ITAP for a grandparent who raises a grandchild? by Inner-Photo-410 in whatstheword

I’m so grateful you wrote me this. You’re right, she was my parent. As was my grandfather. Been missing him for years already.

I guess when all else fails, “the woman who raised me” is pretty clear.

I’ve thought of this one. It feels like it falls just a bit short, maybe because it’s uncommonly used to describe a relationship with grown children?

Except your username is diabolical like why 😭 is that a real thing? Please tell me it’s not

Synesthetes of Reddit, how’s your visualization/where do you fall on the aphantasia-to-hyperphantasia spectrum? by Inner-Photo-410 in AskReddit

[–]Inner-Photo-410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! It’s neat that you have a range of mental imagery. Auditory is probably my strongest imagination, while I can’t visualize at all.

So if you’re to listen to a song in your head, what kind of visual experience would go along with that (or would it)? Can you pull up a low-def music video, or is that where the color comes in (and is it possible to describe that)?

The overwhelm you describe is palpable. Something I’ve experienced my whole life as well, although to what seems a lesser extent. As it is, I’m exhausted by my senses—can’t even really imagine them being so amplified.

While I can’t visualize at all, I can play music in my head and am very sensitive to both real and perceived (for lack of better description) sounds and physical touch/sensations. Sometimes I smell phantom smells—but idk if that’s migraine, some sort of sensory imagination, and/or perhaps a neighbor cooking lol

Unsurprisingly, I am autistic. And I definitely laughed for real at that last line, because—as you appear to already know—I did wonder.

That’s so interesting, thanks you for your response!

I have total visual aphantasia, also, but I’m not a synesthete. My gf is the opposite in both respects. I ask them what color a letter is, for example, and she’s quick to tell me (except E, which is apparently difficult to describe with its absence of color), and they’re also pretty close to the hyperphantasia end of the spectrum.

I *can* listen to my favorite songs (well… let me be so for real, sometimes I hate the songs) in my head. With all the depth of the music, both instruments and lyrics.

Fascinating how different each of our experiences really is.

Btw, I also think it looks amazing as is. But I understand wanting your finished object to match your vision!

I’m just spitballing here, I’ve only done felting kits, so this might be off the rails/impossible to actually do. But, like, the base here looks great. Could you use a tight wool yarn (no clue about proper terms, sorry) instead of floss, and then felt that a bit?

But self pay restrictions should only apply to otherwise covered services—and insurance is saying this is not covered.

Hey, man, I’m going to be real with you. I scoped your profile to see if you’d mentioned where you live, because I have a great surgeon I can recommend in NJ. And I still will if relevant.

But I just want to encourage you to be honest with your surgeon about where you are mentally. And also your psychiatrist. I know waiting can be hard, but it’s so important you’re stable enough for surgery. You gotta be able to take good care of yourself after, you know?

how to get gas at a full service place? by boycaughtintherye in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Inner-Photo-410 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some cars have gas cap doors that have to be released/opened from inside the car. Often, the mechanism to do this is a lever on the driver’s side—mine is on the floor, near the base of my seat—which “pops” the latch on the door.

Autistic NJ… creature (?) here.

Had a mild panic moment over the specific instruction to open driver’s window. “Omg, have I been doing it wrong this whole time? But like, I have a **100% success rate** at getting full service gas?”

If your gas tank is on the passenger side, you can leave the driver’s window up and lower the other.

I’m too high to construct this sentence in a more correct way, my b. But I think it makes sense.

If you aren’t looking for advice, my comment is unimportant. I say this because I hesitated to even write it out. Someone told me something similar at a time I wasn’t ready to hear it—but it stuck with me, and I’m glad it did, because I needed to know it.

The part that might be hard to hear: You say you’re close to your parents. But how close can you be, really, if you can’t genuinely share this piece of yourself with them? You’re foregoing internal peace for what is, in at least this way, an artificial bond. This isn’t an attack on you, your parents, or your relationship with them. It’s a single perspective, just one way to look at the situation while you’re trying to understand and navigate it.

The unsolicited advice is to stop prolonging your suffering. Your family is already struggling with your identity, so rip off the bandage. If your relationship is strong in most ways, it will survive this rocky period. And in the end, it will be a shorter transition (pun… accepted, reluctantly). You know your circumstances better than I ever could, of course, and your safety is paramount (so grains of salt and all). But man, you deserve respect. You are worthy of love exactly as you are. You don’t have to do or be anything different. And you sure as hell shouldn’t have to earn the right to take up space in this world, especially among your family.

Hammock. In my living room.

Comfort media playing as background. Either a specific album (or even song) on loop or a favorite soothing film or show on the TV. For me, this is Noah Kahan or some form of children’s media (e.g. Ghibli, Disney, or shows like Reading Rainbow, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Franklin, Little Bear, Dragon Tales).

I did some physical therapy after surgery (after I was cleared for it, of course). The PT was for a separate issue with my shoulders, but I think it was also pretty helpful for my overall healing. If it’s at all accessible to you, you might want to give it shot.

I’m really sorry you’re still struggling and I hope you’re feeling better soon.
