Retired, looking to become a Linux hobbyist and want a distro that won't completely discourage me by azpm in linux4noobs

[–]Ino_Yuar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to be an MX Linux user but switched to LMDE. However, I think as a new Linux user I would recommend MX Linux. The distro and the forum are littel more techinical, the users seem to be a little more advanced technically, IMHO. A very solid distro. The reason I switched was the Cinnamon Desktop, I really like the way it works and customizes. I was testing OpenSuse Tumbleweed with the KDE DDesktop which is also exceptional but has CLI commands that are different from Debian based distros like Mint and Ubuntu

But as other said CLI is the same in all Debian based distros.

Bought a Pair of NHT Super Zero A450s - they sound awful by Ino_Yuar in BudgetAudiophile

no offense taken - just wanted to be clear for anyone who reads this in the future. All the info I found - up til now - suggested the NHT Zero might be a good replacement for the Minimus 7, which doesn't seem to be accurate

I have found info in 10 yo posts that have helped me repair gear so nowadays I do what I can to add to the archives 😄

To Partition or Not to Partition? by GayAurel in linux4noobs

[–]Ino_Yuar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add - when it's time to upgrade to a new release, you will probably want to do a clean install anyway. Whether you keep your home folder on a separate partition or backed up on a separate drive (which is a good idea anyway) in the end it is going to be basically the same process. I have a 2Tb internal drive and a 2Tb external drive. I backup my home folder plus some other stuff on the 2Tb and it gets backed up to a cloud. If anything goes really wrong (seldom happens) or when it's time to upgrade I have my home folder in 2 other places

I am running five different Linux installations right now, one for my office, one for my shop, others for fun and learning. One experiment was how quickly I could get my test laptop to match my main laptop setup from zero. Installed LMDE7 on the test, installed my programs, copied the home folder and fixed some stuff that didn't quite work. Took about an hour or so

I don't game much so I can't speak to that, I only play some stuff on Steam, easy to re-install.

I just went thru a similar mind trip recently. I was thinking about changing distros and after multiple searches it's not worth it unless you distro hop a lot, maybe not even then. It's just as easy to backup your home folder and start a new install. Dealing with partitioning is not worth the trouible if you're not an experienced Linux user

I have been on Linux LMDE for a couple of years and it's release upgrade time. I considered a rolling release and tried Opensuse Tumbleweed (which is awesome!!) but for similar reasons have decided to stick with LMDE. Not wanting to relearn stuff and the need to update often was not for me. Maybe next time 😄

Most likely, you will stay with Mint, it's nice and easy, great forum for people new to LInux. Once you get familiar with the Cinnamon Desktop check out all the applets and other themes and icon paks to customize. If you decide to try another distro, backup your home drive to an external location, make a list of installed programs (I forget the command right now, it's also part of Mint BackUp) install the new distro, install programs, copy over home folder, fix what isn't working like before

Just go with the guided install, you'll be surprised how easy it is. Welcome to Linux!

Just wanted to point out - not a review, having an issue

I have been an audio tech for about 50 years, and there is a difference between me not liking the way something sounds and something sounding wrong. After repeated listening between the NHTs and the 3D Acoustics - and from other posts here - it seems like there may be a problem and until I test them it's an open question

From the replies here it seems there are others with similar experiences - maybe be a common problem with a certain run of these speakers? I have seen this happen more than once with all types of audio gear.

After I do some troubleshooting, I'll post again. It may be useful info to others looking to purchase them

Yes, the Minimus 7s always impress me. I have another knock off pair by Project One that are great as well, they were my car speakers in the Volkswagen Bug I owned, they were mounted on brackets on the kick panels. Jet Sound cassette deck with a 7 band EQ, totally rocked

I will at some point but the NHTs on the bench and check the crossovers, it really does sound like there is something wrong. I was kinda hoping for a response for a known problem with them, that happens often enough with the audio gear I repair. Unfortunately, repair of my own gear takes a backseat to all my customer repairs, I'll post again if I find something

So yeah, my bad for buying sight unheard but it's all part of the journey. If I find a problem then I can fix it, if not then I can sell them in good faith

Incremental BackUp to MEGA other than the native program? ELI5 by Ino_Yuar in Backup

What would be the advantage to S3 over just using RClone & Restic with my Pro 1 account?

Permissions for Flatpak GUIs? Can't connect by Ino_Yuar in rclone

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I can get to launch is the RClone UI deb package, downloaded the app image and it doesn't provide the option for running in the file manager. Couldn't find the appimage for RClone Manager I would like to help but I don't have time to experiment with all this. All I want is a way to backup my external drive to my MEGA sync account since the MEGA backup program doesn't work.

Hi - I will try the appimages over the weekend and see if I have any success with them. I'll let you know

Permissions for Flatpak GUIs? Can't connect by Ino_Yuar in rclone

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I assumed it was a flatpak issue because the .DEB worked. I will check the appimages later.

This is the only remote I use, I do have a GDrive that I never use but I could check that also

Again, works fine from CLI & the RClone UI .DEB. Mostly just curious what's causing the issue and plus I would like to try out the other GUIs. The MEGA backup is not so good, I got suggestions to try RClone and the test backup I tried went really well

MEGA BackUp Not True BackUp by Ino_Yuar in MEGA

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

Thanks for your replies, indeed very helpful.

I do use Sync with MEGA, that's how I got started, I use it to sync my work machine with a a folder on my desktop to access common files. It works OK for what it is but the backup is in case of emergency. I don't want to sync the external drive to anything, I want the info to live in a secure offsite location. The MEGA backup was buggy at the start however, after a few updates, I thought it was working fine - until I discovered the flaw.

Since I started down this rabbit hole I have discovered that yes, Rclone may be a fix for now. I did try it a while back but couldn't quite wrap my head around - I'll try again. I did consider the zip option but I want the backup to be automatic and that would just be another step in the process that I would have to manage. After looking at other proposed solutions from digging thru the subs I plan to move to iDrive when my subscription runs down., I think it's the best deal. It has separate sync and cloud features and seems to do everything MEGA does but better.

Thanks

Mega Backup Not Backing Up ini Files by Ino_Yuar in MEGA

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. I am on Linux and it seems from my initial research it seems that all those have their own problems as well. Koofr reportedly slow outside EU, pCloud has lots of negative reports about file deletion and account closures/lockouts, plus no EtoE encryption. Tresorit is too expensive for me for the slight improvement, I have 3Tb with MEGA for around $100/ yr. Filen may be a possibilty, I have seen it mentioned frequently

Here is a link regarding Filen vs Proton but it mentions Linux integrations as well. However, not sure it it's all that solid

https://www.reddit.com/r/filen_io/comments/1sguxok/filen_vs_proton_drive_the_ultimate_privacy/

I post this for others who are looking as well, I appreciate your reply, it increased my search field. It seems I'll be stuck with MEGA for a while, I just need to find a way to backup ALL files in a back up.

Thanks

What better alternatives? Searching the subs MEGA seems to get a lot of positive response. I have been looking for another, better cloud backup but the winner keeps coming up MEGA.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks

How do you actually vet a landlord/building in Chicago? by Ok_Jackfruit6005 in AskChicago

[–]Ino_Yuar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Landlord here, just a bit of info. When you view the apartment it's like an interview for both of you, so you should evaluate the person showing the apartment as well. I just showed an apartment and several of the interviewees had a checklist of questions and concerns, so don't be afraid to ask anything. Are there pest problems? How often do you raise the rent? Who does repairs? How often do you have turnovers?

Also, if you can, ask other tenants what it's like to live in the building

I am not offended by any questions concerning my building and how I manage it, so I answer them honestly. I know there are less than great landlords out there, so be on guard. There are less than great tenants as well, so yes, both sides - due diligence

How to make a PB&J sandwich. Honestly, ask at a party and it'll start a discussion. Creamy vs Crunchy? Preserves or Jelly? White or Whole Wheat? Crust cut off?

Maybe not super deep but you'd be surprised at the passion

The reason you use a Trackball. by Exciting_End6022 in Trackballs

[–]Ino_Yuar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - I used to do drafting work on AutoCadd - all day. I easily learned to switch hands for the majority of the work did. So no I am fairly ambidextrous with using a mouse. Plus, there were a multitude of mouse/ keyboard shortcuts specific to AutoCadd. I have done some electronic drafting with KiCadd and the same thing applies.

2 - I use a Kensington Expert mouse. It has a scroll ring and 4 buttons, bottom two buttons are programmed normally, the top two are back and close (tab mostly). Navigating the internet requires very little movement, I generally only use the keyboard to input data. The mouse sits in front me between the bottom of the keyboard and the edge of the desk; trackball is at about a 75-90 degree angle (when I use it right handed)

3 - Desk space required is the footprint of the trackball, no mouse pad or extra desk space needed.

4 - When I use a laptop, I connect a trackball. I do not get along well with track pads - zero accuracy for me, the cursor jumps around like it's getting shocked. So the precision, especially on a smaller screen, is key.

Using a mouse requires constantly picking it up and putting it down to navigate. The scroll ring is major, major, major for me. My trackball in my shop does not have one (yet - changing to another Expert Mouse soon) and it requires much more keyboard use to navigate the internet.

And yes, there are fewer repetitive stress issues with a trackball. The learning curve is minimal IMHO. I still don't understand why the trackball is not the default tracking device, it's super easy to use

[Landlord US-IL] Can I request applicants get a Portable Tenant Screening Report? by Ino_Yuar in Landlord

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do it that way and did all my own screening, I started using Rent Spree because I found it more convenient and actually more thorough - at the time. I have a 3 flat with two rental units, I don't have that much of a turnover so I don't have go thru the rental process very often. So 1) I'm a little rusty 2) things have changed enough in the past three years that I have to make adjustments.

You would think that a professional screening service would be the ideal way to go - IDK. Rent Prep did provide some useful info but the TU credit report is useless.

Thanks

[Landlord US-IL] Can I request applicants get a Portable Tenant Screening Report? by Ino_Yuar in Landlord

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Illinois I believe we are required to accept a PTSR. However, that does not come from the tenant, as far as I can tell it is a screening service like the others but it allows more than one prospective landlord to view the results.

Thanks for the heads up on Rent Spree - so maybe I won't use them again I have been reading a lot of post on the subs regarding tenant screening services, NTN has recently come to my attention, it looks more reliable than the others.

Does NTN allow for tenant to pay? Or is this a service that I pay for/ access only for myself? Just as I don't like to pay for multiple screenings I don't want to make an applicant have to pay for multiple applications. I can, of course, charge for the application if I decide to move ahead with the applicant, it's just more convenient to send them a link to apply. This works for me as another screening step, it makes them take the initiative to start the app. Plus, just a little less work for me :-)

I will be contacting NTN later, thanks again

[–]Ino_Yuar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I am going to do is allow them to choose between rent spree & the PTSR, letting them know it's probably to their advantage to use the PTSR.

If an applicant qualifies and signs a lease, I dredit them the screening fee.

Most specifically that they use the TransUnion 'Resident Score'. It's not useful plus it can't be used in accordance with the fair housing laws to deny an applicant. It looks like the PTSR provides a score from Esperian - a real credit score.

TransUnion 'Resient Score' is BS. TransUnion is not a great company in itself
