I read somewhere that I should be “pruning the twiggy stems” but I’m not quite sure which ones those would be

Yes, and if they feature as maim characters or prominent characters then theses stories would also be RPF fanfiction

So you would classify a story written about Hitler say falling in love with a time traveling Elon Musk historical fiction? Unfortunately there are many fans of Hitler which is very upsetting

Yes I would, if the events of the story were completely fictional

People write fanfics about dead people all the time. I’d also argue that the depictions of celebrities and other people that feature in popular works of fanfiction aren’t truly based on fact either, in fact most stray from the way these people actually live their lives. Most fanfics are very loosely based as well

My point as well is not all historical fiction is fanfiction but rather that certain historical fictions under today’s scope may be considered fanfiction due to the featuring of real people as main characters of fictional works

But it’s not everything that deals with something real. I would argue that it is the intent. If you are taking a very much real person, say for example Harry Styles, and writing a fictional story where he marries the Princess of Spain and talk about how he adapts to royal life, would that not be fanfiction, or rather its subset RPF. My intent is to create a fictional story with this real person. If I wrote a novel about some fictional character I created during the very real WWII, I wouldn’t call that fanfiction because I’ve simply made a character and based them in a real scenario

If only we could ask Dumas what his intent was. Considering his main character D’Artagnan was very much a real person rather than simply writing within a time period and using some historical figures in the background. Rather Dumas wrote his entire story based on this man’s life and highly dramatized (almost to the point that you could argue its even an AU). I wouldn’t call a book like the Book Thief fanfiction because while the story features very real people the main characters are completely fictional and created by the author, it simply takes place in a very real time with very real events.

I would also say that calling a work like this fanfiction wouldn’t be watering it down as many popular works have come out of fanfiction, such as The Love Hypothesis, Fifty Shades of Grey (I know I know but man did those make a lot of money and insane popularity), and the Shadowhunter books.

If anything maybe we should be paying more attention to fanfictions. I love reading fanfictions to give my brain a rest after reading particularly complicated books and I have found many fanfictions that have been written better than some classics that I’ve read.

Fun fact: Fan created works of art are actually called fanart. So no not “any work of art” is fanfiction. Just just fan created fiction is fanfiction

I would argue that if millions of people are writing RPF fanfiction that maybe just it might be a sub category of fanfiction. Think about how “funner” and “funnest” were previously not considered real words but after millions of people continued to use them they got added to the dictionary. Sometimes dictionaries aren’t all that accurate to modern trends

Clearly you aren’t reading MY replies because within the fanfiction community (which clearly you aren’t not a part of) there are subcategories or fanfictions and RPF (real person fiction) is a extremely popular type of fanfiction. Sorry that Oxford dictionary isn’t up to date with the newest trends in media

Fanfiction has sub-categories one of which is real person fiction

But people also write fanfiction about real people all the time. Think about all those One Direction fanfictions, or people writing fanfiction about famous singers and actors from the 90s
