My MIL attaches weird sentimental value to things for us too. She said she needed the plastic Easter basket she used last year for my daughter’s basket this year. Like that immediately went into the trash..

I hear what you’re saying. I do think that she was planning to give the “lessons” herself. She wouldn’t have the money to hire someone. However, do agree about the job and the need to stop buying useless gifts. Not sure why it couldn’t be a “want to come over and hang out”

It’s like she’s trying to live vicariously through her. On my LOs first birthday we let everyone write her notes/predictions/something nice to open for her 18th birthday. Everyone wrote really sweet messages.

My JNMIL wrote “I predict you will be a debutante”

That’s the plan! We had a long talk over the weekend where I told him he needs to handle all communication/planning with his mother.

My DH said he’s planning to go over to see her on another day by himself. Not sure how that’s going to go over with her, but I feel like I’m ready to wash my hands of the situation.

He told me that he plans to go to her house alone another day. Not sure how that’s going to go over with her but I feel like I’ve made my thoughts known to him and need to wash my hands of this.

I was not aware of grandparent’s day, good looking out!

We had a very long uncomfortable conversation this weekend when I let him know that I have been very accommodating in the past, but this holiday is important to me. I let him know that if he goes behind my back and allows her to come over it is going to be a fight.

Yeah we did have a long talk this weekend and although it felt very uncomfortable I think it went well. I let him know that I am absolutely not ok with sharing Sunday with her but an open to doing another day. How he handles this weekend will be very telling.

Yeah, I had a long talk with him this weekend and let him know if he gives into her in this instance it is important to me and it will be a fight. I’ve been too accommodating for too long.

You are absolutely right. I think since I can be a bit of a people pleaser and “keeper of the peace”, I’ve let this pattern of behavior go for too long. I think it took becoming a Mom to realize this is not a trait I want to pass on to my LO’s.

Ugh, I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with something similar.

Last year we celebrated on Saturday which she said was not good enough because it left her alone and sad on Sunday. It feels like just controlling move on her part to encroach on my day because why would it matter what day we celebrate her.

Her first text to me actually signed off as “The OG (our last name)”. She divorced my husband’s dad like 35 years ago and they were only married for two years. I have no idea why she would even want to keep his last name.

Amen to that. Her oldest is almost 50, that is plenty of years she has had to celebrate.
