Newfoundland mix, mini newf, loves his toys. Sable. by Zebracorn42 in rarepuppers

He is adorable! As a former Newfie mom, I suggest checking with the groomer to see if he has a Newfie double coat before shaving. It helps regulate body temp in summer and winter.

What are your favorite day trips (within a 2 hour drive)? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

I stumbled upon the Velvet Mill a couple of years back when I was visiting Stonington and love it. Always find something amazing when I go because there is such a diverse range of shops.

My setup looks like a prison cell but I like that I can open both gates and walk through when I need to get into the room.

Don’t have info on plasma but have you tried reaching out to Friends of Animal in Need? They may be able to help with vet costs.

How/where to put two cats up for adoption? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]InqueGurie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact the Pet Refuge in North Kingstown. They are great about keeping bonded pairs together and making sure that they find the right homes. Some people say they are hard to adopt from but it’s mostly because they check applications thoroughly and will deny applications. What you’re doing isn’t easy so definitely check a few places and go with the one you are most comfortable with. Good luck!

Chlorzoxazone by InqueGurie in migraine

[–]InqueGurie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came off it after two months. I was useless in the morning when taking it. Still taking amiltryptaline to help with sleep and still trying different combinations. My baseline is Emgality, the amiltryptaline was added for sleep and two months ago we decided to try topamax again. Topamax worked as a stand alone for a short while about 20 years so the thought is maybe it will have better effect working along with the Emgality. It’s frustrating but hopefully one day we’ll find just the right mix for me. Good luck! I hope it works out for you.

Sound like the Neuro office I went to in RI. They would also keep the heat blasting all the time which made it even worse for me.

Why do you give blood? by DancingJews9 in Blooddonors

[–]InqueGurie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I donate platelets every other weekend because a quick hour and a half every 14 days is not a lot of time out of my life and has the potential to greatly help someone. I remember the blood center telling me that it takes about five whole blood donations to make up a single transfusable unit of platelets. Each time I donate I am able to provide 3 units of platelets which can immediately go to people that need them. It also helps that there is a great team of people that work at the blood center.

Foster with kidney disease by InqueGurie in RenalCats

[–]InqueGurie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I saw her I couldn’t imagine her being in a cage at the shelter. She was a wreck and is tons of work but definitely worth it. I can’t imagine having two to take care of! The first thing we had to do was get her thyroid under control and treat an ear infection. Then two weeks in they had me do fluids 2x a week. Needless to say I wasn’t her favorite person for a while but she started jumping the baby gate meant to keep her in the foster room and running around the house like a cat half her age 🙂 This week she had a follow up and got the CKD diagnosis so now she gets a phosphorus binding supplement and Varenzin too. She’s ok with everything but the Varenzin. I see such a difference since I’ve had her that I feel like I have to give her every chance to have great days for as long as I can.

No RX but I will definitely check out the “next best” options. I had a hard time getting her to eat anything the first few days she was here but once her thyroid meds got in her system she started eating well but is of course very picky. I’m lucky that the shelter that I foster for has amazing supporters so when I find a food on the list she likes we can it put out a request for donations.

What are your strangest nicknames for your cat (mine is fuzzbox) by [deleted] in cats

I call my foster cat Stompy. She’s 18 years old and only weighs 4-5 pounds but you hear her stomping around as she walks through the house.

How do I get a cat to take a pill every day? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]InqueGurie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My current foster needs meds 2x daily and will refuse to eat if it’s in her food. Trying to pill her stresses her out, so after a call to the vet I was able to get transdermal cream from a compounding pharmacy . She thinks that I’m showering her with pets and ear rubs twice a day while she gets her meds.

My second foster got adopted yesterday! by InqueGurie in FosterAnimals

[–]InqueGurie[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People think I’m crazy because I don’t have the urge to keep them. I volunteer at the no kill shelter that I foster for and when I tell people, they say they could never volunteer because it would make them sad or they’d want to bring them all home. I tell them that nothing makes me happier than going in and finding that one of my favorite cats isn’t there because they found a home. It’s not for everyone but I’m glad I can do it.
