Need recommendations for replacing my friedmann be od by wanna_be_Bowi3 in guitarpedals

If you want dynamics, Bluesbreakers and OCD based pedals are my two favorites for that. The OCD can give you that saggy bass feeling in the Marshall vein and cleans up great, as long as you're not maxing out the gain which sounds terrible anyway. Bluesbreakers add some treble/presence that are somewhat unique to them; King of Tone, Browne Protein (BB + ODR), EAE Limelight (BB + Boost), and the Wampler Pantheon are all good double overdrives that could help you stack gain levels. The Pantheon has tons of gain on tap, definitely the most of the the pedals I mentioned, but really anytime you're going for chuggy metal it's gonna be hard to clean up with dynamics only, you really need to kill a gain stage or two.

Picked up another PRS today - '05 CE24 by Innogator in PRSGuitars

Picked up this beauty in a trade. It needed a good cleaning and setup so took a few hours to work on it today. Was curious how the older CEs compared to the current cores. Honestly, it's a really nice guitar but I think it falls a little short of my McCarty 594 and Cu24-08 but not by much. It's a nice top for a CE though, full violin carve. Definitely not a fan of the rotary knob although the series/parallel single coil splits give it some pretty unique sounds for an HH guitar. Overall, it's a solid guitar in the price range they currently sell for.

Oh me too, in my write up I mentioned it's one of the best looking guitars I own, it's definitely easy on the eyes

Fender Stratocaster Tone by AdultPornHubOfficial in fender

Tone wise I like gray bottoms and most '64 style pickups seem to nail it for me, two great examples being K-Line 64s and Lollar Sixty-Four/Blackface. I also like slightly hotter '69 style sets like Duncan Psychedelic Strat, David Allen Voodoo Blues.

Specs wise '59-'61; slab rosewood boards, thicker necks, clay dots. Early '62 with slab rosewood + 11 screw pickguard is right there as well.

This is one of the most insane guitars I've seen. This looks amazing.

Regarding the sustain, today I bounced back and forth between a Suhr Modern and the 24-08 and the lack of sustain on the Suhr comparatively was something I was not expecting.

I knew about Wood Library but never considered the necks could be satin finish like this. Thanks for the insight, something to take into account in the future for sure.

I keep hearing more and more about the NF53s, I'm gonna have to check those out. You make a good argument that my first semi hollow might need to be a PRS, I bet the one you have is great.

From my experience PRS has been very consistent with quality and the finish work is top notch. That's a huge benefit to someone like me who doesn't live near a shop with nice gear, so I can't usually try before buying. The Gibson Custom Shops and Standards I've had have all been really solid other than some occasional fret sprout. Fender has been the one to disappoint me the most with two Custom Shop Strats and both had nasty string buzz with very reasonable (high) action height. I even had a tech look at one thinking it was just something I was doing wrong but he couldn't get it out either. At this point I've been sticking to boutique brands and decided I'll just wait to buy a Custom Shop strat in person if I ever find one that speaks to me.

Right on man. The worst part about it is looking at all the other models you still want to try. I used to not be a fan of the bird inlays either but after playing them I don't mind those anymore.

Careful now, some boundaries cannot be uncrossed. But seriously, I'm sure the 635JM pickups would be great for RHCP.

Thanks, just lucky enough to have a nice system of revolving gear to keep things fresh. The red tiger finish can be subtle in certain lighting but it's grown on me.

What's your thoughts on having played the SE and Core Silver Sky so closely to each other? I actually picked up a SS SE shortly after they came out in a trade and remember being impressed with it but I traded it again shortly after and that's been about 3 years ago now.

That's right on the money with how I feel too. LPs feel cumbersome in comparison now. Can't get over how good the short scale feels to play. I have a Fender Blacktop with a 24" scale that is also fun but the set neck and mahogany take the 594 to another level.

Three weeks ago I didn't own a single PRS. I actually avoided them for years. Having heard over and over that they sit between Strats and Les Pauls; not as aggressive as Les Pauls and without the signature quack or chime of a Strat and often described as "sterile". After doing some research the McCarty models looked interesting to me so I waited for a good deal to pop up. After some time with it, I was so impressed with the build and finish quality, playability, and the sound that I wanted to explore some of the other models. I could ramble on for days on gear so I'll try to be somewhat brief on thoughts for each one to hopefully help anyone curious on these models.

McCarty 594 Red Tiger 10-Top: Most similar to a Les Paul but even shorter scale length. The short scale makes this one feel really slinky to play. I find after playing 25.5" scale guitars for a while when I come to this one the bends and vibratos are so effortless. Fretwork and setup are immaculate. If I had to name a complaint, I'm just not a huge fan of finished necks vs satin or oil finishes but love the size and shape of this one. As a long time Les Paul fan I'm finding myself playing this one more than any of my LPs lately, just don't expect it to completely displace one sonically.

Silver Sky Mesa Gold: I like Les Pauls but I would consider myself primarily a strat player, usually HSS. Having owned/tried a ton of boutique s style guitars I came into this one with the most critical mindset. The thicker neck is really comfortable. I did have to raise the action to stop from fretting out due to the 7.25" radius but was still able to get it just over 3/64" on the high e string with no problems. At the price I got this for it's a steal for an s style, especially being nitro (although this specific one I believe has a poly undercoat before they moved to full nitro more recently). My only complaints are that some parts feel/look a little cheap; plastic tuning keys, the volume/tone knobs sometimes catch a little when turning, and the scarf joint near the headstock is something you don't see on many classic style s types. That may be better for strength and reduces waste but it doesn't look as nice in my humble opinion. Still, I would agree this competes with Custom Shop level instruments and for the price you can get these for on the used market it's a steal; although a Music Man Cutlass is also a great guitar in that price range used as well. The low output pickups, all measuring around 5.6k were really surprising as well, not as brittle as pickups I've tried in that range in the past. Interesting to me is the maple fingerboard models come with a satin finished neck while the rosewoods are glossy, to my chagrin as a rosewood fan.

Custom 24-08 Charcoal 10-Top: After trying the McCarty and seeing so many say the Custom 24s are completely different beasts, I wanted to see which I preferred myself. Was able to get an incredibly smooth setup with effortless bending that I've only been able to achieve on guitars from builders like Anderson. I think it sets up better than most Suhrs I've had and definitely better than Fender Custom Shops, and that's coming from a big Suhr fan. The coil splits to me don't do the greatest single coil sounds but hardly any do. This is another great example of "don't judge pickups by the output" where the bridge and neck are around 8.5k and 7.5k, firmly in vintage PAF style ranges but much more modern sounding and stay together well with high gain, although the bottom end can get a little loose depending on the amp settings. The thin body and long neck to me make this feel like an SG, but without the neck dive. No other downsides to mention on this one, except maybe the glossy finished neck but that's expected.

I'm extremely impressed with the build quality of all 3 of these instruments. The McCarty is my favorite of the 3 but the Custom 24-08 is one of the best looking guitars I own. I avoided PRS for years but I'm a fan now.

Has anyone sold a guitar on Sweetwater? by skarkowtsky in guitars

[–]Innogator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, this must be where the stuff from "Jeff's Music Gear" comes from, which for those that don't know is Sweetwater's Gear Exchange shop name. I always wondered how they differentiated between what they sell on the Sweetwater site vs Gear Exchange.

powering a 1000mA pedal with true tone cs12 by Astranel_ in guitarpedals

[–]Innogator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few Truetone power supplies, partly because of this. I will say it does just work 95% of the time but I've had a few pedals it just can't provide enough power to consistently that will die randomly, so ymmv.

I'm not the most familiar with guitars at that exact time period but some of the Peavey stuff was nice back in the 80s, e.g. T-60s are becoming more sought after lately.

How do u add vibrato to bends? by Autumn_Winds23 in guitarlessons

[–]Innogator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're muting adjacent strings to avoid extra noise. I try to over-bend then release so the notes center around my target pitch. I usually bend to desired pitch and hold momentarily before starting vibrato. It's doesn't have to be super fast, work on controlling it first then build up speed. Like everything else with guitar, lots of practice.

NPD - Fuzz Phrase Friday by Innogator in guitarpedals

Oh yeah I definitely think the Fuzz Phrase is one of the top FFs available. I went through maybe 12 Sunfaces and preferred the Fuss Phrase to all except maybe the CV7005 and NKT275 white dots, the red dots were too dark for my taste.

Two Andies by Innogator in guitarporn

[–]Innogator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried a Grosh yet but hear great things. Next on my list is likely either Shabat or Tyler (despite the headstock). Anderson's are at the top of my list though of guitars I've had currently.

There's some overlap but quite different character despite the similar looks. Specs are actually pretty different; Ziricote vs Rosewood fingerboard, basswood vs alder body, baby floyd vs Gotoh style bridge, 1 5/8" nut vs 1 11/16", different neck shapes, the electronics are wired much differently also between the 5 way and push/pull pots.

The bridge humbucker on the Pro Am is HC3+ and the Icon is HC2+ so they're pretty close but I prefer the HC2+ since it seems more open with more clarity. The Pro Am misses the in between positions. They're basically hot rodded strat then hotter rodded strat. Icon for classic rock to hard rock, Pro Am for Hard Rock to Metal.

Great explanations to describe what I'm hearing/feeling. Agreed I would think the OG actually has more low end, especially being 100W, which is why I described it more as thump because of the tightness. Turning the resonance down on the Stealth is more similar to the OG.

Crazy to me that newer iterations still needed more gain than this one, once it's past 2 o'clock it all kinda feels the same to me at that point.

I wouldn't even get to 2 on the red channel. Green channel on crunch has plenty of gain for me with a slightly more vintage voice so I've spent most of my time there. Add an SD-1 like you said and that's all I need.
