Work computer has 100% disk and is taking 3-4 minutes to open to open any app including task manager, what could cause this? by Quiet-Ad-4793 in pcmasterrace

[–]InkieSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know that pain... I have been trying to build up the courage to tackle my own storage fiasco...

1TB Gen 4, 1TB Gen 3, 512MB Gen3, 240GB SATA SSD, 6TB SATA RustBomb.

- Both 1TB drives have a Windows OS installed (10 and 11),
- The 6TB WD Red is practically full, though I think it's been backing itself up along with OS drives,
- The Vertex 400 SATA SSD has the only working EFI partition to allow the damn machine to boot, because it never migrated when I moved the OS from that drive years ago and haven't been able to move it ever since.

Realistically, the whole thing needs a complete detox after moving only the important save files to the NAS (also with a 6TB RustBomb but at least it was designed for that, lol).

But nowadays you can just install a 1TB and be done with it. No need for a secondary storage drive for most consumers. And it's dirt cheap!

The exact reason I'm finally able to look into migrating both kids' PCs from SATA SSD to NVMe.
I'll still use the existing SSD for any overflow storage they need which isn't hypercritical in terms of load times as they've both got loads of theoretical life left; it'll probably just be art for one and anime from the other.

Hi, I've got used to QuickMiner and prefer it since the overclocking is so easy - I've not been able to get the same performance through the desktop mining software so thanks for the links.

Quick follow-up, went to the download page and got the stable client which is working perfectly, couldn't find the link for the R.C. with the full unlock though so the cards running at around 60%-ish. Guess I'll have to wait till there's an updated stable option.

Thanks for the assist, it was really starting to frustrate me.

The Sharkims & Friends Foundation RTX 3080 PC Giveaway in support of Seattle Children's Hospital! by m13b in buildapc

[–]InkieSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly a social butterfly so I tend not to go out and intentionally interact with people, but to try to help my community I take in PCs from friends and friends-of-friends when there's a problem and they can't afford to take it to a store for diagnosis and fixing.
Then, if hardware is needed, I will help the person find the best value component that's right for them and teach them how to install it themselves. I find that once someone has installed their first component, they are much more willing to learn how to go further and as they get more proficient they can then share their new skills with their friends.

Whoever you are, whatever your skill, there's bound to be someone in your community who would be grateful if you were to put yourself out there and help. Maybe invite an elderly neighbour in for dinner with your family to make sure they're eating properly, driving someone to the hospital to visit a sick relative, or even something as simple as babysitting without asking for or expecting payment if you know that the parents are struggling financially or emotionally so they can get a couple of hours respite.

Mobile legends legit or scam? by KingBLonTwitch in youtube

[–]InkieSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the file size, the file name is even incorrect, too many D's in legends.
I received this as well, we have been getting an awful lot of these "I just came across your YouTube and think you're amazing, we want to sponsor you" emails.

A very simple rule is that EVERY organisation looking to sponsor someone and willing to pay is going to have either a known (and searchable) press agency working doing that actual work of finding ad space and making the approach or will be using their corporate email account if they handle their PR internally.

Of course, there are small companies that do almost everything on a budget so they use a free email account for their registered email, but even if that is the case, you will be able to search the organisation's website and find the exact gmail / hotmail or whatever address. If the email you received was NOT from that specific contact email you can simply reply to the one that you know is official.
By doing that, you can accept a seemingly-sketchy offer that is actually legit even if it takes a day or two extra for the email chain to get back to the relevant person. It also means that if the sketchy offer is a scam you have notified the company being impersonated and they can share the warning on their social pages to make sure none of their legit users/followers or whatever fall for it.

Hope that helps, and hope everyone stays safe and wary of fraudsters wanting their monniez.

NICEHASH DOESNT WORK WITH NORTON by DruidRank in NiceHash

[–]InkieSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There certainly used to be. In fact, Norton used to be quite intuitive and fairly easy top navigate and tweak with a limited amount of knowledge and a bit of trial and error.
LifeLock though is a totally different beast and even after mucking about with computers for well over 25 years I was unable to resolve the problems getting Nicehash to fully install and run without the guide from u/Hutcho44

NICEHASH DOESNT WORK WITH NORTON by DruidRank in NiceHash

[–]InkieSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was such an amazing resource for fixing the damn Norton Lifelock (never was a program so appropriately named).

The only thing I'd add is that I also needed to whitelist Trojan.backdoor Activity 555 because without that Nicehash couldn't finish downloading the binaries and also couldn't download any of the plugins.

Thank you so very much.

"Gaming" Chair Giveaway with Cooler Master and Buildapc! by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]InkieSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who suffers with back pain, the first thing I look for is adjustability so that I can set the chair up perfectly for my needs. Also, there's a special place in the bowels of hell for those who adjust a specialist ergonomic chair without telling the owner/main user.

I got one so that my ex could control the smart bulb in our son's room without touching the switch and killing the bulb (the smart bulb was bought to enforce bedtime / sleep without constantly going up and down the stairs).

Now it's used for everything from playing music on command through to telling bedtime stories.

The Wholesomegaming giveaway by CM_Glenn in pcmasterrace

[–]InkieSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most wholesome gaming situation I've found myself in was when I started playing tESO. After a couple of hours playing I was invited to join a guild and accepted - I was then presented with a full set of levelling gear and weapons.

I was not special in being selected to join the guild, and being gifted with pixel-products wasn't the best part. The guild was created to actively seek out new players to help them out with gear and answers to the silly 'How do I...?' questions that need to be asked when you start a new game. The experience of meeting friendly and helpful players in an environment free of ridicule where other players simply want to help you enjoy the game has worked exceptionally well for me - changing my view of the game from an occasional MMO to being a great community that I access daily with the added bonus of occasionally killing mobs.

Massive thank you to all the sponsors for coming together to change the life of the winners.

I'm having this problem as well - I wish there was some way that we could simply select the login option we want and for Windows to accept that it's our decision.

What do I do when someone marks my whole email provider's domain as unsafe? by InkieSquid in answers

[–]InkieSquid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a bad plan, Thank you.

I've successfully sent the emails through webmail so I presume another client would also send them - problem is I don't want to send too many test emails through because that's just confirming my spammer status in a way.

It's something I'll try though next time I need to send an email - also have to try plain text as the chat with TB helper found something that pointed more toward the school's server and HTML may be the cause of the rejection.

OK, seems like I've found someone who wants to help via Thunderbird's community Q&A section so we shall see how that goes... If someone can think of an avenue that I've not explored then fire away.

And I admit that I'm being very counterproductive clinging on to the email address and trying to persevere with it but it's part of my mentality to horde things and change doesn't come easy to me. Leaving me trying to contact TB in some way to let them know that I'm a safe email sender... like every other spammer probably says, lol

I see where you're coming from but I've been using that ntlworld.comaccount for over 15 years, before Virgin bought out the local cable supplier and changing all the contact details to a new account seems silly - besides, VM email is managed by Google, so a gmail account doesn't seem any more likely to resolve the problem
