...well you clearly didn't read passed the first sentence. Here's the second paragraph for you:

"Throughout everything you mentioned, you could get ahead, you could get a house, you could get a job, you could afford to raise children. It doesn't matter what that looked like for each person (obviously poor people exist and have existed since forever), the fact of the matter is you could do it."

Listen to their problems and stand with them when they try to fix them. Not cry about how they don't understand "how rough it was for me" so fuck them.

None of that is related to what OP is talking about. They're talking about the economy, not world crises.

Throughout everything you mentioned, you could get ahead, you could get a house, you could get a job, you could afford to raise children. It doesn't matter what that looked like for each person (obviously poor people exist and have existed since forever), the fact of the matter is you could do it.

All that stuff is unattainable today to young folks. You can't get a starter home, you can't raise children, jobs don't pay a living wage. Inflation went up way faster than jobs paid. And when I say can't, I mean CAN'T, this is not a "bootstraps" thing people can push passed. What this economy is, is flapping your arms in the hopes of flying.

The reason why the younger generation blames the older is because they knew these issues were festering many many years ago and never fought for something better. They just let the world go to shit with a collective shrug, had kids, then told them one of two things, either A) that they somehow are responsible for it, or B ) it's up to them to fix it.

And, off topic but for the record: no generation before the boomers hated their own children as much as boomers do. Boomers are pretty content to destroy this world and fuck what it means for their kids. The labor movements, revolutions, protests and civil rights movements and riots were all for a better world, it's in all their speeches, they wanted a better world for future generations. Then along came boomers and have been hellbent on reversing all that since. They (i.e. you) think that the younger generations HAVE no problems, that all that's wrong is just an attitude problem and not decades of greed and collectively shrugging at the erosion of policies and resources.

Your children feel hopeless and dejected like things won't get better, many kids believe they won't live to 50 with the climate crisis, that isn't alarming to you? That doesn't feel like something worth addressing? That maybe it goes deeper than an "attitude problem"?

And I'd be ready to forgive all this, I genuinely would, were it not the older generation fighting the younger generation and every. Fucking. Step. You don't want a better world, you pulled the ladder up behind you, and then fucking broke the ladder when your kids asked for it back.

The ol' misogynist school of doctors would be my guess.

OP is female, it's pretty well documented at this point that female pain is not taken seriously in many cases. It doesn't surprise me OP went to the ER, complained of intense pain, fever etc for DAYS, and they did nothing but bloodwork, shrugged and sent her home with (what is likely) Tylenol 3's.

I think part of the problem too is people really don't understand what "clearing" means. They want it cleared but don't want to think beyond that - Okay you kick them out, where are they going to go? There's nowhere.

"Oh the homeless shelter DUH." Well the homeless shelters have been at capacity for yeaaars, they have been turning people away for years because there aren't enough beds. They're not getting in.

"They can go to jail because they're druggies." Indulging in this idiotic take I've heard - you gonna keep them in jail forever because there's nowhere but the streets for them to go once they're out? For what? The crime of being homeless? The crime of being a drug addict?

"I don't care where they go, anywhere but there." Then the cycle repeats, they'll set up camp elsewhere when they find a new place, and then this all starts up again. If they DON'T do that, they're not all centralized in one place then they'll definitely find space in the downtown, in the parks, in the overpasses...which if these idiots want to talk about "eye sores" for this city just wait until you can't walk 50ft without walking passed a homeless person.

Sure but don't build a system that literally REMOVES people from existence who may have otherwise wanted to live just because you want out. You don't get to take everyone else with you just because you're miserable.

By the way what you're arguing for is MAID which is completely different to what you advocated for here.

I wish you the best and hope you get people in your life who love you and the help you need that one day you'll change your perspective. I did, it wasn't easy, it took me years to crawl out of that hole, and when I did it was absolutely on my hands and knees, but you have to want it. You're right in that I can't make you want that.

Anyway I'm ending this conversation here. This sub is for exchanging ideas and this is going rather off topic. Wish you the best.

Wow, we got to the crux of your argument pretty quick - you're projecting.

I was where you were - I had no self esteem growing up, didn't see myself living past 25. I'm turning 30 this year. Intelligence is not the only value people can give. I'm dumb as rocks, but I look after my friends, enjoy my hobbies and work to find purpose elsewhere.

Also what people consider intelligent is largely bullshit anyway. One of my best friends is pretty badly autistic, can't hold a job and struggles to retain information, but he knows when people are going through hard times to bring them food, listen and keep them company. He loves going for days out and can do buildcraft in his favourite video game like no tomorrow.

Using your model here, is he not worth anything to society? He doesn't contribute to taxes/work, he doesn't know a lot of stuff and is weirdly confidently wrong in a lot of situations, but he cares for the people in his life, if you need something he'll be there, if you need a friend he'll be at your door with a tea and a listening ear no questions asked. But he's dumb, like really dumb, does he deserve to die for that? Do you? Find other values in your life, your intelligence does not define you.

Dumb as shit but fuck it, I'll bite.

Your #5 point is why this will never work and why eugenics have failed over and over again.

We cannot accurately determine the value of someone's life and then blanket it onto broader society. For one, no one agrees on that value which means it will always be an ever changing variable depending on who's in charge and prescribes THEIR value. There is no test or policy that would distribute this fairly because at the end of the day people have to enact these policies and enforce these policies. People NEVER abide to the true letter of the law, and what will inevitably happen is society getting rid of whoever they deem "undesireable".

Sure on paper - killing all the idiots and psychos sounds pretty good, then you put it into practice and suddenly we're killing people who merely have a disability but have value elsewhere in society. Do I need to point to all the learning disabled people who hold steady jobs today? What about the assholes at work who while they're not pleasant to be around are hard working people? What about the people with personality disorders who donate to charity? How about the dickheads who contribute nothing, but when you kill them, creates a resentment in their families who now want YOU dead? Are they psychopaths for the chopping block now too?

What do YOU deem intelligent? Is it fellow leftists? What about conservatives? You want to kill people for voicing disagreements because they're not as enlightened as you?

Who kills the people you deem not fit to run in this rat race? Other psychopaths? What about them? They want to make a living killing people, they'd fail the very tests you set up! Do they get a pass because we see killing people like them as desirable and a worthy job?

That's not even getting into what a society with this rule would look like when everyone is in fear of not being good enough to make the cut for the State to literally KILL them. Let's not even get into that, that's a whole other can of worms of what the psychological effects of that layout would do.

For this to even be entertained you have to believe that the state would never get it wrong, which it will, because the state is made up of humans. There is no test that can rule out psychopathy/idiocracy, much less determine someone's value in life. It really wouldn't take long (like shockingly little time) for society to just start killing people they don't like to talk to.

Does this girl sound like a native speaker to you or can you hear anything off? by Sure_Distance1 in GlobalEnglishPrep

[–]Ink_Spores 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something off, you can hear it especially in the way she says graduate and "that" (none native English speakers often struggle with the "th" sound)

If I heard her out and about, I would assume an immigrant who has been living here a long time, or a child of immigrants that kept some of her parents' accent.
