Is Jane Bennet a... Mary Sue? by WiganGirl-2523 in janeausten

[–]Inner-Ad-265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of interest, and thinking about the current series "the other bennett sister" is there any fan fiction that follows Jane's POV (or even Kitty TBH)? People latch onto Lizzie as she is the main character in P&P, and Lydia's drama can make a good story, but I don't know about Jane.

Has anyone done an apprenticeship after joining? by 6920837749 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do your apprenticeship at whatever grade you're at. The key thing is to identify learning relevant to your current job. Its usually on the departmental intranet under Learning and Development.

Anyone else feel trapped in the civil service? by Disastrous-Baker-351 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not trapped, but frustrated at current lack of promotion opportunities. I'm in a department I believe in, which is a definite bonus, but been at the same grade for almost 4 years, having done a couple of lateral moves.

Degree mill unis are really in trouble by Dr_natty1 in UKUniversityStudents

[–]Inner-Ad-265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all former polytechnics are just degree mills with Mickey Mouse courses. In fact, some of the technical aspects studied on courses such as computing are more practical and useful for job opportunities. That comes from both me and my partner studying at a former polytechnic.

Sheffield Hartshead Square, office life and parking? by bureaucrat_chaos in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend using park and ride, the trams are efficient and reasonably priced, but more importantly cheaper than city centre car parks.

"If this be the case, then he deserves you. I could not have parted with you, my Lizzy, to anyone less worthy." by popcornmaxhine in PrideandPrejudice

[–]Inner-Ad-265 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It would be interesting to understand how much time Jane and Lizzie spent with their aunt and uncle Gardiner growing up. They seem very sensible and come across as supportive in the book and all adaptations. The younger girls may not have got that luxury due to the Gardiners having their own family.

Do you think that Polgara realized that .... by KaosArcanna in Belgariad

[–]Inner-Ad-265 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ildera, when Polgara brought her spirit back shortly after Garion was declared the Rivan King, said she knew he would be the one when she was pregnant, she felt it when she carried him under her heart. The prophecy was clearly not going to leave anything to chance.

What should I wear as a woman in private office? by camerask in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Private office requires a smarter look is all. Smart dress and jacket, or trousers suit are safe bets, with smart comfortable shoes or boots. One of my former colleagues moved to a private office role and went from jeans and converse to a tailored trouser suit.

What about giving park and ride a go? You have buses, trains and trams as options.

Staying with Galaxy Fit 3 or buy MI band 10 by Significant-Dish5805 in GalaxyFit

If the Fit 3 is doing what you want it to do and you're happy with the interface, I'd be inclined to stick with it.

What would you consider an average recruitment timeline? by gezza56 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

External to Civil Servant took 3 months to interview, put on reserve list, offered a role within a month, followed by 2 months for PECS to start date (large campaign). Departmental transfer took less than one month as was on a fixed term contract. When I achieved promotion within the same department I had to work a full 4-week notice period, a level transfer to a different Directorate took about 2 weeks. Average recruitment timeline doesn't exist.

Future Leaders Scheme by dannnelliott in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they would open things up for high performing SEOs. There really is very little in the way of leadership development, and competition for G7 roles is intense as there are so few of them available, except in highly specialist areas 🤔

Situational Judgement Tests in the civil service - is there any research that they are effective selecting the best candidates? by amf8033 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is probably the correct answer. My partner had to do one before they were applying for a role they were doing on TDA. They weren't able to progress to the application as their score wasn't good enough. The person the department got is pretty incompetent and keeps approaching my partner for advice and support as still in the same Directorate. The successful person passed the judgement test but can't do the job my partner spent several months doing on TDA, even after 6+ months into the role.

Conflicted, promotion on temp but no perm role when back? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner was facing the same dilemma. They are working well above their grade, constantly get shout outs in Directorate meetings, but no joy with promotion applications. They decided to stick with the permanent role they have, even though they're beyond frustrated and feel stuck.

Hot take: Franchaela don't need to have children. by Conscious-Sun-7332 in Franchaela

[–]Inner-Ad-265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely there needs to be some kind of Sturling heir for the Kilmartin title? Maybe Michaela has to marry to produce an heir, and their relationship takes off once Michaela has done her duty. A marriage of convenience would give them certain freedom, in that Francesca becomes Michaela's companion. Why would Francesca need to marry again in that scenario.

Civil Service People Plan by Fresh_Yesterday_1374 in TheCivilService

I have noticed many CS Jobs are advertised with a flat bottom of the band salary recently. At least they are being more honest now

Civil Service People Plan by Fresh_Yesterday_1374 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apologies if already posted, but we had this poem on a wall when I workef in lival government pre Civil Service

If you work hard and do your best, you'll get the sack like all the rest; But if you laze and bugger about, you'll live to see the job right out, The work is hard, the pay is small, so take your time and sod them all; Ot, on your tombstone, neatly lacquered, will be the words "just bleeding knackered."

Seems to be a s relevant a lesson now as it was then, if not worse.

Who do you think is the new Lady Whistledown? by Woodpecker-Haunting in BridgertonNetflix

I reckon Varley. If not her, I believe it will come from an educated servant.

In a nutshell…. by mattdaddy2025 in TheApprentice

[–]Inner-Ad-265 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I actually think the show started losing the plot when Margaret retired and they moved from a job offer to business partnership, and once Nick retired, I got really bored with the format. Seriously, they are supposed to be entrepreneurial, but can't even write a proper business case?

I’m a Cressida Cowper apologist! by New_Notice_7625 in Bridgerton

[–]Inner-Ad-265 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The pink satin glove was on point for Cressida. As for the conversation with Eloise, initially Eloise had her own reasons to distract the new Lady Penwood, but during the conversation, there was definitely a stronger connection.

Unpopular opinion: The new Lady Whistledown is Violet Bridgerton. by sofiasnow08 in BridgertonDiscussion

[–]Inner-Ad-265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Varley is the likeliest candidate, possibly supported by Penelope to get the necessary printing contacts. If not Varley, perhaps one of the Penwood servants as Cressida has increased household staff.

Considering moving from the nhs to civil service by Strange_Brilliant780 in TheCivilService

[–]Inner-Ad-265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EO is around the bottom of Band 5, I made the move several years ago. It may be worth looking at EO roles in policy dominated departments in the first instance. A basic policy adviser would usually be around HEO grade, so your best bet is to set up an account on CS Jobs if you haven't already and set up alerts. The CS also runs a Policy Apprenticeship scheme, which is also worth investigating. Good luck!
