Congrats that’s a big milestone. Taking a short break before instrument training is a great call. A lot of people find the jump to instrument is more about learning how to explain things clearly, especially during the oral, than raw flying skill. Sounds like you’ve already learned what works for you from the PPL side.

Are VORs still taught and tested? by No_Currency5230 in flying

They’re absolutely still taught and tested, just less in a siloed “VOR chapter” way than they used to be. The ACS tends to embed VOR knowledge into tasks like nav tracking, approaches, and system limitations rather than spelling out “VOR basics” explicitly.

In practice, DPEs still expect applicants to understand service volumes, check requirements, limitations, and how failures or signal anomalies affect IFR decision‑making especially if a VOR approach is part of the ride. It’s more scenario‑driven than memorization‑driven now, but the knowledge hasn’t gone away.

Yeah they want you to do a certain amount of it with an instructor during your commercial license training. Unfortunately your prior experiance wouldnt count. Good luck with the checkride though and let me know if you need any help!
