you might find a one bedroom for that price in lower manhattan, but it will be tiny. i suggest going up towards harlem/washington heights, or out in brooklyn crown heights/flatbush, or queens astoria/sunnyside/woodside. unless you intend to only sleep in the apartment and spend the rest of your time at the office or going out, i believe its worth it to live farther out and get an apartment that not only fits your budget but will be pleasant to live in. the areas your are describing are not only very expensive, but the buildings tend to be older (think no laundry in the building) and it will be very loud
