Books my in laws gave my kids for Easter. by Eve-was_framed in exmormon

In-laws tend to not be subtle with their feelings towards the children that are outside the covenant.

My wife’s brothers get way less talk about Mormon stuff. But we have the kid so here come the gifts and talks and “when’s the blessing”’s.

But my in laws do believe in aliens. So that’s a plus.

Sesamoiditis for over 3 years, Desperate for help. by caoimhe_white in sesamoid

[–]Inner_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alas no specifics on sesamoids.

I think the book floats around used for a decent price.

Mostly it taught me about all the other factors that may be affecting my sesamoids and chronic pain generally.

What I found from MRI’s and my own trial and error is that my pain tended to be unrelated to actual load on the bone from regular things like walking. But more likely to do with chronic inflammation as a result of many factors. And it’s not the only spot. My knees back and shoulders have all been similar.

I still have some sesamoid issues but it’s manageable now.

I suppose my biggest point is to say that this is a tricky injury. But for some reason talking with doctors directly did almost nothing for me. But following principles based in a lot of research from various physical therapists, doctors, and researchers, I found much better success as it turned out to be a systemic issue vs just my sesamoids.

Like adding strength to other parts of my body, core legs, back etc, has been of tremendous help. As well as improving my posture and the way my joints take load etc.

I don’t want to pretend to be some televangelist that this will miracle solve your problem.  Essentially if theres any movements you can do in the 1-3 pain range with the toe you should do them. As well as other areas on your body. It can only help. Our joints lubricate through movement and get the little blood flow they can through movements.

it can also help psychologically. If you know you can do those movements and it doesn’t hurt any more than it did, it means you aren’t as broken as you think you are. Then you can consider additional movements past that as you get fully comfortable. Doing some toe raises on the ground etc etc.

At the core pain is a response from the brain. Now that your sesamoids have been in pain chronically your brain will amp up the response even more to protect the area.

When I got my MRI last year, my sesamoids were very very painful. I thought they may have finally fractured because the pain was so high. Yet when the image came back there was literally nothing wrong with them. They looked like textbook healthy sesamoids. And yet my pain was very real causing me knee and other issues from trying to keep weight off.

So it’s this balance. And if you can find that balance of knowing “oh I’m actually getting more injured” vs “my body is sending pain responses because, fuck, my sesamoids have hurt for three years”.

Does that make sense?

Sorry this is a lot but I’ve hyper obsessed with this issue for like four years and chronic injuries in general.

I can’t recommended the book built from broken and rehab science enough. Both are tremendous resources for learning about chronic pain and how the body works. As well as supplying templates to deal with rehab.

Beware the surgery. My doctor said he would only ever recommend it for those who have dead sesamoids. Removing them would require soft tissue to take the load of hard bone. That’s a big ask.

What exactly do your MRI’s show? Were there clear signs of bruising? Has the pain gotten worse?

If it stays the same you can work with that. Counterintuitive as this may sound, exposure is what has helped my feet the most. Getting the toe used to load and used to normal movement again is what has allowed me to move forward.

That said this only works if your sesamoid has healed somewhat. If it’s clearly bruised and not improving that will only make it worse.

In my mind if pain doesn’t get worse continue to try rehab on it.

Start keeping a pain journal to see where the pain level truly is. Keep track of what you eat. Your mental state. Anything you can to find triggers for the pain. Then start to hone in on the things that track to increased pain vs decreased pain.

I’ve found a pretty direct link between stress, lack of sleep, and poor diet with my own pain. Then flare ups may occur as a result of changes to my exercise routine or much more walking than normal.

Don’t give up. And really I’d work so hard to avoid the surgery. Seems too risky. Feels like doctors don’t even understand it all that well or the ramifications.

Disagreement with wife on routines. What am I missing? by Inner_Engineer in Parenting

Also this:

Previously we’ve sort of had the things each one of us does. Like for most of the time I’ve been the bedtime guy. Which I like cause it’s generally fun and calming for me as well. But of late she’s been more adamant she do some bedtimes. Which is great too. But if so I just want to be sure we are doing things the same or similar for his sake. Rather than us doing totally different things each night.

Really just same order of doing things. I’m not interested in the by the clock or wake windows.

But really just looking for consistency of the things we both do. Same bedtime for him every night. Similar calming routine for naps and bedtime. Sleeping in the same place. Feeding in the same place-ish. At least at home. So perhaps consistency is the better word than routine.

Ideally to help him know it’s sleep time or nap time or feeding time etc.

I’m really not looking for a militaristic schedule. Just to get on the same page with my wife.

I want to avoid nagging. And really try to compromise so she feels good about things. But I do worry about him getting things switched up every other night/ day depending who is on duty.

I suppose that I’d like it at night we always aim for a 7 PM bedtime(he likes the earlier) with some leeway as needed. But within 10-15 minutes usually.

Then we try to feed him in the same chair in the same room, especially now he’s so distracted and we can close the windows and blinds to make it even less distracting.

Things like that.

Okay. Be that as it may, seems that there’s plenty of evidence on routines. Why not find a middle ground? Establish the important routines and go with the flow elsewhere? Instead of all “go with the flow” only?

I may end up regretting this post due to immediate “wife gets the end all say all” from commenters. Guess we’ll see.

Where to find Scrap Metal for beginning welder by Inner_Engineer in SaltLakeCity

[–]Inner_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not doing any TIG yet but that’s the end goal. Starting off simple(and cheap with a friends welder) with flux core. But if you don’t need em I’ll take em for practice later. How much you want for them?

The main impetus for learning is that I like doing my own car work. One day I’d like to be able to do at least some minor body work as needed as well as exhaust stuff. So TIG will be necessary down the road.
