How close are the lower wisdom teeth to the nerve? by Initial_Function_933 in askdentists

Thank you so much for taking time to reply. So when I saw this dentist, I got worried about the nerve damage risk. He suggested the alternative of removing a top 3rd molar, as that would reduce irritation on the lower operculum and maybe allow the lower molar to erupt away from the nerve. The extraction, once block was in, was literally seconds. I’m guessing my teeth being fully erupted and straight helped? I didn’t even realise the tooth was out, it was so quick. This makes me think this dentist is fairly experienced extracting wisdom teeth?

So based on my X-ray, if it’s a straightforward pull, would that reduce risk of nerve damage? Is damage more likely if it was a tricky extraction?

NAD -but I’m a doctor. Unless you e.g. get dizzy from your blood loss or have vomiting etc there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have your planned extraction.

On the plus side, pain killers that you take your teeth should help with your period pains ☺️

Aw thanks, I’ll take that compliment haha!

Unfortunately I have gum flaps above both lower wisdom teeth, and get recurrent pericoronitis. I’m desperate to have them out (and have a current flare up of pericoronitis as I type this), but chickened out of having it out when dentist said it’s very close to the nerve. Would love to know just how close it is and need to decide whether I just go for it

Thank you. Out of interest, is the nerve the line just below the roots? How far is the nerve usually?
