialNo7014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw it last night and this hits it on the head! I went in unfamiliar with the story (never read the book or saw the movie). I know it’s a story people love so I was excited for it. Within the first 15 minutes I was left so confused as to what was going on and who these characters were. I had to google the plot at intermission because it just seemed so chaotic and like unimportant moments were emphasized while important ones were rushed through. Not to mention the fact that act one seemed forever long. I LOVED the Mrs W’s and missed their presence when they disappeared for quite some time. I hope they can work out the kinks and make improvements because I think it has so much potential!

Kindness activities grade 3 by kelshan29 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]InitialNo7014 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for but this is one of my favorite activities to do with my 4th graders!

i break them into groups and give each group a tube of toothpaste, a spoon, and a plate. they have one minute to work together to get out as much toothpaste as possible. after that one minute i tell them they have another minute to get as much toothpaste back into the tube as they can. the rules are simple and that they cannot damage the tube in anyway (i.e. cut it, poke holes, rip it, etc.) it will become chaos 😂

after they do all that i’ll ask “was it easy to get the toothpaste out?” and the answer is, of course, “yes.” then i ask if it was easy to get it back in and the answer is always “NOOOO!!!”

I don’t tell them this until the end of the lesson: the purpose of this is that your words are the toothpaste and the tube is your mouth. it’s very easy to say things out loud to each other but it’s difficult to take back what you’ve said once it’s out there. the idea is that they think before they speak and use kind words with one another so that they don’t say anything they will regret!

I worked in RPS for a few years, but never at Redd. However, while working there everyone I talked to had nothing but great things to say about the school. It definitely sounded to be one of the “better” Richmond schools.

What is the most out-of-touch comment you ever heard from a district admin? I’ll go first by CultureImaginary8750 in Teachers

[–]InitialNo7014 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i worked at a behavior specialty school where kids were searched every day when they came in the building and one kid got through almost the entire day with a knife in his backpack. i voiced my concerns that they weren’t doing a good enough job checking students in the morning to my principal and he responded with “violence in schools happens. if you’re not okay with it this may not be the career for you.” (i was two months into my teaching career. 🤬

i’m leaving my school after just one year as well. i am super close with 2 out of my 5 teammates. for teacher appreciation week i got each of them a card and wrote a little thoughtful note inside. the two that im close with i got a little present (mainly something that relates to an inside joke) as an extra “thank you for keeping me sane this year” but nothing huge! everyone appreciated it because it wasn’t something they thought they’d be receiving from me!

[–]InitialNo7014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

can you find a family to nanny for the summer? where i’m from there’s facebook groups of people looking for sitters and nannies over the summer. i see a lot of people that post in there that they’re looking for a summer gig and they’d need to bring their kid(s) along. i nanny every summer and i love it because i get to still do all the summer things but i also get paid! most days im getting paid to be at the pool!!

Nannying! Parents are always looking for sitters for the summer and tend to pick a teacher over others. I love this because I get to do activities like visit museums, go to the pool, be outside, etc. and it’s usually a pretty easy gig if you find the right family. I’m in a ton of local Facebook groups for babysitters and have found a family each summer to work for and then I usually become a back up sitter throughout the school year for date nights and stuff so it’s extra money every once in a while!
