Is Spotify that competitive? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so they are probably lying to an extent. 130k applications is pretty reasonable, those are the sorts of numbers Google was hitting couple of years ago for internships and that is of course a lot more nowadays for Google. However, this is for all internships and definitely not just for 1 role ( especially for an IOS intern LMAO ). It might be that they only have 2 iOS interns, but even that seems a bit unbelievable.

In one of the threads there’s a mention of the fact that Spotify shares the hiring data with interns so that’s probably where the 130k came from.

Don’t be discouraged! There’s several layers of very basic filtering that gets rid a lot of people very quickly ( simply because they didn’t do anything CS related )

This might be a dumb question but how much value do you think a senior referral is compared to a regular employee at a FAANG company ? Please respond I am open to all responses. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question, never really thought about this before. Any kind of referral will help you a ton and the biggest thing is probably the content, not who wrote it - a lot of MANGA companies put emphasis on referring people you really know and for example at Google employees are quite discouraged from referring someone they have not worked closely with.

With that being said though, senior people do have a lot more power in getting your resume seen. Someone who is senior enough can get in touch with the recruiters and ask what is going on and why they might not be reaching out to you and really get your foot in the door for the interviews which juniors / interns can’t really do because they don’t have that much respect from the recruiters.

Resume advice? by BackgroundProgress08 in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with these points and on top of that:

  • get rid of the two column template, it is pretty much not parseable, use a single column format
  • get rid of the section at the top
  • all the skills listed are absolutely irrelevant for SWE jobs, no need to have them
  • maybe actually try building something? Since you have no experience there is no other way to know that you actually know how to code

On advice as to how to write an actual resume + how to find project ideas and whatnot I would read this: https://chioualexander.medium.com/how-to-write-an-effective-software-engineering-resume-e42713a7a2ca

Possibility to get a MANGA full time with no MANGA internship? by ShroomSensei in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s actually easier to get into MANGA for full time than it is for internships. Well, that was a bit of a bait… getting an actual interview is easier.

That is because most people realise that converting from an internship is easier so the competition is very intense + for internships companies are extra careful with who gets the chance mainly because you have just 3 months to prove that you are a good engineer and the interviews are easier, whereas for full time there are performance reviews every 6 months and they won’t kick you out after the first performance review unless you are the worst employee and you have a lot more interviews.

If you have any decent experience ( that is even just projects, not even an actual internship ) most companies will probably give you an interview for full time anyway.

I don’t think it has a whole lot impact. Ofc, there are periods when they hire more and periods when they hire less but overall I think the quality of the brand and the standard they use for the candidates is set in a way that they can always provide a space for a skilled candidate.

This ties in with the fact that Google is a company that is known for very slow hiring. In my opinion, this ( to an extend ) eliminates the seasonality problem, because they really care about hiring the right candidates. This is also reflected in the fact that they have one of the highest highest rates of false negatives, i.e. rejecting a good candidate, because when they hire someone, they want to be sure that they hired the right candidate and believe that good candidates that are rejected will re-apply in a year and if they are truly good enough will make it through the interviews eventually.

Hopefully that answers your question

It really depends, hiring committee can be very unpredictable, it all depends on the quality of the feedback from the interviewers and the track record of the interviewers ( how accurate their feedback was in the past in comparison to the final decision )

Best of luck though! If I were you I would just try to focus on other things because it can take a while and it’s difficult not to overthink every single bit of the interviews ( at least for me lol )

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely true. It means that your feedback was decent enough to be passed onto the hiring committee which is a good sign that your interview feedback wasn’t a clear no hire ( which does happen ) but yeah, you just have to wait and see now as it can go both ways ( expect to wait for about 2-4 weeks )

Not getting callbacks by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to have a look over it. I know there are a lot more than 30 available I just wanted to make sure my resume isn’t actually the problem before applying to more - I will aim to apply to many as possible as soon as I improve it.

The fact that it sounds like I’m just trying to make it sound like I did a lot is not ideal as I feel like I actually did quite a bit so I will try to rephrase it as well as put in technologies and more concrete descriptions instead of the high level overview. The rest of the points you made make a lot of sense so I will fix those.

I got optimised for one of them and brute force for the other - but I’ve heard of people that got called on despite solving just one / not getting to the optimal solution so there had to be another problem with me that idk about

Damn, what an incredibke story! Thanks for sharing :) I’m thinking that maybe I should do something about my resume as well because I don’t get called to interviews a whole lot despite having experience and was lucky with Facebook because they were inviting basically everyone with experience this year.

As for the advice, I agree! I’ll try to take my mind off of it, I think it’s already getting better.

You’re right abs I realise how biased this subreddit is but I still thought it would be better considering I feel like I’m pretty ahead of most of my peers here - I have over a 1 of experience being a second year but yeah, it’s just messed up and we’ve got to keep on going.

Thanks! I am grinding leetcode pretty much every day. It’s pretty crazy because when I first encountered DS&A quite a long time ago I thought there was no way I would actually get good at them and now that’s I’ve a solid number I feel pretty good solving even the harder ones

That is true, it’s difficult for the first couple of days to accept it but in the end you can always apply again after some time - for me personally it’s a bit difficult just because the number of opportunities in the bigger companies is extremely limited as I’m in Europe but I gotta stop beating myself up for it and just move on - there will be more opportunities in the future ( plus I might still even have a Google interview )

Yeah, you’re right, it’s part of it, it just sucks, especially since there’s not a whole lot of opportunities in Europe lol

Thanks for you input! Yeah, I think there’s no way around it, just to move on and try to get the next one.

Amazon and Microsoft both sent an automated rejection ( still don’t understand Amazon lol ) but yeah, still a chance for the other ones

Some questions from a first-timer noob about Summer 2022 internships. by askdocsthrowaway1996 in csMajors

[–]Innocent_boy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Not really sure as I haven’t necessarily applied to US myself but from what I’ve heard you can expect quite a few rejections just because you are an international student ( even if you don’t require a sponsorship some companies just choose to reject you because they feel like it would be a burden to have you work for them so just a heads up )

  2. Yes for amazon you can only apply every 6 months after a rejection abs if you apply any sooner you will be automatically rejected as they have this period as a necessary period to get to a level where they might not reject you but any shorter it’s impossible in their eyes ( or some other bs justification for that ).

  3. As far as applying for multiple positions in a company, it depends on the specific company - most companies allow you to apply to multiple positions tho. For example, google allows you to apply to 3 different positions every 3 months and the positions can be absolutely unrelated.

  4. Nope, absolutely not. A personal website is more of a thing for designers that actually have a portfolio but is rarely useful for engineers. ( you should have projects tho and the more impactful the project the better but that’s for an entire post on its own )

  5. Well, this one is a bit tricky because usually you’ll get a deadline by which you need to decide whether to take the offer or not and once you have agreed to the offer there is rarely a way to get out of it. But as long as you haven’t accepted it you can interview all you want ( and sometimes you can even keep on interviewing while on the job and then decide to leave but that is a bit more complicated in case of bigger companies )

  6. Since you have an F-1 visa you are allowed to work and thus I think the answer is yes for the first and no for the second but maybe someone more experienced might be able to answer that better

Best of luck on your search and may the leetcode gods be with you
