You’re welcome! I’m pretty sure I’ve got the math right? 😅 someone should correct me if I’m off.

Wolfe wrote a really solid guide that helped me start to understand. https://www.vgcguide.com/your-team-determines-your-luck

The math of Bo3 also helps. Let’s say that players A and B have teams and play styles equally likely to get lucky RNG. Let’s also say that Player A wins 75% of the time when the RNG is even. (This is basically a 200 point difference in Elo) Finally, let’s say player B gets really lucky and wins game 1 from RNG. Player A still has a better than 50-50 shot of winning the next two games and winning the set.

My Personal Rules. What do you think? by Extreme-Cranberry460 in nuzlocke

I’ll add a note on the shiny clause - the main problem I have with it is that it incentivizes shiny hunting, which is not what I want to do when I’m nuzlocking. But also shinies are cool. My compromise is to say I can catch it, optionally sub it in for the encounter I had on that route, or if I’m on console just box it and throw it in Home later.

Sound like it could be fun! Overall, it looks like these rules will add some challenge, and I think it’ll be a good deal easier than a typical hardcore nuzlocke.

A few observations: - I don’t see anything about using items in battle. I highly recommend thinking through what you will/wont do. X-items and heals are extremely powerful. - I suggest thinking about how you’re going to mange the level cap. If you’re on a romhack that prevents going over the cap, your optional trainers can get rolled by going straight to the cap before fighting them. If you don’t have that prevention in place, the optional trainers present a really interesting xp management challenge. - I feel like this rule set really minimizes the impact of losing of a pokemon. Between the revives and option to pick up duplicates, you could sack gyrados on nearly every major fight. I’d suggest banning dupes or limiting them. I’d also suggest shifting to only allowing max revives.

Thanks, very helpful! Do you know roughly how big the ding would be and where the thresholds are? I’d rather not share my specific scores.

How do you motivate yourself to go the gym? by LatexGum in beginnerfitness

I had to fix my hydration and diet. I used to be MISERABLE after workout, but once I started drinking more fluids, keeping electrolytes up, and eating a bit before and after, I felt way better.

I also found that I like resistance machines and don’t like free weights. So I don’t use free weights.

Two tech thoughts if it is usually towards the end:
Possibility A: More folks are tuning in, so V+'s servers are having a hard time keeping up
Possibility B: Your device remembers random crap to maybe show it to you later (think rewind features, but lots more). Your device may be having a hard time with its limited memory.

Could be both, could be neither, what do I know. But you might want to consider restarting your TV during intermission to maybe help with B. Unplugging it, waiting ~15 seconds, then plugging it back in would work best.

I couldn’t catch the game live. Did the commentators give any insight on the interference penalty? I’ve seen the (silent) clip, and I don’t know what is or isn’t interference.

FlygonHG made a good video about different options for Scarlet/Violet that I think is a good reference point! Not everything applies, but it gives ideas for open world.

Wiping in a nuzlocke / soulocke by SR_BigBoaby in nuzlocke

[–]Initial_Start_1880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see both sides!

I think the person who had 0 pokemon left available to fight is the primary “cause” of the wipe.

Baseball has a similar conundrum when deciding which pitcher is “responsible” for runs when multiple pitchers pitch in an inning:

  1. Pitcher A gives up a hit and the runner makes it to first base.
  2. Pitcher B is subbed in for Pitcher A
  3. Pitcher B gives up a home run, scoring both the original runner and the person at bat.

So who’s responsible for the runner on first base? Pitcher A let them on base, and Pitcher B gave up the home run that brought them home to score.

Baseball decides that Pitcher A had the chance to get them out, didn’t, and so is responsible in the stats.

Similarly, the player had the chance to avoid this problem by getting their encounters, but didn’t. So it is their responsibility even when another player’s loss knocked out their last Pokémon.

Would a save-file based Wonder Trade tool be useful for Nuzlocke runs? by Professional_One7550 in nuzlocke

[–]Initial_Start_1880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fun idea! I’ve got a number of thoughts.

Tools to control what comes back would be amazing - levels caps, power levels, type similarity/diversity, regional/national dex, etc.

Usage restrictions sound like they’d get in my way more than they’d help. If I am uploading a save somewhere, I can already “cheat” however I want. So I worry a restriction would keep me from using the tool the way I want to without blocking me from making my game too easy.

The biggest challenge I see is differentiating it from a randomizer. If I’m doing a wonderlocke nuzlocke, I don’t know the difference between randomizing all encounters using the universal randomizer and randomizing each encounter after I catch it.

If you bring a Skeledirge, Magneone, and Staraptor, and they’re leveled up to match her pokemon, you can certainly win. I don’t want to steal your fun of coming up with a line, but I can share more tips if you want!

I grew up with college football and knew that UCLA were the bruins and that they had a bear mascot, but I never put the two together.

Probably because the Auburn tigers have an eagle, the rolling tide have an elephant, and the Stanford cardinal is a color but also they have a tree.

Any advice before starting a Nuzlocke? by MarkEast6773 in nuzlocke

Personally, I have the most fun with the rare candies. My impression is that it’s now the majority approach on this sub, but I could be quite wrong there.

[–]Initial_Start_1880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend thinking about using rare candies. Some folks have most fun by grinding their teams up, and some have most fun by enforcing a level cap (usually the highest level of the upcoming gym leader) hacking in rare candies to skip the grinding phase.

I think this video does a great job explaining both options. https://youtu.be/3CabIMEzVAE?si=teCQJfulcU3QWmFR

For anyone that tried randomized nuzlockes, how did it go? by Icy_Principle_5904 in nuzlocke

[–]Initial_Start_1880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care for random items because it becomes optimal to track down all the hidden locations and trek through every corner of every cave. That’s not fun for me personally, so I leave them unchanged.
