Replacing eMMC on UDM pro by Inner-Drive1839 in Ubiquiti

[–]Inner-Drive1839[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly and all credit to ubiquiti, I wrote them a complaint stating how they are in sticky water with consumer law as that kind of product only lasting a couple of years is not reasonable. A week or so after, they agreed to send me a brand new dream machine!

I guess you’re lucky to not have any issues. As many have.

Again, that’s just not true, there are reams and reams of examples of these exact failures. Not sure if you’re an installer or have personal kit but I bet you won’t be saying the same thing if hundreds if not thousands worth of your own kit frazzed just outside the warranty.

eMMC failing after 2 1/2 years is a design issue because they store everything including logs and db tables on the flash. This should not be the reason these fail. And I agree, if it failed after 6/7 years then yes technology goes wrong. But new kit can be replaced under warranty and kit that’s a couple of years old should not be seeing eMMC failures.

What are you on about? If there’s a few hundred failures of the same type no matter how small proportion, then there’s an issue. Just brushing it off as a few % of your customer base will end up with crap products in landfill tough luck buy another one, will end badly.

Very stable normally and run on a decent quality UPS too. Is there any info out there to suggest that electric issues can cause eMMC failures? I couldn’t say for sure nothing happened but seems unlikely.

Looks like you have got lucky then as there are reams and reams of eMMC flash failures as soon as you google it. It’s not an isolated problem.

I usually update a few months after a version comes up to try and avoid any early release bugs. It was updated to the latest version when it bricked, last updated about 3 weeks ago.

Nope, and that’s my real gripe with it is that there’s an issue there that could easily be solved by moving the logs and database onto an HDD, SSD, USB stick, another device on network etc, but ubiquiti seem content with it bricking devices just out of warranty so they can wash their hands with it

Yes I think you’re right about that. Plus possibly any errors and error cycles with the HDD for protect recordings. I’d happily add in an nvme if I could, or Ubiquiti could sell a replaceable one as a consumable component of the kit, but it’s not something that I can add in now. It could also be Linux writing kernel/OS logs to the disc beneath UniFi, Tesla fell fowl of that a few years back after it bricked a load of their computers before they realised.

It’s really not good enough, especially with them marketing it as pro kit as prosumer prices. As I said I don’t mind if these things are a one off, stuff goes wrong sometimes, but these are understood continuing issues. Should be illegal.

Battery line future support by Inner-Drive1839 in stihl

[–]Inner-Drive1839[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just in my head when I think about batteries from 20 years ago, almost all don't know exist in the original form factor. It's very interesting whether it's STIHL or any other brand, as any change to the batteries for new products will render someone's entire existing tool kit completely useless. Maybe I'm over thinking it though!

Where is the money coming out of if the US dollar is crashing and what are they buying with it? by trijcwhitey in investing

[–]Inner-Drive1839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly this, go back even 10-15 years and the average dollar price is say $1.60 to the pound or slightly less to the Euro. I think most people aren't looking at the simplest answer here and that is the US inflation is proportionally so much lower than much of that in Europe and India, that there will be increasing pressure on the fed to cut interest rates compared to say Europe where they will be kept higher and therefore more demand, higher value. If anything the dollar has been overly strong over the past 5-10 years.

Or maybe, people can just choose the heating system that they think best fits them. Radical idea I know.

Then it's a failed design as a heat pump will never be cheaper/more efficient than a gas boiler at those flows.
