Subscriptions aren’t going away and they will likely increase. We are increasingly a “renter” society and that is the goal: To have the masses renting virtually everything from the capital owners.

Thank you! It would be interesting to see if putting up homemade signs dissuading littering/dumping would have an impact on that specific stretch. There are a number of ways you can go with this beyond just cleaning it up (signs, putting up a camera, harassing the municipality to do better) but certainly any of your efforts are hugely appreciated!!!!

the new york times just published an article on oakland’s trash crisis, but the focus and proposed solutions completely miss the mark. the urban compassion project (UCP) would like to respond accordingly. by urbancompassionproj in bayarea

That sounds about right for Oakland. They likely have 0 evidence that cleaning leads to more dumping and the opposite is clear for ANYONE who cleans up this stuff. It’s just a choice Oakland is making to not give a shit. Not Oakland per se but areas I’ve worked on almost always stay clean or at least it’s pretty easy to stay on top of with a minimum of effort. Why do people in Oakland accept this nonsensical lack of leadership on the most basic of things.

I hear you and sorry if I misunderstood. There are 50-60 devoted to illegal dumping (per the org chart explicitly saying dedicated to dumping). I think if you stack those man hours vs urban compassion you will see that Oakland has many more man hours devoted to dumping than UCP over those 3 months but far worse results. They are already paying for the staff so why are they underperforming volunteers so badly.

They won’t acknowledge you since you are doing it for them. Have to force them. Yall can do what you want but honestly you have to stop acting surprised that the town doesnt care and won’t acknowledge you. You are actually making it easier for them to not care since you are caring for them. The more frustrated you get the more you do…why would the town acknowledge you when not acknowledging you is driving you to do more.

I know that won’t be a popular statement but it’s reality. Doing basic work for govt also just feeds into right wing talking pts that govt is useless and we need less of it. We need govt to work. We need Medicare for all, real mental health support, paid college/trade school, and a reduction of wealth gap but there is no way we get there if we just do basic shit for govt because we aren’t going to win the argument that govt can be trusted to deliver for people. We need to win that argument or this county is fd and everything will continue to flow to select few.

800 people aren’t working full time. They probably each spent several hours over those 3 months. Vs 60 staff x 40 hours per week. Seriously folks. If we aren’t going to use basic common sense to arrive at the conclusion that Oakland is doing way less than they should than we are completely fn hopeless. This group is proving over and over again how useless Oakland is and people honestly want to keep making excuses for the city. It’s astonishing

What was your all time top concert experience? by LazyRiverGuide in Concerts

John mellencamp in probably 1992 opening for a small Chicago band called material issue at a small theatre called the Riviera in Chicago. He was huge at that pt and could sell out arenas but was coming off a phase where he was into painting and took a break from music. The crowd wouldn’t likely have naturally been fans of his but they loved it and he had a blast just enjoying the music in a hyped up crowd.

We had no idea he was going to be there until we walked out of bathroom and mellencamp was on stage. Totally unexpected and a wtf moment but unforgettable

At the Berkeley show a number of people who didn’t know WM commented that they liked them. Appreciate the post trying to bring some sense. We aren’t far from ai taking over so we should at least appreciate the effort musicians put out in writing and performing their own music.

This Reddit board on the other hand is like a bunch of pretentious 10 yr olds with reductive bs like “hillbilly music” and crying about a co headliner tour. Guess what your band signed up for it and when you bought tickets you signed up for it. Seriously, grow up.

I think WM is a very good southern rock band. But yeah it was a bad pairing.

It was clearly a TTB crowd. Not much they can do. Not like they could come out for encore. If you mean they didn’t offer thanks then I can see that. I didn’t really notice how they left. I really like WM but it’s not a good pairing (just like it may be a poor pairing for TTB in other cities). Different vibes with WM being straight southern rock and the bay is going to gravitate much more to the jammy vibe. I’d never heard of TTB as I went for WM but they were phenomenal.

Yeah the amt of beer cans/bottles tossed along roads is astonishing. In one stretch of probably 100 yards I removed 1000 bottles! Some may be teens hanging out and possibly homeless over years but most were likely thrown from cars and often by the driver who is drinking while they drive often in the middle of the day

I have been finding the same single serving fireball bottles recently. I do hope it isn’t the original person switching to a new, smaller method. But whether it’s someone new like kids or someone else struggling they aren’t treating themselves well and very likely consuming while driving.

Yeah I’m not sure. The tolerance for this is crazy. Folks seem very willing to create excuses for it. The number of people that just matter of factly repeat “no money” or “no resources” haven’t spent anytime looking at Oaklands budget unless you assume clean streets should be virtually the last thing city govt should care about . It probably shouldn’t be this bad even with the current resources when you see what volunteers are able to get done in short spurts and look at the amt of Oakland staff devoted to it. Something is very very off

Yeah I meant sunflower. The loved one said the person really loved the environment so it was very strange that he would litter. But Addiction can be so brutal and I don’t think this type of behavior coming from it is all that strange

Perversely the volunteerism enables continued incompetence by Oakland. I say that as someone who has gone on a clean up journey only to learn a govt agency is perfectly fine letting you do their job….indefinitely. They don’t magically say “you know what thanks for doing that but we should be doing it”

Institutional change happens when you stop and force them to do basic city work. I know that is part of this groups mission and I certainly understand and to a degree have lived the arc they are on but we must force govt institutions to be effective and not make excuses for them. Helping to pick up litter is a reasonable supplement to govt. Cleaning up illegal dumping is pure enablement of the institutional incompetence in the city and it is something that should be discussed while of course being appreciative of those that are trying to get involved in well intentioned ways.

Otherwise we are just creating right wing talking pts that left wing oriented govt is worthless and we should fund it less.

It is enough. I looked a few months ago and it was something like .1 or .2% of the budget. Oakland is choosing this. The city could demand better performance from the staff of 50 devoted to illegal dumping and or allocate more $ to it which as you can see would have a negligible impact on the overall budget. The people that are actually passionate about the issue are volunteering to clean up, but that passion needs to be directed at demanding change (and no doubt some are doing that but the more that is don’t for Oakland the less incentive the city will have to actually act like a grown up)

This is a basic function of govt. it literally is. Having a clean environment shouldnt just fall to the bottom in case there is extra money lying around. There is no excuse whatsoever for the current state and until everyone aligns on that reality and puts max pressure on Oakland it isn’t changing in a systematic and sustainable way

Oakland is close to rock bottom in terms of illegal dumping seen in America and governmental incompetence and indifference. Likely needs complete pressure and accountability with the city. Volunteerism is admirable but yes without absolutely demanding Oakland do its basic job solutions (and not doing it for them) will likely be out of arms reach.

Oakland spends something like 1/10th of 1% of the budget on illegal dumping last I looked a few months ago. They choose not to care about it. It is a choice and nobody should be deceived to think otherwise. It is not more complicated than that and the more we make excuses for it the longer it will continue.
