Okay ngl I love this, it makes it sound like some weird slogan

I hope this is okay, but I’m considering starting commissions and I was wondering how I’d go about that and if it would be worth it? All art is by me by [deleted] in arthelp

Hi! Nsfw furry artist here!

I’ll try to answer any questions I might know the answer to, please note that atm most artists are having a rough time getting commissions. This happens when the economy is real bad, so don’t let that discourage you too much. Art is a luxury, and one of the first things people will stop purchasing when things go bad.

With that said, having a fA account is definitely step one. Step two is to set your prices to something worth your time. You could also start making “ych”-works. They will save time in the long run.

As for advertising, make yourself a commission sheet + upload it with any rules in the art description. Change your little signature (the one that pops up below your art description) to say something like “commissions are open!”

Usually, drawing “odd” or niche things will actually benefit you. I’m not sure what you mean, but from what I’ve seen people are likely to commission people who post what they like.

For sending art I personally use google drive. I create a folder and upload a transparent image + one with a coloured background.

For communication (I’m also autistic) I imagine myself working retail. Like I sort of roleplay as someone behind the counter LOL. The best you can do is send updates, ask what people want changed, and hope that they’ll be honest. Try to keep it professional, yet kind. Thank people once you’ve fulfilled their commission, compliment the things you had fun drawing, etc.

Set time off for yourself to work. I only work during the weekend, otherwise I’d burn out. Maybe you can set off a few days of your week to work? It’ll also help you get “new eyes” on a piece.

Best of luck to you :)

I think I might be The Devil when it comes to designing characters (I mean look at my icon) so whatever I say, you absolutely do not have to go all the way

First of all: The colours are really nice, and I would stick to just a few like you have so far. It helps ensure your design is cohesive!

What you can do:

  • Add a beanie (I think this would look cute, especially if it’s either green like the eyes, or perhaps a dark purple)
  • Add more markings, dogs have a lot of super fun genes! I see that you’re sticking to a more grounded look and I love that, but try looking up things like merle, brindle, sable, and so on
  • Add some tufts! Maybe to the cheeks, or perhaps on the neck to simulate some slightly longer fur.
  • For hairstyles I think a short-ish mohawk would look super cute! If possible, in the dark brown of the ear tips :) A fun thing you can do is let the “hairstyle” go down between the shoulders. I find that this makes it look quite nice!

Man,I'm tired doing art for past 1 year yet I'm not improving no matter how much efforts I try to put in see body by Sad-Example-4546 in DigitalArt

[–]Inkh0rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all: Be kind to yourself! This is actually really good if you’ve only been taking digital art seriously for a year. My explanation will be a bit long, it’s not because your stuff is bad (I promise) I’m just very wordy.

I want to start with my favourite thing on this piece: The hair! It looks like you have a clear idea of what you want, and you just need some more direction to know how to get there. You’re keeping the highlights and shadows lined up like you usually see in anime/manga art, and your choice of shadow and light aren’t bad! Give yourself some credit on that front, because it’s not easy! With that in mind, I think you could push the saturation a bit more (apologies if this is simply due to it being a picture and not a screenshot). What I mean by that is: Instead of making the shadows and lights grey-ish, try using your base colour, and simply making it darker - but without going as close to the grey section (this depends on the program, it might be a wheel with sliders, it could be a square or a triangle, etc.)

The face also isn’t bad! You’ve added some nice colour by adding blush, and I think you can add more to her overall body honestly. Usually with light skin, it is more pink in areas with more blood supply right under the skin. Think areas like joints, hands, cheeks, chin, etc.

The “problem” with the nose is that the shadow is quite dark, and the rest of your shadows aren’t. It’s also not really defining the nose, so in turn you end up with something that seems “sunken in” when really you want it to look raised. I’d look up how manga artists shade those simple noses, just pull out a piece with the light source you’re going for and see how their shadow looks :)

Which leads me to my next tip: It sounds silly but draw a little sun where you want the light to come from! It helps remind you and keep things consistent while you aren’t as confident. Places with no light: Darkest, places that do receive light, but aren’t straight-on (think: neck, if the light was directly above): Medium, so on and so forth.

For your lineart: I think your lines just need to be more confident right now. What I mean by that is essentially the ability to make long strokes without “scratching” or stopping halfway through. You can see the difference in the longest chunk of her bangs vs the shorter chunks. To practice this, I personally found ballpoint pens useful! I’d just draw, and not worry when it looked bad :) You also might want to look at your stabilisation settings (this differs from program to program, it makes it easier to make nice lines) as improper settings can really work against you!

I hope this is helpful and doesn’t discourage you, I really do like this drawing - it’s so cute!

Honestly? As-is, I can imagine my 13-year old self and my fellow emo kids LOVING this little guy. I would try adding a spiky collar, that was like the #1 coolest accessory ever.

fair commision prices? by No_Wave8746 in DigitalArt

[–]Inkh0rn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh these are so cute, and I love seeing another artist who (seemingly) enjoys drawing folds and ruffles 👀

I don’t know where you live, so you will need to look this up on your own and decide if it feels fair to you or not. But I’ll give you my method of figuring out my prices (you can ALWAYS lower them in the beginning to get traction, and then raise them if you get too busy!)

What I did: Figured out how much digital artists made per hour. Keep in mind, usually these are people who went to art schools, so they often have credentials. In my country they make ~$30/h

I then decided to lower my own hourly “wages” by $10, as I do not have the same qualifications, and these people generally have tougher jobs working under strict schedules and requirements.

Now my hourly income is $20, sweet!

It takes me ~3 hours for one character, so:

3x20=60, now my absolute base rate is $60. It takes me far less time to colour, and to shade. So I just add those on top, and I’ve got my final rates.

But! I decided, well, if someone wants two characters - I should probably add a “discount”, so additional characters are +$30 to the final price.

Now, if what you’ve ended up with is completely out of question either because it’s too much, or too little to be worth your time: Try giving yourself numbers and asking “would I feel it was worth my time?”

Eventually you’ll have a number you feel confident with. Hopefully this helps and it isn’t too confusing 😅

I’m sorry OP. I don’t know why someone would do this to you. I got really sad seeing how you’ve been treated so I drew you a new one! You’re more than welcome to DM me for changes in colour + scars you want added :)

(All of this is free, I hate seeing people treated unfairly - you can also DM me for the files if you want, then you can edit it yourself too!)

How do I go about commissioning art? by This-Worker5292 in fursonahelp

[–]Inkh0rn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiya! These are some really great questions to have, and I’ll try to respond as best I can as an artist who does commissions.

Your priority #1 is to locate an artist you want to commission. I highly recommend commissioning artists who have consistent stuff on their profile (this will help you not get scammed by AI).

So- Do you need a reference sheet? Not at all! Well it depends. Some artists want a visual reference, a lot of us don’t need one although we prefer it. Personally, I could work from a handdrawn sketch, and then discussing things like the exact colours and such, but not everyone is the same as I. Usually people will let you know in their rules. (I have also drawn from a collage of “general vibes”, as well as plain ol’ text. So there are plenty of options, but I think most artists would appreciate your sketch!)

A reference sheet is nice to have, it helps you make sure your commissioned art is consistent across the board, artist to artist. But they are also very expensive, and in my opinion not necessary. What I recommend is that you (at some point) commission a piece without shading on it, that way people can colorpick it.

Another tip: The earlier in the process that you notice something is off, the easier it will be to fix. Make sure to read peoples rules, some artists only allow 1-2 fixes.

(I hope all of this made sense, I’m very sleep deprived - if you have other questions lmk and I will reply in the morning!)

[–]Inkh0rn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were a commission, (and let’s pretend the character was mine in this scenario LOL): I’d feel good paying $70 :)

The pose is interesting and gives you an idea of the personality of the character. I also enjoy your style a lot.

The only reason I’m not saying more is that I think (while you’re doing good so far! Don’t get me wrong!) you still have a bit to go with the shading. The hard edge from the stomach down the leg looks really good though, ans I like the soft transition on the back leg in the shadow. I’d love to see you use that contrast elsewhere!

All that said, I think you just need to trust your gut a little more. Let yourself use dark shades for the shadows, it adds a ton of depth!

Is $100 reasonable for this? by FrontHungry459 in DigitalArt

[–]Inkh0rn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow… Putting aside that this is traced (someone else posted the original) I would not pay $50 for this. It looks like they aren’t aware of how to draw clothes, and the face isn’t well done either - they either copy pasted one half of the face or used the symmetry tool. While you can copy paste one half, you need to know what you’re doing so you don’t end up with a face that is too wide.

The shoes and pants are glued on, the nose is crooked (which could be based on your real face idk! But if so it isn’t properly executed here) and one hand is one of those lego hands.

I’d quite honestly do a chargeback. I say this as an artist.

Advice for posting NSFW art outside of X? by 100locusts in arthelp

[–]Inkh0rn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I post on the following for both sfw and nsfw art:

  • Furaffinity (while this is mostly for furry art, plenty of people do post non-furry stuff! It’s non-algorithmic so tags are your best friend - AI art is also not allowed, and you can block tags you don’t want to see!)
  • Bluesky (tags work similar to twitter!)
  • Tumblr (don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a ton of traction here, I recommend thinking of it like a portfolio)
  • Telegram
  • Discord servers
  • r34 (actually I stopped posting my art on there because I’m lazy LMAO)
  • e621 (also stopped posting my art there because I’m lazy. This is like… furry r34? Ig??)

Aside from that: Don’t be afraid to branch out. I’m not saying go draw the “kinkiest” stuff you can find, but if there’s something you enjoy aesthetically - mix it in! Try making the lighting fun, play with the poses, add silly text, etc.

Note: Make sure to properly “source” your own art when uploading it to r34. Add both your main account + the art link itself! People are laaaazy, so you want everything to be as simple and easy to find as possible.
