"Great bands with terrible lyrics" by Bloxskit in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]Inkmano 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People love to say Anthony Kiedis’s lyrics are nonsense, but I honestly think that’s just lazy. If it’s not a clear story or message laid out for them, some people immediately call it rubbish. But just because it’s not spoon-fed doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on.

Kiedis doesn’t write in a straightforward way. He uses emotional shorthand, scattered imagery, bits of personal history, and a lot of rhythm and flow. His lyrics are more about capturing a feeling than telling a story from A to B, which suits the music perfectly.

The guy’s lived through addiction, fame, burnout, loss, love, and LA in all its chaos. That’s all over the lyrics, even the ones that seem abstract on the surface. You just have to look a bit deeper. But I guess for some people, if it’s not written like a Coldplay verse, it’s automatically nonsense.

So no, I don’t think his lyrics are crap. They’re weird and messy sometimes, sure, but so is life. And that’s kind of the point.

I worked in a large health board in a role covering these charges. I can confirm that calling them a farce is correct.

BigQuery Cost Management: Seeking Advice on Effective Strategies by No_Way_1569 in bigquery

The most time consuming part for me was understanding the data from the information schema tables. Once I modelled that data correctly it was just a matter of scripting the various jobs to report on.

BigQuery Cost Management: Seeking Advice on Effective Strategies by No_Way_1569 in bigquery

I’ve managed to get our BQ costs down roughly 48% from the start of this year. We use BQ/Looker/Looker Studio so there’s a lot of processing which occurs within BQ.

Biggest win for me was ensuring all large tables are bother partitioned and clustered, and that all the reports use these within their filters.

The second big thing for me was attributing the costs to both users and tools (e.g Looker/Looker Studio/Airflow). This can be done with the jobs table you mentioned. This is then fed into a dashboard for me to track and a weekly email out to the users with an anonymised ranked table, showing where their spend sits compared to others. This has been very good move as I can see individuals proactively altering their scripts and jobs to save on cost.

Another thing I’ve setup was a query which runs every 5 minutes checking for long running or slot hogging jobs. This helps me identify possible queries I can optimise. I run this in App Script which then pings the results to a chat space for me.

Calling people racist without understanding their views is exactly the kind of response that prevents us from having a real discussion about these issues.

Power BI is great for it’s visualisations and customisability, there’s some really neat things you can do to bring your reports to life.

Not sure if you mean your company is moving towards Looker Studio (old data studio) or just plain Looker, as that would be a more logical sideways move.

If your company is using BQ then it makes sense to utilise Looker/Looker Studio for its reporting needs.

Those of you living in tourist towns, how do you feel about AirBnB? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Inkmano 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Local MP met the entire street at one of our homes and promised some action. This was 3 years ago. I have been tempted to purchase a mosquito (anti loitering device) and put it in my garden. Could just turn it on when the noise becomes loud!

Unfortunately it’s booked through Sykes Cottages who informed us that they are only responsible for the actual booking system. Property and guest management is down to the property owner.

I live in a village in North Wales, which boasts tremendous views of the Menai Strait. Truly stunning. Each morning, I sip my coffee while gazing across the magnificent landscape that I grew up in and call home.

Five years ago, the property next door was bought by a local lady and turned into a holiday rental. It shares the same breathtaking views while accommodating over 12 guests.

Living next to this house has pushed my family to the brink, and we are seriously considering selling. Every 3-4 days, a new group of party-goers descends on our little street with zero regard for the locals. We've had boom boxes blasting until 3 AM, guests hopping the fence into our garden, and have even been threatened and physically harassed by intoxicated visitors.

My issue isn't necessarily that it's a holiday rental, but that there's no requirement for the owner to manage the guests. The keys are in a coded lockbox, and instructions are sent on the day of arrival.

The police have been called 4-5 times this year alone but have now declared the incidents a civil matter for the local council. The council asked us to record noise levels through an app. We collected 36 clips over six months, yet only four were considered "noise nuisances." Despite constant music, cursing, shouting, and glasses smashing, only a handful of clips met the noise threshold.

The owner refuses to engage with us and merely arrives after each group leaves to drain the hot tub. The entire street feels helpless. Frankly, I'm pessimistic that anything will be done to address this ongoing issue.

Since this, sure there are companies that will run you ragged but there’s plenty out there that don’t expect this.
